Congrats!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I can't wait to get in her!
dohzer@reddit
Do a barrel roll?
Gypsy__Traveler@reddit
In a C-172?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
1g rolls are safe in almost any plane. Test pilot did em in a 727 once
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
Just about airplane should be able to do a positive-G roll, true, (or a loop) but some might not be strong enough to survive the airspeed and Gs from dishing out of the roll (or falling out of the loop) and panic-yanking the yoke. Or not survive doing it many times.
Aerobatic category aircraft are demonstrated to be able to take it.
Gypsy__Traveler@reddit
I agree w/ the +G
However, he said he likes to fly "instruments" and, well, C-172 instruments are not designed for aerobatic maneuvers.
Also, you usually are not skilled to fly a 1G roll out of the gate.
Just be careful.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'll be careful sir!
richardizard@reddit
I really hope you're not gonna do a barrel roll on a 172....
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Only what the poh states is acceptable mr sir man
Figit090@reddit
I've done one in real life in an aerobatic airplane. Went great
Tried it in a certified simulator using a 172 and died.
I just wouldn't. Their roll rate is shit.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'll start reallll high up
AverageAircraftFan@reddit
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
There's the pic!!!!!!
Babna_123@reddit
I dont thing it’s allowed unless your aircraft is in the aerobatic category :(
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah it has a placard on it that tells u what manuvers its certified for even if it's not acrobatic
Babna_123@reddit
Yeah correct👍
Any other maneuvers not on the list are not permitted
Babna_123@reddit
Pilot’s operating handbook says all aerobatic maneuvers are not allowed except Chandelles Lazy Eights Steep Turns Spins Stalls (except whip stalls)
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Oh buddy it's my own damn plane :D She's gonna do some flying I'll tell you what
finnknit@reddit
I like that you call it your "first" plane. Do you plane to buy more planes in the future?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Oh you better fucking believe it. I want a vision g2 badddd
richardizard@reddit
Same here and I don't have my license yet lol
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
U better get to flying yesterday!
Binspin63@reddit
Toast: May you work your way up to that Gulfstream someday! Congrats!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Thanks brother I'll get there I swear
BallApprehensive169@reddit
The vision is a dream jet of mine
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Man they would see my rollin down the ramp and theyed be hating ;)
z3roTO60@reddit
At least in this “hobby” you typically only have one at a time. In others like motorcycles, cars, guns, guitars, etc, the rule is:
Number you need = n+1, where n is the current number you have
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Now I want a 7 seater lol. But ya I would probably sell this if I got another one
z3roTO60@reddit
Could I ask why a 7 seater? Not hating on your preference, just curious
For me, I would prefer to upgrade to something newer. Basically a Cirrus SR22. Newer avionics and honestly, the parachute capability seems priceless (especially with loved ones on board)
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I would love to take my whole family on trips!!!!
MsMarji@reddit
Ok, give us the specs…
Cessna 172…
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
172m 9800 hours on airframe 500 hours on the new ram since the overhaul in 2024, current annual. Gtn 650 gnx345, sl30 gma 350, cost me 70k usd
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
That’s pretty good. You’ve got one from back when the old timers were shooting the rivets.
Also the last model with 40-degree flaps. It’s hard to ever be too high with those.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
That's good cuz I seem to prefer decending at at an angle and speed that would make the shuttle proud
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
I lucked into mine at a good price just before the 172 market went bonkers. Took a few years to get it in shape for a decent VFR plane.
Been to Oshkosh twice in it and all over my home state. Hopefully my son can finish up his PPL in it.
Ask the internet about slips with flaps if you dare.
south-shore0@reddit
What’s wrong with slipping with flaps?
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
They’re placarded “avoid slips with flaps extended.” As I understand, the vortex from the flaps interferes with the elevator/horizontal stab in a hard slip.
You get an oscillation in the yoke and a partial loss of elevator effectiveness. How big a deal that is differs from user to user.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ahhh I see now, it's only at flaps 40
China_bot42069@reddit
naa the ones i fly/flew 78' models had it too on any flap setting
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Huh no shit what's the talk about how they got rid of that language for some years?
andrewrbat@reddit
I don’t think that concept only applies to flaps 40. The newer Cessnas all have that placard too but no flaps 40
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I read about the history of it and it's been given and take on their rec, but at one point that said only an issue at flaps 40
andrewrbat@reddit
Idle, full flaps, 60 kts drop like a rock, or the shuttle lol no need to tempt “stall spin” fate
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Fuck I'm sold brother I'll let you know how it goes
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
It was enough of an issue that Cessna limited flaps to 30 in later models. The oscillation and low-to-no climb rate with flaps 40 and 150hp were a little more “character” than some flight schools cared for.
Learning to “milk” the flaps up quick enough to build airspeed but not so fast you sink back into the runway with the momentary flap switch is definitely something you should spend time with a CFI on.
It’s a “boring” airplane — if such a thing exists — but the old 172s with all the flaps will slip like a Cub or a Champ. It’ll come down like an elevator.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'll be alright I'm good at milking machines lol
LaloMcNombres@reddit
I’ve flown at least a dozen 172s (well, Skyhawks and 172s). Slipped them all with flaps and only one dogged out N oscillated like crazy. Little unnerving.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
They catch me slipping with flaps from time to time, why should I avoid it oh wise internet?
electric_conniptions@reddit
You’ll probably find you’re required to have that placard. You can certainly redo it so it looks nicer though
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Dang no shit? And the smoking And seat belt stuff? I've flown planes without them
hyperduc@reddit
Lmao as someone who was able to witness a few shuttle landings you gave me a fantastic visualization!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
It's always the same for me, finish my turn to final and look down.... Oh shit well we better get down there quick! Time to slip so hard I'm looking out the side window!!
MrB10b@reddit
Hi as someone who doesn't know much about cessna submodels, why did they stop doing the 40° flaps? Safety issues?
zombie-yellow11@reddit
172N had 40° flaps too :) the 172P was the first to be limited to 30° !
jefanell@reddit
172N had 40 degree capable flaps also.
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
I did not know that. Thanks!
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
However the M is still technically the last one with the old flap switch (the one that you have to keep holding down to lower the flaps) rather than the lever that’s used today.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
No shit no detents? How do I know when I get to each setting?
Ausgeflippt@reddit
You count and learn to push the nose down with it.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Seat if the pants kinda shit I'm down
Ausgeflippt@reddit
It's a continuous switch, so it makes cleanup super easy. Just remember that flaps will kill you, but carb heat won't.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
But you gotta hold ur finger in it the entire time right?
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
Only when lowering the flaps do you have to keep holding the switch down. When raising them you can flip it up and it will remain up.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Well shoot if I ever have any questions I'm just gonna post em here! What a dang resource we got on reddit!
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
Hold on there soldier. XD Yes you might get some decent answers from Reddit here and there but I’d advise to go to a CFI for questions.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Sounds like something a cfi with some loans would say.... 🤣
Ausgeflippt@reddit
No. It has three positions- top is retract, middle is stop, bottom is extend.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Sweet so just don't forget you set it and it good.
Ausgeflippt@reddit
That's the point of the nose push. You'll flip the switch down, count to 3 as you slowly apply forward pressure, and then put the switch at middle. Rinse and repeat until you land. You get to a point where it's super smooth and passengers will have no idea you're suddenly way slower and about to land.
Kinda easy to overspeed the flaps if it's hot and humid.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Dang that's kinda great instead of dumping em almost once and having to catch the balloon
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
No detents. You just gotta look at the flap position indicator.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Sweet so I can go halfway between positions?
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
You are the master of your flap position. If you want to crank them down an eigth of an inch for takeoff, by God, you can do it.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Fuck yesss, now that's a pilots plane!
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
One thing I’d like to add about the flap switch: if you want to lower the flaps you have to hold the switch. But if you want to raise them, you can set the switch to the “up” position and it will raise them all the way to zero. Just something to be aware of when retracting the flaps when doing a go around.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
That's pretty logical I like that, but ya go around if you hit it it's dumping then
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
They go up a little too fast to “dump.” You still have to “milk” them up. While pushing carb heat and power and managing elevator and rudder and trim.
It becomes a very big deal when you’re loaded close to gross on a hot day.
Use your third hand for the flaps, but try it with a CFI first. It’s a trick that must be learned carefully.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the advice! Always nice to get some useful knowledge out of reddit lol
UnbuiltAura9862@reddit
Yup! And I would take what u/TheOriginalJBones said as well.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Love the nose dip thing gonna try that
falcopilot@reddit
Count three seconds for every ten degrees.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Noice
jefanell@reddit
Yep, the N I trained in had the detents for flap positions. Of course the detents were worn to shit by the time I trained in it. I *loved* the 40 degrees of flaps option. Touch-down speed at stall was around 40 kts depending on weight etc.
AlBundyPolk33@reddit
I cracked my knuckles and was ready to drop the “well akchually” but you got him!
Figit090@reddit
Northern California as in....north of Santa Rosa? Or Norcal as in Bay Area/central?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Northern as in the real northern! State of Jefferson North of redding
Zilla7854@reddit
70 Grand for the whole plane!!!!
Holy smokes what a deal
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Comes with seat and everything!!! Still mind blown they let me get away with it
Zilla7854@reddit
Please post some vids when you fly here. 🎉
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I will! I'll Livestream the whole coast to coast if anyone is interested!
Foreign-Ad-8247@reddit
Coming to STS?

Aromatic_Razzmatazz@reddit
That's actually a really, really good deal. Tell your wife we said so.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ohhh she's heard about it day and night for weeks! When I tell her I basically made 58k in a day she says, "well then show me the money!" 😭
JayGerard@reddit
That is what you call a major score.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Is that what the kids call it these days? I heard it was skibbydy af
MsMarji@reddit
Thanks
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya no problem, pysched it's LPV capable for approaches down to 200 feet. Gonna do my instrument asap
MsMarji@reddit
Sweet, instrument is the way to go. Fly in more conditions.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Im a sim child so I have to remind myself to look outside lol. Very comfortable with instruments
Frankenplane@reddit
Yes, in VMC you always need to see and avoid. The rIght-of-way does not distinguish between flight rules! Keep that in mind when you get your instrument rating! Have fun with your plane!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Damn right. I've been working on using visual reference for my maneuvers like steep turns instead of just being glued on pegging my needles
Duckbilling2@reddit
do you also go on the r/flying sub
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah I will now though!
BLACKzj52@reddit
Thats funny. Ive got ~1300 hours on MSFS and am about 8 hrs into my PPL training and keep reminding myself to look outside.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
When you got your head down and everything looks right it just feels so safe and disconnected from the world. Then you look outside and it's like oh ya....
srdev_ct@reddit
That’s actually a good price given the engine and avionics. Can I ask how/where you found it?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Found it on controller! I thought it was a scam at first and so did my bank lol
shadeyyyy_@reddit
70K is a steal with those specs
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya got lucky bankruptcy trustee didn't know shit from shinola
Frosty_Spinach9844@reddit
I know this plane stupid well and I'm not the buyer. Its got the ram 160 hp with a Garmin 650 with waas I have 600+ hours in her!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Dude pm me! You are the second person that has flown this plane to comment! I'm texting the other dude right now lol! Know anything about the broken radio lol?
Frosty_Spinach9844@reddit
I know exactly who you are talking about. I'm a 25 year old boomer when it comes to credit so it might take me a min to PM you
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nuts that two people on this thread have flown the thing
Frosty_Spinach9844@reddit
We both worked at the school, I hired on the other guy when I was the office manager / cfi there
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Small effing world
gimmedemels@reddit
Do you like it?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Havent even got to touch her yet 🥺
rhinocerosjockey@reddit
I’m a lurker who doesn’t know much but really wants to learn and get my pilot license, and owning something like this would be a dream. Congrats. Hope to follow your footsteps one day.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Do it dude! I just started less than a year ago. I just realized one day that if I'm gonna fly I better fucking do it right now. This thing only cost me 10k down 550 a month and 2200 a year insurance. Make "one day" today.
PM_YOUR_AKWARD_SMILE@reddit
Where abouts in northern Cali? Like roughly, you don’t have to dox yourself here.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Within 1 hour of redding
FistMyPeenHole@reddit
Nice! I used to live in Cottonwood. I'll bet Shasta is amazing to fly around!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Never flown here yet! Gonna be jumping in the deep end!
PM_YOUR_AKWARD_SMILE@reddit
If you ever fly down to Buchanan Airfield in Concord let me know lol.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Heck ya you fly outta there?
PM_YOUR_AKWARD_SMILE@reddit
Na, I’m just an aviation enthusiast, only mess around with a home simulator. But I’m right by that airfield.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya sure I'll pick you up when I come down to the bay
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Pm me
Aaron707@reddit
Awesome plane! One hour by air? I am over on the coast in Humboldt. No PPL here, but I do like being a passenger.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah an hour north by car, my gfs sister lives in arcata so I want to fly there and to shelter cove if you wanna catch a ride!
rhinocerosjockey@reddit
Damn, you’re not wrong, I needed to hear that. I’m not getting any younger. I work near a small airport that offers lessons and I see little Cessna doing touch and gos all day when I walk on my lunch break. I need to get on this.
And sounds good, I’m in southern Washington so not too far away. If I find myself down your way I’ll shoot you a PM. Thanks for the motivation. Enjoy your new plane.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Dude my dad lives in virouqua! I'm definitely gonna fly to visit him and I'll whip u around.
You got this, nothing can stop you! Just walk in there and be like I want a discovery flight. If you are hooked like me ur brain will do the rest naturally haha
mzdee13@reddit
Congrats. A pre purchase inspection is always worth the cost. Fly safe and keep the blue side up.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Thank you sir! If you are ever in northern California come fly!
mzdee13@reddit
Careful, I may take you up on that. Hard to turn down stick time in Northern California
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'm a people person come on up!
mzdee13@reddit
That’s how hangar flying starts. One invitation and suddenly you’re splitting fuel bills and swapping bad weather stories.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Hahaha my gf will wonder what I'm doing with all these men
mzdee13@reddit
Now you’re speaking my language. Tough to beat NorCal flying on a clear morning.

mxvirii@reddit
Can i come with? 😂
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya sure why not! You in new Jersey?
mxvirii@reddit
Nope ahha, Berlin, Germany.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ahhhh bummer. Well if you ever come to northern Cali I'll give you a ride pm me!
iamprobablynotjohn@reddit
I'm in Norcal, I'll wave to you when you're coming in to land lol
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Haha small world! You fly?
iamprobablynotjohn@reddit
Nope, always wanted to. I'm getting into GIS, so maybe some aerial work is in my future, but who knows! I do love flying (as a passenger) when I get the chance
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Shit I'll take you for a ride! Can you get to redding?
thundergun67@reddit
Holler at me if you ever fly down to RHV
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Damn it looks nice!!! I will, I go to the bay alot so the plane will help. Is there a landing fee
thundergun67@reddit
No landing fee, free transient parking for a day but overnight is $13. Theres a bus line that runs along the airport and can take you to downtown SJ or to the mall off the departure end of RWY 13
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Sweet! No courtesy cars? :p
thundergun67@reddit
Idts unfortunately 😭 ive heard plenty about redding’s courtesy car, but ive never seen any of the FBOs at rhv have one. Wont hurt to call up tradewinds or aerodynamic to see but i do know there is a car rental on site
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Bastards! These big city airports don't trust me with a car lol. At the little fields I train at they always got a beater they will give u for a pic of ur cert
ResponsibilityOld164@reddit
I’m in Albany. If you’re seriously looking for someone to fly it XC with you, DM me.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya I am seriously looking for a copilot for my coast to coast relocation flight. I'll pm you
iamprobablynotjohn@reddit
Heck yeah I can! I live closer to Sac, but I love to drive. When are you around?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'm around every weekend basically, I'll fly down to you, never landed in sac yet. Pm me!
iamprobablynotjohn@reddit

HolidayBackground380@reddit
Seconding this request! Trade off and build hours???
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya sure you in Jersey with a license? My insurance has open pilot warranty!
WirelessWavetable@reddit
Did you have to pay for a professional inspection before purchasing?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Yep cost me 300 bucks
Swagger897@reddit
Agreed that it costs so low. Was the owner an a&p or the IA responsible for annuals? Did seller include inspection into sale? Or did the seller personally vouch for X inspector?
Last I was doing pre-buys i don’t think we’d touch one for less than 5%/$1000 unless it was a close friend. $300 bucks would be me doing a walk around and starting the engine and doing a static run-up but not touching a single screw or panel.
That said, get a cover for it if you haven’t already. If the plastic trim interior doesn’t instantly break when you touch it with a screwdriver then it can still be saved by protecting it from the sun.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nope a@p was not the owner. I got my own inspection with an independent a@p I found myself. He was cheap because he was really close to the airport. My a@p that did the inspection actually knew the owner and hated him so hopefully no favoriteism
Figit090@reddit
That's an odd/complicated relationship. Did he tell you "I hate this guy and you got a good deal, so that means he made less." or something similar?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah just said the old owner was trash. Lots of people have told me they hated him, wouldn't pay his bills. Shows why he went bankrupt
TheMisterPixel@reddit
Wow, I have no idea about these costs, but that sounds increadibly cheap for anything to do with aircraft.
Swwert@reddit
It is. They usually run around $1000
TheCreepyPL@reddit
Doesn't it depend on the plane though? I'd expect that it's cheaper for one of the most common planes than something more exotic.
Swwert@reddit
Yeah, for smaller less complex ones it’s around $1000
TheCreepyPL@reddit
Damn, what's the cost of "more complex ones" if you know by any chance?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Yep that's called one plane buck
falcopilot@reddit
AMU - Aviation Monetary Unit.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Got a good chuckle outa me
G25777K@reddit
lol $300 usually that’s what it cost just to have the inspection guy pick up the phone.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya I know he was an old timer that lives like 10 min from the Field. Son of a gun couldn't even figure out how to print with his new computer, had to send him to FedEx office to pick up the paperwork lol

Flintoli@reddit (OP)

prancing_moose@reddit
You know how expensive a divorce is these days? 🤣
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Easy just drop all ur money into a jet, leave the country. Good luck on the bankruptcy people getting you then!! Checkmate!
prancing_moose@reddit
I see that your wife isn’t fully qualified on the FIM-92 Stinger then? 🤪
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah but that wouldn't stop her from trying one 🤣
Acey_pilot@reddit
How will 200 people even FIT in that?!?
It would need to be, like, TWICE as big!!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
What's wrong with you Danny?? I've seen a pilot on go fasts before! Eyes can't focus, sweatin, your grounded damnit and I don't care that your parents got freeze dried!!

HiroProtagonist66@reddit
How did you luck out and find a deal like this?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Just like you said, pure luck, up really late browsing airplane classified, found one with three crappy pictures of the outside that looked like a scam. Read the scant details and my eyes were like the bugs Bunny cartoon lol. Got the inspection and low balled and here we are! Luckily the bankruptcy attorney the government appointed didn't know shit about planes and the judge that approved it didn't care lol
skisvega@reddit
So how old were you when you found out you hate money?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Hmmm gotta be when I bought my first motorcycle
Coreantes@reddit
I feel this, but for me it was owning boats. You should try it if you really want to feel what it's like to throw money in a void.
falcopilot@reddit
"Gosh, I like my plane but it's just not enough of a money pit. I should buy something that can land on water!"
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Hahahahahh ya fuck that
fabthefabricator@reddit
I was considering putting my 150 on floats. Decided to wait to upgrade and will be looking for a 206 to amphibionize
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Jesus will someone here think of the money!!!
Ouchies81@reddit
I've been randomly getting sailing/boating/yacht stuff in my feed. And man, feels like there are some kindred spirits over there.
Occams_ElectricRazor@reddit
As someone who has never been interested in boats , I hear that all the time but don't understand how they're so expensive. What is it that makes you throw money away?
jpizzel97@reddit
^^^ still has to be lower then owning a plane. Tell some of my co workers I may get a boat and they say it’s expensive and a money pit. My response is it can’t be worse then owning a plane
Coreantes@reddit
I mean, maintaining a 18ft or a 40ft differs a lot. It's not a competition between boats and planes, but I am sure that for what I paid for my boat and what I poor into maintenance, I could've also got my PPL, a small plane and maintain it.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya I feel like a nice boat it more to maintain than a cheap plane
Sriracha_Breath@reddit
If it flies, floats, or fucks… as they say
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Rent it!! I would but that shit is pricey brother
Aussie-Cowgirl@reddit
I guess horse come under the third section...
teahugger@reddit
Fun fact: Water striders do all 3
Coreantes@reddit
Elements. Two things effect a boat that are horrible: salt water and UV light. Things just degrade, besides just general wear and tear from usage. Sails need replacing, lines as well, the dodger is cloth most of the time as well. Gelcoat needs repairing, diesel engine needs service, which also goes for the saildrive. Under water you have anodes that wear, as well as antifoul, that needs replacing every year. Generally, every 10/15 years or so you even need to redo the whole of the bottom, because it's polyester and osmoses is a thing. In the end, GRP is porous. Should I continue? In the end, water (especially salt) will always win from whatever you throw at it.
Occams_ElectricRazor@reddit
Fuuuck
mayormongo@reddit
Yes
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
No. Never haha. Ide have to be really rich to get a boat
falcopilot@reddit
The amount of overlap between motorcycles and airplanes always blows me away.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Both of them take the right stuff to operate
falcopilot@reddit
OP doesn't hate money... OP hates _having_ money.

Hardly, I supported her for the last few years and paid off her bills when she died.

I love that you think this is a flex when really laying off the debt of a dead person shows you know nothing about money. Or you’re lying on the internet which is my guess.

She spent money on her credit cards for necessities...I'm just not the kind of person to blow off legitimate expenses. Sure I could have said f-you to the CC company but it was one last time of paying her bills and the right thing to do .....Downvote away.
I'm sure you're the type of person that justifies robbing a CVS because they're a big insured company and it "doesn't affect anyone"...sorry that isn't me.

Or miserable enough to feel the need to say this like you
OptiGuy4u@reddit
Miserable/jealous people are the folks who see someone enjoying life because they can afford it and have to shame them for being successful in life.
Oh, you bought a luxury item? You must just hate money .....it couldn't be that you worked hard and can afford it. 🙄
Unableduetomanning@reddit
He wasn’t shaming him, it was clearly a joke but you’re too autistic to discern.

Can you come to Haneda 💀
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya but I'll have to bring my snowboard not my plane lol. Can I stay with you?
SavingsCover4332@reddit
Ok, if you bring your plane we could fly in the mountain ranges, really beautiful!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Now that would be tough, ide have to ship it in a bigger plane. Haha cheaper for me to rent one while Im in japan

What was the deal
sharmander15@reddit
Congrats on being rich!
hercdriver4665@reddit
Rent it out a couple times in the first year to trusted people. The IRS considers airplanes for biz purposes to have a 7 year lifespan. Claim bonus first year depreciation and save A LOT on taxes.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Good idea I will
hercdriver4665@reddit
You seriously might be able to write off the entire airplane this year. Any “losses” that you can use this year would carry forward to the next.
Absolutely worth talking to a tax guy about it. It’s called “bonus” first year depreciation. Instead of writing off 1/7th each yr over 7yrs, you do it all at once.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Okay damn are you a tax guy?? I definitely want to go this route sounds like one of those rich person loopholes that I need to figure out if I'm gonna have a plane
hercdriver4665@reddit
I’m an anti-tax guy. Talk to a cpa about bonus first year depreciation

I can even get you an instructor while your there if you wanna get some pilot in command hours in my plane!
SnooDoubts246@reddit
This sounds so tempting… And seriously, if I wouldn’t have all this damn private things to do in the next few weeks, I would take few days off and fly it with you to California. This would be by far the most incredible tour I have ever made so far. Have fun!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Thanks bro pm me so I have your info! I've always wanted to go to Germany mabey we can chill there! I'm not gonna fly to Cali for a bit, it's gonna chill near Nashville so you might just be able to make the xc! I got a sky West first officer that's volunteering so far so we might have a packed plane lol

msct1835@reddit
Did you get a pre-buy inspection?
Only_Luck_7024@reddit
How much?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
70k usd. Appraised and insured at 128. Got it off a bankruptcy ;)
jhill9901@reddit
Yea. U ripped this. And with a fresh-ish motor. Very. Very well done. Putting money into avionics (the right ones) is never a bad choice and will appreciate it like crazy. Not like you need any more equity in this thing!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I know bro. I'm so psyched. It's got almost exactly the avionics I want! Just need a pair of g5s and I'm good
jhill9901@reddit
I kno many will disagree but yes Garmin is pretty much it. Buy once, cry once. But they hold their value in resell and their ecosystem just works. Got a few planes getting that treatment right now with more in the pipe. Yea dumping the vac system will be awesome. Are you just planning to train in it then maybe move on to somthing else?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Nah I'm gonna fly the wings off it all over creation! I agree I love the Garmin stuff, although I've tried dual av30s with a Garmin nav and they worked great!

Only_Luck_7024@reddit
How did you find someone with a plane and in the bankruptcy situation?
Usernamenotta@reddit
Could be a flight school or a club who went bankrupt, not necessary a single person. Also, take person, give person plane. Bankruptcy has entered the building when you opened the doors of the plane
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Bingo
Ops_check_OK@reddit
Heres what you do: lower the flaps full, grab the trailing edge of both flaps, and wiggle up and down. If they go up and down a lot the rollers and/or the flap tracks are worn. If the left flap goes up and down much further than the right, the cable tensions are also wrong. If these hold true and it wasn’t noted on the PPI then the inspection wasn’t very thorough.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Honestly for what I got it for I'm fine spending a bit extra ;)
Ops_check_OK@reddit
Yeah no you‘ll spend money. I was just saying that if you go and verify these flaps (which are low hanging fruit) and they didn’t get flagged IF they’re bad, I would just be concerned about the hard stuff that got missed. Also it’s a M model? I worked on a customers M model and it had the original engine metal cradle/frame and on an engine change I insisted they get it NDI‘d since it was OG condition and the shop found almost all welds to be cracked. Had to get the whole frame re-welded.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Well I guess Im just gonna fafo! I signed on The dotted line ;)
Ops_check_OK@reddit
Yeah no worries. Did you get a printed/written report on it? I’m just curious. What’s your plans for this plane?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya I had to get an inspection for the finance company. Gonna fly the heck out of it is my plans
falcopilot@reddit
2nd most terrifying thing you can do in general aviation, right after "first solo".
Same as getting past the first solo, afterward the ability to go fly on your own schedule because you can- unbeatable.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
The feeling of freedom I have is nuts
Difficult_Layer_666@reddit
Does your wife know?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Oh you mean the 25 times a day I remind her? I'm sure she's sick of it by now! Haha
CardinalOfNYC@reddit
The question is always the same for me... what does it feel like to have that kind of disposable income?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Hmmm u mean my 10k deposit, 2200 a year insurance and 550 a month payment? Feels like buying a mid priced sports car. As someone with two paid off old beaters I'm probably paying less monthly than most soccer moms with nice Subarua
CardinalOfNYC@reddit
I didn't ask what it feels like to buy it, I didn't ask what it costs (I already knew) I asked what it feels like to have that kind of disposable income.
You say "10k deposit" like it's nothing to spend on in a nation where like half the population couldn't come up with 1000 bucks in an emergency.
So, what does it feel like having enough disposable income to buy an airplane as an entirely discretionary purchase?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ummm I guess it feels like I'm making 4k a month before taxes and drive an old paid off beater so I felt like I could swing the plane.
Feels good to know that I'm not gonna be too poor for my whole life to ever afford to fly like I thought I would be
CardinalOfNYC@reddit
So it feels good. Thank you.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya forshure it does, you know how it goes, you want to be a pilot when it little but then life smacks ya! Rips ya broke through ur 20s and you think, well that was a kids dream only rich people get to fly. Then you make smart decisions, stop being an idiot, save up. Finally you have some extra cash and then instead of doing the smart thing and saving it you follow your dreams. Interesting feelings brother
CardinalOfNYC@reddit
Again, not asking how it feels to be a pilot, not asking how you got the money, asking how it feels to have the money.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Well I gave you all I had to give ahah not gonna lie you come across as a bit of a dick. You trying to check my privilege brah? 😭
GetOffMyGrassBrats@reddit
Always somebody to rain on somebody else's parade.
awajitoka@reddit
Being someone who has skimped on some things (like OP) so I could afford other non-essential things, it feels like I achieved a goal based on the sacrifices I’ve made.
Bottom line: it feels good to have disposable income to buy discretionary things, especially when you know you worked hard for the ability to do so.
BRAVO OP!
GetOffMyGrassBrats@reddit
Congratulations.
You know an airplane is like a tornado right? A hole in the sky that sucks away all of your valuables.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
If it's a hole I'll fuck it right back!
michepc@reddit
Will you keep the paint scheme?

Best day of my life when I purchased my '47 Bonanza. Second best day of my life, when I sold my '47 Bonanza.
Good luck, remember outside of your insurance and loan payments, you have annual inspection cost maintenance/upkeep depending on what is found. Plus tiedown/hangar fees.
It sounds like a great idea being a sole owner, but the costs will eat up your bank account and any extra income you may make.
What about the specs TSMO? total time, prop time ect.... All of that has to be factored into owning and operating an aricraft.
Congratulations, enjoy it... but know the costs can outweigh the benefits.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'm ready to sell blood to fly this baby ahha
me_myself_ai@reddit
Do you feel guilty about a hobby that has such a massive carbon footprint, especially considering the leaded fuel? Honest question -- I'm far from perfect myself, and partake in many luxuries that I couldn't justify to St. Peter.
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
The honest answer is that hassling working class people over a 70,000usd purchase of a 50yo single engine Cessna over climate concerns is the dumbest thing possible.
Every Cessna ever made is a rounding error on the climate impact and wealth concerns if private jets and military and commercial.
People like you hassle people who bought a $8000 bike "cause you're flashy and wasting cash" cause it's easier than tackling the real causes and it achieves nothing.
"Massive carbon footprint" is utterly ridiculous. It's a single engine Cessna with 9800 hours. Your car emits more carbon.
This is an utter rounding figure.
You may think you're fighting the good fight but you're just hassling working class people to cover uk you lack the conviction to fight the true carbon emitters
me_myself_ai@reddit
Oh cool so there's no point in ever taking any individual action on climate ever, yeah? That's awfully comforting. It must be nice to just sorta vaguely hope that one day it'll show up on the ballot, all clean and simple -- the rest of us are actually making sacrifices.
You are too, of course! You just won't admit it now. Unless you burn your trash and litter on a whim?
...no, it does not. I feel like y'all haven't googled this?
I'm not fighting any fight, I was asking a question I've wondered about for a long time. Asking a question is not "hassling".
How are you fighting them, specifically? Am I talking to a JustStopOil activist? Perhaps you're in the woods right now, plotting ecoterrorism? Or do you just mean "voting left but not too left and forgetting about it cause it's not comfy"?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Do you really think my 51 year old 4 cylinder plane is a problem?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
You smack that troll down for me brother!!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Me burning 8 gallons an hour cruise is not a massive carbon footprint lol. Don't let the industrial polluters convince you that you are the problem. That is a goal of theirs.
me_myself_ai@reddit
Ahhh so you're just unaware of the massive carbon footprint, I see.
Yes, your actions alone will not save the world. Using that as an excuse to do nothing is a fallacy.
TheOriginalJBones@reddit
Saint Peter’s surely seen worse sins slip through the gate.
Plus, a 172 is, comparatively, the flying version of Christ’s donkey.

Flintoli@reddit (OP)
I'm just your everyday 4k salary dude like all y'all here, this is gonna be a steep learning curve for me lol
Rude-Dentist-2493@reddit
The specs are a solid start, but let's be real, we all need to know if you're actually going to do a barrel roll in that 172. Also, a live stream of the first flight is basically mandatory for internet points at this point. Just make sure you have a co-pilot for the camera work so you don't pull a "hold my beer" moment on takeoff. Congrats on the deal, and fly safe until you've got that first landing under your belt.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya I'll fucking 1g roll it. If anyone asks what I was doing just tell em I was selling airplanes. I didn't know about the necessity of the live stream but don't worry I got y'all covered.
Don't know about a copilot but I got a pretty cool dog!
Thanks! Ive landed a few of these dang things before and so hopefully I keep my takeoff/landing at 1:1 ;)
hughk@reddit
Put him in the left seat with a headset and do a photo. If the FAA ever want to speak with you, claim it was the dog.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
This is the trick they don't want you to know! You want to land? Closest airport is private? No problem, just declare dog emergency! "Sorry bob airfield, my dog was saying he felt realllll sick"
astropy_units@reddit
I used to teach in that plane and have gone on some pretty cool flights with it. Happy flying!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
What this exact one??? Or same model
astropy_units@reddit
This exact tail number
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Dude please pm me!!! Why did the flight school go under??? Did they treat this plane right? You were out in new Jersey? Do you know the mechanic rich???
portugueseninja@reddit
When you own a plane like this are there any restrictions on where you can fly it or land it?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Great question! So all airspace over the us is categorized. Big airports are class b so you can't fly there without explicit clearance from atc, big but small airport are c so you need to at least hear your tail number before you enter.
There are also tfrs and restricted areas like the White House where you can't fly.
Otherwise 500 feet from people or structures and you are good! I can basically fly anywhere I want and if I declare an emergency land anywhere I want even a military base
portugueseninja@reddit
Oh cool! Thanks for explaining!
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
No problem! If you have any more questions about airplane regulations let me know! I love geeking out about the subject

Booouurns@reddit
Can you run through the actual process? Do you use a broker? Search Craigslist? I presume you gotta pay cash? How much does insurance cost? Do you have to buy liability insurance too?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Okay so first I found the listing on one of the airplane classified, hit up the seller. Then after I agreed to a price I hit up aopa and got a lender. Then lender made me get an inspection and wanted copies of the critical log boom pages like the rebuild. Then the inspector gave me his report and I low balled.
Then after my offer was accepted I got aerospace reports to broker it. They cost 650 split between me and seller. They then took over and made sure all the paperwork was in order and asked for what they needed and filed everything with faa. Then I wired them my down payment, lender wired the balance and it's done!
Empty-See@reddit
$300 for a prepurchase inspection seems awfully low. Did they check things like compression, timing, oil analysis, vacuum system, engine and airframe log review, etc? The black soot on and behind the cowling would worry me a lot.
I have the exact same model (1975 172M) but with a different engine upgrade, done in the late 1980s. Pierce 160hp conversion to the original O-320-E2D.
Be careful out there and best wishes to you.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Ya it's all good he did compression and a good log review. Just got the annual like a month before it stopped flying so I'm not worried

Oh that cockpit is bringing back some memories 😂! Did you learn on a 172 or is this going to be all new for you?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Learned on a 150 so pretty much the same. I'm used to av30s though so steam gauges are gonna be different. Gonna have to scan more instead of having everything in one place
spideyghetti@reddit
What that means?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
What's what mean dawg?
God_Dammit_Dave@reddit
Why did you go crazy?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
The Lord spoke to me and said, be the change you want! though shalt have a plane and doth no smoking sign welst be removeth
_entrxpy@reddit
How much do you think it'll cost you in the next year? And the years after?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Well the major expense is the overhaul which I won't need for 1.5k more hours, so annuals, maintenance, gas, oil shit like that. It will cost a lot but not as much as if I needed a 30k overhaul soon.
Role-Business@reddit
What model year is she? One that's young at heart, I reckon.
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
1975, but did you know that airplanes go the same speed that they did in 1970? ;)
iPhones_cameras_suck@reddit

Does it have an airworthiness certificate?
Flintoli@reddit (OP)
Yep, current annual, and only 500 hours on the new ram 160 engine since the overhaul in 2024
