Bedbugs whilst traveling Balkans

Hello everyone. This July me and some mates will be traveling to the Balkans
(Montenegro,Kosovo,Macedonia, and Bulgaria).
We are 9 people and we will be staying in cheap accommodations we found on booking.com.
Ive heard lots about bedbugs whilst traveling and how nasty they are, is this true? Are bedbugs a real worry to watch out for on our trip? If so how do we avoid them as much as possible?

Never heard of anyone having that problem while travelling through the Balkans.

I was in Zagreb last weekend and got bitten to pieces!

Huh, where? I'm from Zagreb and I've literally never heard of anyone having bedbugs in their apartment or hotel.

Avoid this place like the plague!

Honestly, this is where looking at reviews comes into a thing. Most reviews say that the place is old, not cleaned enough, and it only has some modifications to look nice and clean but isn't actually clean. This is why I usually look at reviews before going to these types of places. And it is pretty cheap (when compared to other places in Zagreb) so you can't really expect much.

When you click on reviews, it shows all good reviews. A bit misleading and in hindsight I don't think they're all legit. I have travelled all over the world in my 63 years, and this is the first time I have ever come across bed bugs.

Interesting, when I clicked on the reviews part most of the reviews had a bad review part too.

Ive never even realised that it's possible to get them here- I've never heard anyone ever mention anything about bedbugs in the Balkans.

The only time I’ve ever had problems with bedbugs was in the army. Literally every normal hotel, Airbnb, or just generally decent accommodation I’ve stayed in in the Balkans was completely fine.
Unless you’re staying in some ultra-cheap hostel with like 30 people in one room in the shittiest place in town, you’ll probably be okay. People online make it sound way more common than it actually is.

Oh phew, I was really worried

You do know bedbugs aren’t linked to location right? There was a bedbug epidemic in Paris I think some years ago. Obviously if the place looks dirty it’s going to be a higher chance of bedbugs or insects.
All accommodations I’ve stayed in Albania and Kosovo were clean and modern but I payed 50+ euros for a room . If you’re going to pay 10€ then maybe don’t expect much.

Let's use the correct names of countries at least

Bedbugs are carried around by travellers and do not have anything to do with cleanliness, rather with prompt intervention when a guest finds them. The busier the city/hotel is, the more likely to encounter some. It’s basically statistics.
I indeed found some in my hotel room in Sofia last summer, but that does not reflect in any ways on Sofia or even the given hotel, which handled things very professionally.

well try not to stay in the cheapest shitholes. its not balkans specific, its a global thing

Honestly, I've never seen bedbugs to be a worry. Unless you are staying at a pretty poor hotel of some sort where it is unmaintained. As long as you go to trustworthy places (which there most likely will be) I don't really see a problem.

Be more carefull about bedcocks and bedgoblins. 🤣
bangobangohehehe@reddit
They're as much of a concern as they would be anywhere. Don't stay in the dingiest of places and you'll be fine. I've only ever been to one place that had them and you'll have to really go out of your way to find that shithole.
