The entire “Singles” movie soundtrack is amazing

The first time I saw Screaming Trees, they were still a local band in Ellensburg, Washington. I was going to college there. Saw them twice during that time, actually.
Fmdjvoice@reddit
Same here. I believe it was the 88-89 school year that I saw them while they were playing at a high school dance at Eisenhower H.S. in Yakima

Great song, and reminds me of the movie Singles.

One of the greatest soundtracks of all time

I was at the car dealership getting routine maintenance done, and this broke through the parade of '70s classic rock song that had made me think that was the channel that was playing. It made me realize just how lazy or "laid-back" a lot of the famously "heavy" songs from back then sounded, whereas this was a lot more in your face somehow. (The same went, to a somewhat lesser degree, for the three Stone Temple Pilots singles that were scattered in there as well.)

I love this band!
Screaming Trees taught me that “grunge” was more than punk + distortion. There was some psychedelic DNA in some of the bands and no one did it better than these guys to my tastes. The band build the perfect sound around Mark’s voice.

The Screaming Trees, especially in their early years, would have fit in seamlessly with the 1980s Paisley Underground scene.
Like some of the Paisley Underground bands, as well as some 1980s English and Australian bands who were similarly indebted to 1960s psychedelia, the Screaming Trees were included on the Children of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era, 1976–1995 compilation (with the Trees’ 1987 song “Transfiguration”). That compilation was itself a nod to the original Nuggets compilation of 1960s psychedelia, psychedelic-influenced pop rock, and garage rock that came out in the early 1970s.

I was just listening to Third Rail Power Trip by Rain Parade, and stopped reading the comment you're responding to when I got to the mention of "psychedelic."
"Yep, like Rain Parade," I thought, and then cheered when you read my mind.

Love me some Lanegan. 🖤 I also love his work with Queens of the Stone Age and his own work. Brilliant musician with a voice like a warm, old leather jacket. Gone too soon!!!
FormerCollegeDJ@reddit
Greg Dulli representing the Gutter Twins would like a word with you.
this_kitty68@reddit
Of course. Sorry. My bad.
Hagbard_Shaftoe@reddit
And Isobel Campbell, and the Soul Savers and Alain Johannes and so many others. It was awesome seeing so many talented people seek him out.
One of my favorite collaborations was with Neko Case, even though it was only a couple of songs - I wish they had done more together. They seemed like kindred spirits.
this_kitty68@reddit
Alain Johannes is one of the most talented musicians on earth. Underrated and unacknowledged like Lanegan. Case is a genius, as well.
Hagbard_Shaftoe@reddit
Absolutely. I love Eleven. And Them Crooked Vultures. And some of his solo stuff.
If you haven’t watched it, you should check out the new Red Hot Chili Peppers/Hillel Slovak documentary on Netflix. Alain is interviewed (when they’re talking about the What is This? days), and it also includes a ton of footage of him when he was a teenager.
this_kitty68@reddit
Thanks! Will do!
Hagbard_Shaftoe@reddit
Mark Lanegan is/was probably my favorite artist - his solo stuff was so varied and so incredible. I hope the culture at large "discovers" his discography at some point - he deserved a wider audience when he was alive.
this_kitty68@reddit
There’s so much more to him than this song, which is probably my least favorite.
sullen_agreement@reddit
i saw them live! they were awesome.
they opened for the Spin Doctors. We left like three songs into the spin doctors because they sucked so bad.
pixelneer@reddit
Saw Screaming Trees at a festival in Charleston SC when I was there in the Navy.
The lineup:
STILL remember that show... well.. the acts that blew me away. 😄 Getting old sucks.
teamgreenzx9r@reddit
I was a huge Matthew Sweet fan! I would have loved this show.
Kodiak01@reddit
Saw them once as well back on an MTV tour at the old Riverside Park Speedway (now Six Flags New England and the Speedway is long gone). They headlined a show with Soul Asylum and Spin Doctors.
raind0gg@reddit
We actually lost Mark Lanegan. If you haven’t, check him out. Legend.
moneyman74@reddit
Mark Lanegan passed away, but there is an interesting book about his downfall into drugs and addiction called 'Sing Backwards and Weep'
Hagbard_Shaftoe@reddit
Interesting is one way to put it! Devastating is another. I loved it, but I felt like I needed a mental cleanse after being in that headspace while reading it.
ItsRainingFrogsAmen@reddit
I read it right after reading Patty Schemel's and Roddy Bottum's memoirs. It was interesting doing it thst way because the same people and places kept showing up, but, oof, I needed some fluffy entertainment after that.
ProTA808@reddit
FWIW Mark does the audiobook.
FormerCollegeDJ@reddit
The book Lanegan by Greg Prato is a good companion piece to Lanegan’s autobiography, featuring a series of series of interviews with various musicians and others involved in the music industry who worked with Mark Lanegan.
thyme2kill@reddit
I love that song. It got me though some hard times.
Wallis614@reddit
Saw them in ‘92 in NYC w/Babes In Toyland & Therapy.
_the_credible_hulk_@reddit
They were my first concert, opening for Soul Asylum and The Spin Doctors.
Kodiak01@reddit
Riverside Park?

Flowing locks? Check. Abandoned decay? Check. Fire for no reason? Check. Overexposed film effect? Check. Wobbly hand cam work? Check check check. Def 90s
Spiff69@reddit
The drums and the lead guitar on this song are chef's kiss and then the vocals! So much awesomeness!!!
FormerCollegeDJ@reddit
The music video was filmed at the Ellensburg Rodeo Grounds in Mark Lanegan’s and both Conner brothers’ (Gary Lee and Van) hometown, though I believe none of them were still living in Ellensburg at the time.
MaximumJones@reddit
They should have been much bigger than they were.

Banger!

the Screaming Trees kicked so much ass! and Mark Langegan solo stuff is even better. Truly under-appreciated.
