What are the best news outlets (I.e. Guardian, BBC etc) and formats (i.e. text, audio, apps etc.) you use?

Used to just watch BBC news. But they seem to have skewed to the right so I don’t bother much. I open the Guardian app now and again and skip the headlines and just look at cultural stuff.

Hmmm - makes sense. So no political news anymore? haha

No. Nothing will change. I have enough to do managing my family and work. Don’t need the additional stress.

I try not to pay attention as they're all talking rubbish most of the time.

I turned my notifications off for the BBC News and Sky News app on my phone and it’s the best thing I’ve done in a while for my mental health. It’s refreshingly freeing not knowing what’s going on in the world and just living in the moment. Of course I still check the BBC website every day, but not having a barrage of constant news notifications pinging to my phone every hour is much better for my head.

Read as much as you can, as widely as you can - that’s the only advice I think. BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, Times, AP, Reuters (latter two are obvs less UK based) Dip your toe in tabloids too and have a look. It will give you an idea of what other people are thinking about if you want a broader opinion.

Legitimate-Leg-4720@reddit

Would love to read from different sources like that (FT and Economist in particular) but it'd be very pricey to have subscriptions to all of those. Even FT / Economist alone are very expensive for someone who doesn't make alot of money
View on Reddit #86394378

PatientArugula7504@reddit

Btw Bloomberg do a host of podcasts including a European version. I think that is the best Euro-centric one I am still after a 7-min distillation of UK-specific news tho - haven’t found it yet
View on Reddit #86395352

PatientArugula7504@reddit

I don’t make any money either and I don’t subscribe! I listen to the podcasts and just see the headlines

wow okay - Quite a lot of work then no?!
View on Reddit #86393510

PatientArugula7504@reddit

I don’t pay to subscribe to them but I see their headlines as a notification because I have the apps I see different headlines come in and it delivers a top- level, succinct idea of what is happening, coloured by bias. By seeing all the different biases, I can get a broad idea of what is going on

Generally watch the BBC News at Ten most evenings on TV, or certainly the first five minutes anyway.

On your TV?
View on Reddit #86393042

True-Abalone-3380@reddit

Yes, on my TV. I find it's the best way of watching it, far more relaxing, better quality, and comfortable than using a phone or a computer.
View on Reddit #86393521

blueroses8000@reddit

Yeah we have it on every evening as we’re sat there relaxing anyway. We might not watch focused on it acting like it’s our only way to get news like the old days but it’s actually nice, especially sat with other family members you can watch and discuss things with.

FT. BBC is ok but filled with a lot of junk that isn’t important.

Ground News, stopped watching mainstream news a while ago due to the clear bias in favour of the right across almost every single outlet.
View on Reddit #86392659

Economy_Primary1774@reddit (OP)

What is Ground News?
View on Reddit #86393051

justanothergin@reddit

It's a news aggregator platform that helps identify media bias. It doesn't publish it's own articles but rather organises news stories from multiple outlets and displays how different outlets cover the same events. It's honestly quite eye opening.

It’s impossible to entirely avoid the news. I get it vicariously via social media, work colleagues etc. If there is a story/event which piques my interest, I’ll read up on it further. Otherwise, the news app on my phone barely gets touched.

Check BBC website and if, rarely, I watch the news I actually like BBC news. I see people on the left slamming it for being too right wing and people on the right slamming it for being too left wing. Probably means they are doing something right to try and be balanced. Never heard someone say that GBnews is too left wing for example 😅

I follow specific news sources on Instagram so I don't get warped headlines designed for clicks, casual racism, antisemitism or general bullshit that the Daily Mail or The Sun spews out. I choose to see news tailored to me.
View on Reddit #86393838

Left_Potential5901@reddit

I consume news via Ground News which gives you a consolidated view of all the news sources that are running a particular story. You can easily see which news outlets are biased towards which end. Unfortunately, pretty much all news outlets including BBC, Guardian etc have an agenda they push. I especially hate news outlets that push a certain foreign government's agenda in the western countries over local issues.

I actually get a lot of my news through current affairs satire shows like The News Quiz on R4. They often do a good job of explaining the relevance and exposing bias

Use an app called Acta Daily, gives you daily news audio briefings for all topics you want to track. Been using it for a few weeks, really good! Apart from that, the Guardian and BBC mainly, but I feel like they are often reporting on so many things I really don't care about...

Found it on the app store - been searching for something like this as well. I think it's British as well, they have a lot of stuff on british news I feel. But unsure.

For day-to-day reporting, I mainly read the Guardian and BBC News. I also look at the homepage of the Times for the headlines, to see if it's reporting anything my other sources are overlooking - if there's a story I see there that looks important that I've not seen on the Guardian or BBC I'll do a bit of online searching to find out more. I then go to a few Substacks and podcasts to get more detailed analysis, generally either centerist or left-leaning but with a smattering that are a bit more economically to the right.
