Japan was supposed to develop a miniaturized clear air turbulence lidar in the early in the 2000 with boeing. But I dont hear any news about it anymore. I wish the continued with the project and put it into planes. I feel Very disappointing that the project just vanished.

All the people saying CAT did not read the report. The strong updraft caught them from underneath and caused severe turb. Updraft dominated stages of thunderstorms can be smaller hydrometeor sizes that won't show up on a WSR 88D (US ground based Doppler radar system). I'm not sure how sensitive the airplane wxr's are but if the droplets were small, i can see the pilots not seeing the returns. I would venture to guess when the DAL56 final report comes out, we're going to see a lot of the same themes here.

That’s generally how CAT works. Radar isn’t magic.

The report all but says the crew flew through or uncomfortably close to a convective cloud top and then lied about it and claimed it was in clear air. The report estimates the updraft as having been 8000-9000 fpm, describes it explicitly as convective-induced, and notes that there is a strong possibility the radar was under-painting or no-painting weather returns. They also say they cannot explain why the crew did not see the clouds that several other flights and satellites were seeing.

Unless it was Random Aircraft Directly Ahead Reporting. 🤣

Believe it or not, turbulence is not depicted on radar.
Mbizzy222@reddit
Did you guys bother to read it? There was an apparent problem with this model of radar.
takecareofurshoes13@reddit
lol exactly. The report clearly says they went through a rapidly growing cloud and had to remove a sunshade after the fact, which likely means they missed it due to the shade.
BeenThereDoneThat65@reddit
That’s how it works. We can’t see CAT on radar
Substantial-Doubt258@reddit
Well seeing as radar doesn’t really show turbulence…

News surprising absolutely nobody in the industry
