Overall thoughts on FDR? Good? Bad?

Good in the way that the Five Good Emperors were good. He left the country stronger and more prosperous - that is not a moral endorsement of the actions took to get there. The worst: Japanese-American internment. I don’t personally think that another president at the time would have dealt with the situation differently. My stance is that the country as a whole was significantly prejudiced against non-white people at the time and it’s an abdication of collective responsibility to place the blame for this crime entirely on the president. But if someone takes a negative view on FDR because of this i can’t blame them. Bad: he ran for four terms. Conflicted: the Manhattan project. I understand the historical framing that it was a race against the Nazis to secure the first nuclear weapon. I also have read conflicting reports that cast doubt on this framing - my understanding is that although Germany had many leading researchers before the war, the regime was largely uninterested in the kind of physics that made the bomb possible. Regardless, FDR exited the stage, bequeathing Truman the world’s most powerful terror weapon with no instructions or foreknowledge of its existence. We are the only country to ever use a nuclear weapon against people, and he bears some of the responsibility for that. Good but explanation required: FDR did bring us into World War II. I also see it rejected out of hand that the U.S. could have stayed out of the war - not historical IMO. Pearl Harbor was triggered by the freezing of Japanese assets due to their actions in China. I do think it was justified and he did bring us onto the right side, but both points are much closer run things than is often presented. Excellent: FDR is the representative of the era of active government. Liberalism was at a dead end in the 1930s and he helped revitalize it.
