How early is too early to get to work?

I've generally had an 8-5 career since graduating college in '94. Yet, here I sit in the parking lot at 6:45 am. No one else will get here till 7:30. I used to barely get to work on time when I was raising my kids but now I have so much extra time that I just come to the office. I don't know what else to do with my mornings.
I can't help but get up early and lately, it's been 445 and I'm wide awake. I try to lay in bed till 530 but still, I'm ready to go by 630. This has all kind of crept up on me over the past 5 years and it's getting earlier and earlier. I go to bed by 9ish if that helps any.
How early is everyone else getting to the office?
Cutaway2AZ@reddit
I mean the key is that you don’t know what else to do with your mornings. About fifteen years ago I lived in PA and wanted to move to NYC. I decided that I needed to get a job there first which I did. Then I had a 90 minute commute (when everything went like clockwork, which I suppose it did more than half the time).
Anyway eventually I decided where I wanted to live, found an apartment, moved, then very soon my contract was terminated anyway but I found another position. Bottom line my commute went from 90 minutes minimum to five minutes walk maximum. Suddenly I had an extra 4 hours a day.
Now I live in semi-rural arizona and work eastern hours. I have zero commute and finish at 2pm. It’s like having another day.
Back then I explored the city. I walked for miles and miles. I took up square dancing, and sewing, and later planned complicated vacations hiking in south america. As work became more serious it took up more time, and eventually I just got fed up of the whole thing and left. Now, i just work in my yard every afternoon in winter. In summer i go in my garage and play in my workshop, or cook.
Sometimes I was happy and sometimes I had money, sometimes it all seemed kinda pointless and shitty but I was usually pretty good at finding ways to arrange my day around my obligations and find things to do. Right now I’m laying on my bed doomscrolling and feeling like crap because I have a cold and seem unable to sleep. I’m hoping I feel better before the weekend because for some reason I decided I wanted to learn how to build a patio and it’s kinda half done and rain is forecast at the weekend. Meh. My life is a mess of half-finished projects.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I hope you feel better soon!

bring your sneakers and do some walking?

Honestly, I don't know why I hadn't thought of this!

That is perfect if you get a cheap membership to a gym like planet fitness. Go spend half hour on an elliptical, 15 mins of stretching and self weight exercise, and 15 mins on the hydro massage table. 20 or 25 bucks a month and thier showers are very nice and clean.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Embarrassingly enough, I have a membership. It's $10 a month and I had completely forgotten about it.
Meepoclock@reddit
Can you leave early?
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I did today!
Meepoclock@reddit
That’s great! Can you change your schedule so that you start and leave earlier? My mom used to do that. I also have a colleague who logs in early and is done around 2pm (we’re remote).
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
As soon as this month is over, I'm going to ask about flexing my hours to leave early.
EducationalRule1425@reddit
Will they let you change your hours? One of my office jobs let you pick a shift: 6-3, 7-4, or 8-5. Probably doesn't work for all companies, but it was nice to get to choose!
Kind_Instance_8205@reddit
Start commuting to the office by bike. It will give you healthy exercise and, depending on the kind of ride, if could help with your miss throughout the day.
Talking_Head@reddit
My job starts at 3:00 PM. I arrive at 2:57 sharp. No unpaid time from me.
josephowens42@reddit
This is the way!

I have anxiety issues and have learned that getting to work, or anywhere I have to be for that matter, thirty or so minutes early helps to ease the anxiety I feel.
Glad_Nobody6992@reddit
I typically get to the office between 5.30 and 6:00 most mornings. Today it was 5:40, left work at 5:00.
NatalieBostonRE@reddit
wow 😮
StormProfessional950@reddit
Shit man, find something else to do with your life other than work.
Get a hobby or something else to fill your time. Then you won't rush to work because you have nowhere else to be.
ProperBar4339@reddit
That’s all too early to get to work. If you’re up before you need to be - go for a walk, have a second cup of coffee and listen to a podcast, hit the gym, water your garden.
kipy7@reddit
I've noticed myself getting up earlier starting in my late 40s. I've always had day shifts at hospitals, they generally start at 7 or 730am, so I've always gotten up at 6am-ish but it's only been now that I don't mind. I try to get by bed by 930pm.
Emotional-Clerk8028@reddit
I'll get to my job anywhere from 45-65 minutes early. Traffic is lighter, I have the whole place to myself for at least 30 minutes, and in 26 years I've been late only twice, due to major accidents.
LetsBNiceYall@reddit
I have never ever ever had this problem, though I respect the early riser! Also I workout after work so I sleep like the 🪦
ep3dmik@reddit
I'm learning that the minutes I've wasted here and there, are years over a lifetime. One could say, get a hobby... and sound sarcastic. But it's true.
You're not living your life. Get to work on time. Leave on time. The rest is yours. YOLO
Square-Wave5308@reddit
I'm not a morning person, but for years worked in factories. Assembly operations typically start early. I got in the habit of arriving early, and enjoyed that at least I was getting paid for a part of the day I otherwise wasted. I had no issue taking the occasional long lunch or early departure.
Cisru711@reddit
Stay up till midnight and see what happens. Or at least 11.
DoeBoy71@reddit
I work from home, unless I absolutely have to do something in the office which is 1.5 miles from my house.
No alarms. I get up 4:30am every day, and log in and start working, which means I'm usually logging out around 2pm.
I'm in California but the rest of my workers are in Central and East Coast, with a sprinkle in Poland and India, so it works out. They all call me crazy for starting so early but it's when I get the majority of my (intended) work done before I start getting side tracked by people asking for help.
SoCalSuburbia@reddit
WFH. But I get up anywhere between 2:30-4:30 am. I work with a global team and may be in meetings as early as 4:00 am. Good news is that I’m usually done before 2:00 pm.
tpauly0225@reddit
I start at 8am. Arrive at 7:58am.

Worst part is the traffic and having to leave early.
Leave at 6:10 and barely make it on time.
Leave at 6 and I’m there super early.
ThreadParticipant@reddit
I’m in the office at my desk at 6.45am and at my desk when I wfh around the same time… I knock off at 4pm.
Jenshark86@reddit
The only problem with that is the managers watching you leave at 4pm when they are there until 6
No_Subject_343@reddit
They can kiss my ass.
Jenshark86@reddit
Good luck on that when you are filing for unemployment
GridDown55@reddit
Go for a run or a walk
Mindless-Store3581@reddit
Go to the gym and move with purpose. Stretch, a lot. I've been working out before work since 2001and it's a good way to start the day. I still get to work around 7:30. Helps you beat the traffic as well.
EzAeMy@reddit
I start at 7:30 AM. We have 10-15 minutes no problem grace. I often walk in at 7:35. No way am I showing up at 6:45. I can’t wrap my head around that.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I know I'm not impressing anyone. I am the management there. VPs are all at corporate.

Good lord, stop going to bed at 9 for starters.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I can't help it. I try to watch TV, do chores, etc. But I find it hard staying up beyond 10 at the latest.
eclectic-up-north@reddit
Yeah no,
When ypu reach an age, your bidy clock starts to shift.
Normal_Snow3293@reddit
I’m 60. Bedtime is usually 2 AM (in bed earlier but asleep by 2). I work from home so usually up by 9, start work at 10. Work until about 4, then another couple hours of mindless email sorting/filing etc from about 8 pm-10 pm. Obviously not the schedule for everybody, but it works for my wife and myself.
LouSevens@reddit
Do you have any hobbies you could do before work? There is no prize for showing up at 6:45am. I would sleep later
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Not really, kinda the reason I posted. Going from raising 7 kids to none leaves me with a lot of free time.
SizzlingSnowball@reddit
It's because we're old now and can't sleep for shit.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Exactly.
peachesandsir@reddit
“Sleep later” is sooooo much easier said than done, unfortunately
Jack_Scrambles@reddit
Dang guys. I don’t even have a job (don’t want one) and there’s not enough time in the day to do all of the projects, family stuff, and hobbies I have lined up.
gustogus@reddit
Now that my kids older I do the same thing, except now I go to the gym. Early morning gym is great.
squatting-Dogg@reddit
I did the same for 30 years then I started to go the gym from 5-6 AM. Treadmill for 50 minutes is a nice way to start your day.
PollutionZero@reddit
Bruh, woke up too early for work? Don't go in early, that's your time.
Here's a list of things I'd do instead:
Basically, ANYTHING is better than going to work that early.
If I get on at 7, I'm damned well getting off by 5 (I work a 9/80 schedule and get e/o Friday off).
That's you time, use it for YOU.

EzAeMy@reddit
Nicely done.
kat2211@reddit
It sounds like you're pretty wide awake in the mornings (I'm the same way). Is there something you like to do - reading, writing, working out, whatever, that you can do with that quality time? Seems a shame to waste it on work.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I agree. I'm so burnt out from being there. My office has no windows and it's so depressing to not see sunlight except when I take a walk around the building or go to lunch.
EzAeMy@reddit
This is what I’m thinking!
97_gEEk@reddit
Salaried professional here. No official start time; just get the work done and report at least 80/pay period.
I start every morning at the gym and roll in to work between 8:30-9:00. No one gives a shit.
SirMellencamp@reddit
Yeah my job is like that. I get in between 8 and 8:30. Come and go as I need to but I’m usually not getting out of the office till 6:30 and go in some weekends because I like the quiet and can work
CJK_Murph@reddit
That’s REALLY early. I think thirty minutes early is probably fine, any earlier is kinda weird.
Can you have a sunrise cuppa on your front porch or read a book, or join an early morning walkers group? Or START an early morning walkers group?
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I need to get back into reading. The last couple of books I read were so bad though (typical romance). I need something that has depth.
EveryFamilyhasCrazy@reddit
Contractually I must be there by 7:30 (I am a teacher). I arrive anywhere from 6:30 to 7:00 am, and I only have one coworker who occasionally beats me.
I have a 30 minute commute, with most of my coworkers having a 15 minute or less commute.
I spent over 20 years carpooling to work, and I have never been late, including the winter we hit black ice and wound up in the ditch. Carpool buddy drove, I pushed, and we made it to work on time. If I might be late (or close to it) I will have a panic attack
. Do not recommend!
GeoHog713@reddit
I used to get in by 6 to beat traffic. Sometimes earlier than that.
6-4, or 5-3 still gives you the afternoon to do things
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I left at 4 today. If I could do that every day, it'd be worth it.
MasterWinstonWolf@reddit
Nah...that ain't me... I have mornings, always have trouble getting to sleep. Most of my coworkers get in between 6:30-8 and they leave by 3:00-4:30...I start my day at 8:30 and leave at 5pm. 🤷♂️
Substantial-Chip-102@reddit
I now do the same. I am 60 and in good health and plan on working at least 5 to 7 more years. I haven’t used an alarm for a couple of years and I haven’t never been late. Used to always be late for work and sleep until noon at least on weekends. Definitely an age thing. Cheers!
AdSufficient2471@reddit
I wish I could be wide awake at 445 am. I’d get so much done and hit the gym before work!
mtcrick@reddit
I was raised by a Marine, so am chronically, obsessively early, always have been.
But it's gotten worse as I've gotten older. My kids make fun of me and talk about how I ruined them for just being on time, they get everywhere 20 minutes early.
I second the recommendation to bring a book along. Or get in a workout before you head to the office.
Tekon421@reddit
I only laugh at this because my brother in law is a Marine that is chronically late to everything. Like sometimes hours late.
mtcrick@reddit
My dad was a "if you're on time, you're late. If you're 10 minutes early you're on time".
desertratlovescats@reddit
I feel like if I’m on time, I’m late. I try to get everywhere 15-20 minutes early, but that might be the result of living in urban sprawl, where everything is about 45 minutes away.
Novagrl05@reddit
I get to the office by 0630. And I’m not the first one in.
Low-Class_Lucky@reddit
If I don't get to work by 0645, I don't get a decent parking spot. So I just changed my tour to 0700 - 1530.
It's cool to get off work earlier in the day and still have 4 hours of daylight to do whatever you want
DanCasper@reddit
I get up around 6 and walk the dog, have breakfast while catching up on YouTube then get to work at 9:30. Don't leave work till 6ish at night.
Leaving work early just means sitting in peak hour traffic so I get lobbed with house chores. Mornings are my free time.
specialpb@reddit
I work 4 10’s so in order to not be at work late, and try to beat afternoon traffic I get to work around 6am, leave at 4pm.
specialpb@reddit
Well as former military if you are early you’re on time, if you’re on time, you’re late, and if you’re are late, you’re really late.
Onerustyrn@reddit
If you get there 10 minutes to the time you’re scheduled, you’re already late.
R-Voodoo@reddit
Same actually. Work starts at 0730, I'm there be 0645.
mialunavita@reddit
I work at home and sleep til 8, start work at 9. I’ve been a second shifter trapped in a first shift world since I too graduated from college in ‘94. I’m soooo glad I have this schedule now. I sleep 12-8, work 9-5:30.
bollygirl69@reddit
I currently teach and get to work around 6:15. On average, I work 9-10 hours a day. Except Friday - I leave at 2:30 on Friday.
When I worked in IT, I got to work no later than 6:00 and left at 3:00. I’d rather start early and get home earlier.
CTurtleLvr@reddit
Almost exactly me. I don't have to be at school till 6:45, but am usually there by 6:15. I also usually stay later most days except Fridays, out by 2:30 for me, too!
OP, if I had that much time in the mornings, I would work out, or take a walk, walk the dog, just something active. It sucks to have to work out at 4:15am!
RushRealistic4816@reddit
The older I get the more I sleep. Work from home at 8. Wake up at 7:45.

6 is fine, before that starts to be weird IMO
No_Subject_343@reddit
Up at 5 am to get to work by 6:30. I hate it but it’s the only way I can have some sort of life after work.
vividtangerinedream@reddit
If you have that much extra time in the morning, go to the gym or run or walk. It would help you to spend some of that energy and it does your body good. If I didn't have to be there until 8, I would roll up about 7:45.
TheRealScutFarkus@reddit
Once I turned 50 (and stopped drinking), I was falling asleep earlier and earlier, and waking up earlier. At this point 6 years later, I'm asleep by 9pm and up everyday at 5am. I work from home though so I can start at 6am and be done by 3 or 4.
gambitgrl@reddit
I work from home so I get up like 20 minutes before I have to walk down the hall
TripMaster478@reddit
Nope. I still hit snooze until the last possible moment.
bizzylearning@reddit
I work remotely - log in at six my time b/c most of my team is two hours ahead, so that works well for us all. Every morning I log in with the hope of logging off by two or three - but usually it's closer to four. I'm working on fixing that about myself.
But if it made more sense to go to work later, I'd totally take my mornings to go rucking/hiking, work out at the gym, and do something to combat my sedentary lifestyle.
Any_Condition_2365@reddit
If you have nothing else to do, may as well take advantage of the quiet and get work done!
electromouse1@reddit
If my body had its way, id be going to bed at 6am and waking up at 2pm. I am a night owl forced into a day owl world.
JulesSherlock@reddit
Sounds like it’s time to exercise before work. Or read a book, write a journal, clean your house, get a pet, etc.
Husker5000@reddit
Other than my home office, my car is my office. Sales. I always start early, up at 4am for a workout and on my first drive to account uno by 6am. Days I don’t workout my first account might see me at 5am. This is all good because I can accomplish way more without the bosses hounding me and they don’t get into work until 8am and sometimes 9am. Any earlier would be too early and I wouldn’t see the decision makers. Depends on your work and when you can be at your best!
cholaw@reddit
I'm a super early person because I can't show up for work and hit the ground running. I have to ease into my day
Strong_Debate_8108@reddit
Same. Always went to the ER a half hour early to drink coffee and check emails. It was really for me.
QueenBBs@reddit
Depends. Are you hourly or salaried? If you’re not getting paid to be at work why not find something else to do? Workout in the am since your up, read a book, etc.
kevbayer@reddit
Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable.
For me, about 15 minutes early is my go to. Unless I have a long commute where the traffic can be unpredictable, then I'll build in extra time to account for that which may mean I'm arriving way early. I'll just hang out in my car for awhile in that case, or go somewhere close to work like a grocery store or something.
NerdyComfort-78@reddit
I worked 6:45 am till 4 or 5 (pre child). After I had my kid it was 6:30-3:00 (school hours). I was a HS teacher for 27 years and the going joke was I lived at the school because I was always there.
Looking for my next job and it chafes me that if I get an hourly job (non-exempt), I can’t work as long of a day as I want. Looking for Exempt jobs….

Years ago I lost a lot of weight (from 250lb to like 180 in 6 months), and at that point my sleep apnea disappeared and I got significantly better sleep, and thus I was up and ready to roll at 6am, which had never happened before.
This, combined with the fact that I ran out of stuff to do to keep me up late (they sunsettled my favorite MMORPG, they'll took my favorite late night TV show off the air, etc), meant i started going to bed ar like 8pm, which was super for me before. But that's my basic sleep cycle now.

My report time is 8 and I’m there at 6:30 (when the alarm is shut off). There are typically three of us. The rest arrive much closer to 8/815 (including leadership). It all depends if you are punching a clock(hourly) vs a salaried position. The last hourly job I had people would get in 15-20 early to sit around talk and have coffee. Now I work from home so I usually login 5 minuets late when I don’t have an early meeting. When I was going into my office I always wanted early so I could get some work done early before distractions started and leave before the day is gone.

Stephen King wrote a book about insomnia. My guess is it was written from his own personal experience as he aged. He describes how it doesn’t necessarily hit at night, that waking up early is a form of insomnia.
For me, menopause robbed me of less than 4 hours for a couple years before I went on medication. I decided sleep was more important than future brain damage from antidepressants. Since I have a caffeine sensitivity, I also take a sleep aid. I’ll take them both til I die but it is what it is.

I don’t have to clock in until 3am (warehouse job and there’s plenty of people working as the main shift starts at 1am) but I find myself heading out the door at 2:10am for a 10 minute drive. Lately, I’ve been forcing myself to journal for 10 minutes or swing by a convenience store for a soda to burn some time.

I didn't have that schedule until I was almost 30. When I did get to work "regular hours" is been a struggle.
If you are paid and can leave early, you are all good. If not, bring a book. That's what I did when my commute to work could be 1 hour or 3 hours, depending on traffic (DC traffic is horrible, even when you are driving to work when everyone is driving from work).

I'm so glad I am in an industry that respects 9 to 5 (including a lunch break) rather than squeezing an extra hour out of us. Dolly sang about 9 to 5 not 8 to 5!
ginger_kitty97@reddit
8 to 5 usually means an unpaid lunch hour.
SSolomonGrundy@reddit
8 to 5 is 9 hours. 9 to 5 is 8 hours.
Dolly sang about being at work 8 hours, 9 to 5, which used to be the norm in many areas and industries thanks to unions. Many unions successfully fought for paid breaks, including lunch and other short breaks. That very reasonable arrangement (which helps with productivity and happiness) was reversed in some but not all places post-Reagan.
ginger_kitty97@reddit
I am aware. I work 8 to 5 with 2 paid 15 min breaks and a one hour unpaid lunch break, for a total of 8 paid hours daily. It was the best my toothless union could negotiate, but at least we still have a pension option.
SSolomonGrundy@reddit
Ah that sucks. I mean Dolly could barely tolerate 9 to 5 with paid breaks, and neither can I!
The reality is that I wish we worked 9 to 5 with paid breaks, 4 days a week, at the same annual compensation. That feels most fair to me, and I think I'd be a better worker. But with AI, there's downward pressure on our wages since most employers will be trying to replace humans with AI as much as possible, and paying humans less when they can't eliminate us.
But I'm jealous of your pension. That's what makes that worth it I bet.
Dantheman11117@reddit
I thought that meant 9 hours / day, 5 days / week.
SSolomonGrundy@reddit
Nope, 9 am to 5 pm, which is how it has always been in my life thank god. That's how it should always be for everyone!
In the 1990s with the collapse of a lot of unions (thanks Reagan), some industries started getting really exploitative and stole an extra hour of work from workers.
raddishes_united@reddit
9am to 5pm is the meaning, keeping with the 8 hours for work/ 8 for rest/ 8 for “leisure” that was started with unions (I believe. I’m sure there are historians that can correct it here)

You could start a morning walk routine or maybe go to the gym. My mornings are all over the place, sometimes I have a 4am call (work from home those days), days I do go to the office, it is between 7:30 and 8:30 (depends on if there is an 8am meeting). Some days I’m lucky to be in by 9am but then I may have a work call at 9pm. I have a global project at the moment with manufacturing in Europe and Far East so trying to have a call with all 3 areas means that I am for 3am.

What are you doing when you get there, are you working for free?? If so, stop it!! If, on the other hand, you get to leave early if you start early, then by all means, keep it up- go home and enjoy your evening!
If you have to stay until “quitting time” no matter what, then do not go into work early. Do some chores, or workout, or do any activity you like- but don’t put in extra hours working for someone else!
roanokephotog@reddit
I have an 18 minute commute, I leave 30 minutes before I have to be at work. That way with my schedule that's never the same 2 weeks in a row (but compensated well, don't worry) I typically have enough of a buffer for weird traffic. You can minimize your costs to make dollars stretch further, you can get a better paying job so that you have more money but you CAN'T make TIME. That's a precious commodity.

Go as early as the employer will let you, if they will also let you leave early.
Treat this more like retirement lite. Youre getting and out before the rush, and ending up with a nice chunk of the later day to be at home with family and hobbies.
If that doesnt work, then i would suggest an early morning hobby. Exercise of some kind. Maybe a swim? Maybe just some reading time or a long walk. Etc. More complicated hobies too if your brain is fully on that early.
Distinct_Disk_1610@reddit

Good Lord, why are you getting to work so freaking early?? My job starts at 8:30 and if I'm lucky I get there at 8:30.
Superlucky_4@reddit
I get to my job 30 min early because I work in surgery which means I have to change into scrubs. Waiting to come in at the scheduled time with everyone else means listening to all the hens in the hen house chatter. I like that little bit of quiet time and a cup of coffee before the day begins.
too_hi_today@reddit
I work from home and barely make it on time!
Happy_Confection90@reddit
Ha, me too. I'm salaried and my "typical" work hours are 8-4:30, but given there's no clock to punch, it's often more like 8:10-4:40 because the commute to the other end of the house is slow.
When I drove to the office, I probably would have rather died than gotten there as early as the OP. If I woke up early, I always found something to do around the house before leaving at the normal time that got me there with 5 minutes to spare.
Head-Change-7681@reddit
I start work at 5:30am not because I have to but because I hate the traffic in the morning.
gcawad@reddit
I usually do laundry 2X for clothes and then add the sheets/towels another day, I can always get a load washed and dried by 8:00 but I don't get up until 6:00. Also can get an early walk, or just waste some time on my laptop. Also good time for a 30 minutes bike ride.

We have to punch in and out (hospital). No one is actually watching but at the same time the system will flag it if you clock in late.

I'm retired, but when I worked, I was almost always the first one there. Leaving early cut my morning commute in half and I had an hour of uninterrupted time. I got a lot done in that hour, and it really helped ease the stress of the day. I had a window to leave in the afternoon. If I missed the window, I stayed until 6:00 because traffic was so bad. I worked 6 to 6 a lot, but I never took work home.

I “start” at 8 but most days I’m at my desk between 7 and 7:15. That first hour is my most productive and best time to review anything that requires me to be sharp.
The biggest change for me is at the other end of the day. I used to stay until 5:45-6’ish. I started a new job last fall and I’ve been leaving between 5 and 5:30 as an attempt to have more balance.

The only reason I show up to work more than a few minutes early is if I've been out running errands or dropping my kids off places and I don't have time to do anything else between when I'm done with that and when I have to be at work. Usually that's not more than 30 minutes though.
I think you need to work on developing hobbies or leisure activities. It's fine to get up earlier if that works for you or it isn't worth the effort to try to change it, but that doesn't mean going to work is your only option.
I don't hate my job and I'm not proposing everyone should just put in the absolute minimum effort or anything, but the time I'm scheduled to work is their time. Everything else is MY time and I'm not going to just give it to them.
Amazing-Software4098@reddit
I start work at 9 and get to campus about 10 minutes before work. There are several times a year where I have to start early or stay late, and a few weekends with events. That’s all good.
That said, I’m not going to routinely come in early or stay late. The work will be there tomorrow. If there’s more than I can keep up with at certain times, that’s a management issue.
I have a family, friends, pets, hobbies, and interests. I’m not going to give any more time than I need to my job.
NoiseNecessary4737@reddit
I start at 8. If I get the train I'm there for 7.45. If I take the bike, I'm there between 7.15 & 7.35 depending on traffic and weather. But I also have smoke breaks & I'll leave early if I've clocked up enough time. If I was forced to work to 4.15 (proper finish time) I'd just read a book or surf the internet at my desk. We already get paid a fraction of our worth so they're not getting free work from me.

At my last job I had fights with my supervisor, he arrived at 4AM and started work at 5AM, business hours started at 9AM, so I would arrive at 9 and he would constantly chastise me for not being present early enough. It was part of the reason I left that job.

My official (work from home) schedule is 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM Monday -Thursday. However, I have experienced a significant amount of stress over the last year which has caused insomnia. Instead of laying in bed waiting for it to be time to get up I started getting up as soon as I am awake and unable to go back to sleep. I start working right after I get up. Sometimes it’s 4 AM. I am lucky that I can adjust my schedule. I know many can’t do that.

Shift change is at 0715….. I've been coming into work for the last 30 years at almost exactly the same time, ten minutes to seven. Why? When I started my career, we had long, hot days in the field and that's when we started. I'm a creature of habit but also not a morning person. As my work progressed to more of an office-based experience, I realized that I need that first hour to be one with hardly anyone around. If I show up in the morning and everyone is already there or just coming in themselves, I'm extremely annoyed. By coming in early, I'm already in gear to deal with people.
EggSpecial5748@reddit
I do this as well, more so when I have a lot going on at work. Other people work late so me staying extra doesn’t necessarily mean extra time for my own work tasks, but almost nobody gets in early so those hours are 100% for me

Eagle_1776@reddit
be ready to roll when the time hits. not show up at that moment
charitytowin@reddit
You haven't answered the question yet, does he get his work done?
If he's forward facing and needs to be, say, answering phones the second his time starts, then I get what you're saying. But if he's like a lot of other people, where if they show up at say 9:04 but the work gets done, then the work is done. So which is it?
The key indicator is the quality of work done on schedule.
Eagle_1776@reddit
It does not add to his value. You could call it an indicator behavior
oh-pointy-bird@reddit
And why do you care? Are you running a small business that you own? If so, then I sort of get it. If not, you’re licking corporate boots.
Eagle_1776@reddit

Unfortunately the shift that follows me thinks so long as they are at the secured gate by quarter after, they're on time since it means they were parked by starting time. When I was young & working in an office my theory was that these people hated their wives/kids/home life. It was always men age 30 & up that got to work way early and/or had an hour+ one way commute. And they always seemed some manner of dull/dead in the inside if not outright negative. My take was that it was avoidant, they didn’t want to be at home with the family/chores, either because the home was an outright unhappy place for them or the car/office was the only space of their own.
When I was young I would have judged them for that but now I understand raising a family, intimate relationships, home responsibilities, etc. are hard & often go through particularly trying times. If getting to the office early or intentionally designing a very long commute in order to get some personal space/peace helps people get through the day then so be it. So long as it’s a temporary cope for when things are especially rough & not decades long absenteeism.

Go to the gym. Lots of people work out from 6 to 7am. It’s easy once you get used to it.
OddSignificance9742@reddit
My clock in time is 6am. I’m usually clocking in from 6-6:06.
ICanHasBirthday@reddit
I worked in cybersecurity so there was a morning routine every morning of making sure backups worked, checking logs for new cyber activity, dealing with any failed security patches applied the night before, etc. As manager, I told the team I would take the brunt of the load. That let me get in at 6:00 am and then start trying for the door by 3:30-4:00 pm.
The manager of the engineering team tinkered in his home lab at night so her often wouldn’t get to bed until 1:00 am. He shifted his hours to 9:00 - 6:00 pm so there was always a manager on site 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
If you can work out some kind of setup like that, it was nice to always drive in on empty highways at 5:30 am and be at the front of the wave of rush hour traffic going home. I was usually home before 5:00 pm and got time with the kids while my wife made dinner when they were small. It worked out well all the way around.
Of course, I’m a six-and-a-half-hour a night sleeper. I would hit the sack around 10:00 pm, be up at 4:45 am and on the road by 5:15 am.
NaughtyLittleDogs@reddit
My husband has i've always been an early risers but middle-aged sleep issues have messed with his schedule. Is it salaried employee then makes his own schedule. So he just works from 6 to 3. It's great because he gets home around the same time as our kids. But it's also annoying because he's usually in bed before 9. If we ever have something to do in the evening, he's yawning and asking whether we can go home at 8.
Finding_Way_@reddit
I'm a very early riser and morning worker. But I have flex hours so I love it because sometimes my work day ends by 1:00 p.m.
If you can't flex your time and use those early arrivals to your advantage? I agree with others that maybe get in the habit of going to the gym in the morning, taking a nice morning walk, jog, or bike ride. Have more leisurely cups of coffee and read a devotion or book.
Anything that will use the time to your advantage!

My job starts @ 7:00am everyday and stops @ 5:00pm. I get there a bit early and leave a bit late every day.
Gamecockgirl79@reddit
My hours are 8:00 to 5:30 and I'm generally here just in time. Like 7:55 and I'm just rolling in the parking lot on a normal day. I live in a college town and they just got out a little over a week ago so that's helped traffic considerably and I may be a few minutes earlier but that's it. Considering most of my coworkers, including the ones old enough to be my parents are even later than I am, I'm good with it.
LifeguardRepulsive91@reddit
I consider my commute to be a part of my work day. I show up around 930 and leave around 430. (I work straight through with no breaks.)
If you are going in early to leave early, great. But if you're just giving your company unpaid labor, that's crazy.
Go for a walk or jog. Go to the gym or a yoga class. Drink coffee and listen to music. Read. Go out for breakfast. I find it hard to believe there is nothing you can do with a few hours that you would enjoy.
LolaBabyLove@reddit
I have a coworker who was showing up at 630 for a job that starts at nine. She’s older and ‘doesn’t sleep much’ so she wanted to get up and moving. Boss man had to tell her to stop because of potential labor law concerns. (She’s hourly.) This world is screwy sometimes.

I get in at 6 AM. I'm not by nature a morning person, but before we got recalled to the office, when we had the option to work from home, I used the extra time not commuting to fill my life with additional activities. Now the only way I can fit them in and still see my wife during the week is to start my day much earlier than I would prefer.

Bob_12_Pack@reddit
My hours are typically 8-5. I was consistently 15 minutes late to work when I was commuting to the office (34 miles one-way). If I left a little earlier, I'd hit school bus traffic, still late. It didn't matter as we have a 7-9AM start window, but most folks shoot for 8. I usually planned for 45 minutes to get ready, and a 45 minute commute, so I would get up between 6-6:30 and help wake the kids up for school. I went hybrid in 2007 (2 days at home) so on the remote days I may even cook breakfast.
Since 2020 I work from home full time, the alarm is set for 7:30. I get up and let the dog out, check in to work by 8, I'm never late, and rarely early.

Does your work have a fixed schedule or can you flex to 7a-4p instead of 8a-5p? I can start as early as I want and leave when I’m done. If you have to stay until 5p regardless of what time you arrive, that’s pretty restrictive.
KurtStation68@reddit
I start at 0530, up by 0415 - and zonked out by eight thirty. But getting off by 2pm frees up a lot of time for errands, games and a nap. Thing about streaming services is not having to worry about scheduling around a broadcast .

I’m always first in because I don’t have time to do necessary tasks during my day. I can stay late to get everything done (as most of my colleagues do) or come in early to get things ready for the day.
I found that after work, I’m too exhausted to do anything—I have to be hypervigilant all day long, and literally can’t even use the washroom during my workday. So I come in early and do my prep and marking before I’m decision-fatigued out.

My first post college white collar job was 9-5 with an hour lunch. So after you subtracted for lunch you were expected to work 35 hours a week. I only had one other job like that. All of my other jobs after you subtracted your lunch break you were expected to work either 37.5 or 40 hours a week. I even had one job where AFTER subtracting for your lunch break you were expected to work 45 hours a week and most jobs I've had (maybe all?) if you worked at least 6 hours they subtracted .5 or 1 hour for your lunch break regardless of if you actually took one.
marle217@reddit
The earliest work schedule I've had was 6am-2:45pm. The 8-5 schedule that's most common (because a paid lunch is apparently not a thing) is terrible in the winter because you leave in the dark and get home in the dark. Though a 7-4ish schedule gets you out before it's dark, and gives you time to schedule appointments before the end of the work day, without being crazy early. So that's what I do now.
Smartman244@reddit
When I was working I would start at 8 and end at around 4:45. I would take 1 hour for lunch and 30 minutes for coffee mid morning. I got all my work done and would beg my boss for more. I was his special project man. I had so much extra time on my hand. I surfed the internet for hours every day. When another employee when out on long term medical leave ( 1 year) I did his job as well. They pushed my boss out of his job. I ended up doing my bosses job as well. Everything was well done. Mgt became upset that I took an hour for lunch. But I was doing 2 person’s work. So I retired. Happy that I did that.

I am almost always the first person in the building every day (about 645). Nice thing about being so early is that no one is really sure when you came, so anytime you leave seems reasonable. But yeah, I pretty much just go in when I am up and get it over with. Beating traffic both ways is my reward.

I COULD be up as early as 4:30 but some days I force myself to stay in bed until 5. Out the door by 5:20, in at 6. Outlook on my watch has already been pinging for nearly an hour with items sent by techs that need addressing the moment I punch in.

I'm only a year behind you, but I had children later in life, so we are still on that schedule. That said I definitely understand waking up ridiculously early and laying in bed hoping for sleep until I just give up.
I used to have colleagues who would use those early hours to answer emails from home.
Personally, I would use that time for exercise if I didn't need to frear waking other people up and didn't have to shuffle children. So maybe exercise in the morning to buy time?
Finally, 6:45 doesn't sound rediculous. Back when I was growing up on a farm every around seemed to be done with morning chores and had tractors going in the fields by about 7:00 in the morning. Dude, that is prime stretch/cardio/lift time. Motion is lotion baby, not going to get better. Must fight gravity. Sitting in your car? What?
roytheodd@reddit
I'm in the company parking lot at least a half hour before my shift begins. I eat breakfast there. I'm trying to develop the habit of walking for that time just to use the time productively, and to get in my steps.
My early bird syndrome started 10 or 15 years ago as we had pets that wanted to go out before I left. I pushed my alarm earlier to accommodate. After years of that pattern, I was getting up early even without the alarm and even on days off. In 2026, though, my sleep is ruined; there are days when I'm up at 3 a.m. and days when I get to "sleep in" until 5. I struggle to get six hours of sleep on any given night. Five hours is my common actual number now. Sometimes it's because of my bladder, or my cat, or my active mind, or who knows. I'm not fond of it.
BortWard@reddit
I used to like getting to work really early because I hate traffic. The longest job I've had since completing training was about 25 minutes from home with minimal traffic, but close to an hour or more in heavier rush hour traffic. This was at a hospital and fortunately the place where I sat was down the hall from a locker room, so I would bring my stuff, roll in by 5:45 or 6 at the latest, and shower at work. Huge time-saver. Nowadays (different job) I'm getting there around 7:30 to 8
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
That would be ideal to have a gym on site. I do have a gym membership, I guess I could start going before work. It just seems such an odd thing to do, but maybe it's more common than I'm thinking.
7eregrine@reddit
Odd thing to do? But sitting in your car at work for an hour is normal?
Go to the gym. I think you're going to be completely blown away by how busy it is in the morning.
damnfoolbumpkin@reddit
I'd encourage you to give it a try. Over 20 years ago I made the switch from going to the gym ni the evenings to going in the mornings before work. The habit really agreed with me, and I never wanted to switch back after that.
Desperate-Ruin9481@reddit
Been trying to do this as well, not perfect, but trying 😂
CoachOpen1977@reddit
During the week it doesn’t matter what time I show up for work as long as I put my hours in. I usually roll in between 9 and 10 and leave around 5. I do have to get in bright and early every Sunday to open, but there’s never traffic and my commute is only 1.5 miles. Sadly I cannot bike to work as the one road that I can take is unsafe to bike on.
merkthejerk@reddit
You should go to the gym.
OptiGuy4u@reddit
05:30. Usually the first one in.
But I'm out at 3:30 and 4-10 hr days means a 3 day weekend every time!
red08171@reddit
If you're on time, you're late. I'm always at work at least a half hour before I start. I work outdoors, so I like to see the sun rise and get adjusted to the weather of the day.
RustBeltLab@reddit
There is something to being up, outside with the sunrise. I am jealous of the good weather sunrises you get!
arlenroy@reddit
My high-school football coach said the same thing, ever since then I'm always 15 minutes early for everything, I'm over an hour early for work. It's my moment of Zen. I work 12 hour shifts, 6am to 6pm, I get to work early and listen to a podcast then dose off for a bit. My alarm goes off and I'm raring to go. I always wake up early anyways, either have to pee a few times or have a wicked leg cramp. Oh the joys of hurdling towards middle-age.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I agree - on time, you're late! 730 used to be my target time but it's slowly creeped back earlier and earlier
Crafty-Bass-3434@reddit
I work from home, and these days I am up and at the computer by 6. That just means I can end my day earlier or take extended breaks throughout the day without losing any productivity.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I try to do this too, take extended lunches so I don't get burnt out. But most days I have so many meetings that I can't.
Crafty-Bass-3434@reddit
That's unfortunate. Hopefully they are good, engaging meetings.
TheOtherElbieKay@reddit
You must not have kids.
Trandoshan-Tickler@reddit
I start my office work at 7am, but I'm usually opening the office around 5:45-6 am.
DorianGre@reddit
why are you giving a corporation your extra time?
draggar@reddit
My shift starts at 6:30, I'm usually in at 6.
BUT - in a previous job my shift started at 7:30 but I was usually in by 6:30 to avoid the traffic and timed traffic lights.
Rich_Group_8997@reddit
I used to get to work at 5:30am (i had to leave my house at 4). A big reason was to avoid traffic, as i would leave work at 3 and was home before rush hour got started. It was also nice to have the peace and quiet to sip my coffee and get stuff done before other people showed up. Although there were a handful of guys who were in by 6 or 6:30.
Marc_Quadzella@reddit
I also get up very early now. I do 15 minutes on Duolingo then I walk for 45 minutes in the morning before showering and getting my day started. It really sets the tone for the day.
butterflygardyn@reddit
My husband has always done that. He's usually in the office an hour before anyone else. He says he gets more done in that hour than he does the rest of the day.
International-Rip970@reddit
830a when I should be there at 8a. The priority is getting the work done
Intrepid-Entrance460@reddit
Whether in office or WFH, I'm "at work" by 6:30.
timfinn1972@reddit
9pm -4:45 am = ~8 hours sleep which is perfectly normal.
If only there was a logical method to make sure you still got 8 hours sleep but woke up 2 hours later.
FowlTemptress@reddit
I‘m the only early bird in my department - everyone else seems to come alive at 3:30 pm. So it would be disruptive for me to start work before 9am. I’ve started doing some housework in the early mornings - it’s nice not to have to do chores after work. I did laundry at 5am this morning.
OBB76@reddit
I roll out of bed around 630, walk 10ft and start working
MoosePenny@reddit
I’m always coming in hot, so I can’t relate!
originalmosh@reddit
I start working by 6 every morning, Most days I go until 5-6, some days I work until 8 at night. I have owned my own sign shop since 1993 and have been doing this the whole time.
pwaltman1972@reddit
Go to the gym before work?
Altruistic-Panda-697@reddit
I used to arrive between 5:30 and 6:00 am. Just retired and now sleep til 7!
Desperate-Ruin9481@reddit
45 minutes early here, but that’s so I can smoke & talk shit with my work bestie, otherwise we might explode once we start 🤘
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
See, I love this! I wish I had a work bestie. I used to at another place I worked at and we'd walk all over for a good 30 minutes every day, talking about everything and everyone. It was therapeutic.
Desperate-Ruin9481@reddit
Yeah, it really is! We were in the same training class, and then never saw each other (different offices) for 6 years. Then crossed paths again and thick as thieves ever since 🫣
But if he wasn’t there I’d be in the same boat as you! for some reason sitting home alone that early bugs me so I just get moving, even though there’s nothing to move onto yet.
chloe38@reddit
Well I start at 6 and usually arrive at 6:07-6.15 lol just like today it’s 5:03 and I should already be in the shower but no I’m here sitting on the can. lol luckily I’m the manager so no one knows I’m late lol
AnnieB25@reddit
Work starts at 8, I get there around 7:20 because parking is sparse.
Weird-Ninja8827@reddit
I log on around 7:00 am daily, work for home for an hour or so, then drive in missing at least some of the traffic, and stay until 5 or so.
TemperReformanda@reddit
At times I arrive as much as an hour early while it's still dark (we start 6am) because that's the only hour of peace and low-stimilus I ever get.
trUth_b0mbs@reddit
when I was going into the office, I would get there for 730am. The rest of the office didn't roll in until closer to 830 or 9, some even 10am.
my husband gets to the office around 6am.
typhona@reddit
I dont have a typical 9-5 mon - Friday type job, im a stagehand. However i try to get to any gig roughly an hr before im supposed to start working. Then I sit in my car and eat breakfast/lunch/ whatever and play around on my phone. I could do all that at the house but then I'd have to race to work. I dont want to ever be sitr8ng at a red-light thinking about if it doesn't change now, im going to be late.
Candleforce-9728@reddit
Do something else with your morning. Do yoga. Plant some flowers and tend them in the morning. Read the whole newspaper over coffee. Take a mosaic course and do mosaics. Buy a used Lego set and build it bit by bit each morning.
BooRadley_Esq@reddit
6am. My millennial and Gen Z counterparts usually don’t show until 8. I can ease into my morning and leave earlier, win/win.
railworx@reddit
"Office" lol
Robviously-duh@reddit
before I quit and started just doing consulting work, I would be there an hour early and stay an hour late Monday thru Wednesday Thursday I took off at 3:30 for fun with son and Friday I was done at 2:00.. I adapted well to flex time.. hours expanded when projects made it necessary.. now I work on my own schedule..
NeatMathematician126@reddit
I exercise in the mornings, so I get to work at 8a like most people.
If you don't have an exercise routine I'd encourage you to find a gym near you with group classes. The communal element can really help motivate you. Many gyms have classes as early as 5a.
briank53207@reddit
Exactly this. Be productive with that time and go for 40 minute walks or to a gym.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Yes, looks like the gym is the best option. I tried cleaning the house before work but there's only so much cleaning one can do.
La_Mano_Cornuta@reddit
Up at 4:30 at work at 5:30 and leaving around 3 PM. I work with a small team and we are IT for a US firm so it's nice that we can stagger in to allow more coverage across time zones. Was military before this, when / if I retire I look forward to becoming a night owl again.
Historical_Project86@reddit
I used to cycle to the office, and I would prefer to do that earlier to miss the traffic, so I would be at my desk by 7am. Now, I WFH. I'm up at 5, walk the dog, go for a run, have breakfast, and I'm ready to start by 8ish.
DontTickleTheDriver1@reddit
100% remote so I am pretty flexible
SouthOrlandoFather@reddit
Woah. I only had a “9 to 5” job for 90 days in 2001 and had to get out as I was miserable.
Kindly-Might-1879@reddit
I WFH. My kids are gown and moved out. I love working out before work, then walking my dog, any time between 5-8a. Shower, breakfast, then log in at 9a.
I don’t see the need to give my job any more presence than required.
Black-EyedSusan96@reddit
I would get there early to get ready for the school day.
michelepixels@reddit
I arrive 5-10 minutes before I have to be at work. I have a walk, read, and relax in my big comfy chair at home before going to work. I’ve even made scrapbook pages or worked on other personal projects before work.
who-waht@reddit
Start taking a morning walk or run or bike ride before heading into the office.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
I actually like the idea of a bike ride. It's been years since I've ridden one.
MingusPho@reddit
I'm the same way. Started with the military in 95. Now I can't sleep past 4:30. Everyday I've been sitting at the office at least an hour before anybody shows up, looking like a dumbass at every job I've ever worked. Now I'm just tired of it. Even when I set out to be late, I'm still the first guy through the door by at least 15 minutes.
smithe68@reddit
A little before 6am for me but that’s when I start. I wake up between 4:30 and 4:40 every day, no alarm needed, and it’s a rare treat if I sleep in until 6 on a day off.
Xavelle@reddit (OP)
Same! The weekends, I might "sleep in" till 6.
REDDITSHITLORD@reddit
I cook my family breakfast at 5:20, clean house from 5:45 to 7:00, then go on my run. &:45, get cleaned up for work, then I bike to work at 8:30. By the time I'm at work, I've been kickin' it for 4 hours. That having been said, I usually take a nap on my lunch, and am pretty lazy after work.
Aplaceandatime@reddit
Take up running!

I thought about that, or at least start walking the neighborhood.
johnnyg08@reddit
Goodness...find something else to do in the morning besides drive to work and sit in the parking lot. Dang

6:30 AM working an 8-5 from home. I sometimes knock off around 4 and take a longer lunch but I start work when my wife leaves for her work.

Walk to my desk at 9am (wfh). I take walks, cook, anything but start early if I can avoid it.
