Say you had $40k to buy a used road trip car. What's your choice? BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes, Charger, Audi... etc...? Something comfortable that eats the miles

The cabin size is considered badly small, it isn’t comfortable for long highway travel.
durrtyurr@reddit
I recommend these things to my sales reps all the time. The CPO warranty is unlimited miles for two years, Lexus dealers all have loaner cars (never without a car for work), they're incredibly comfortable, and they get outstanding fuel economy. There is basically no better car for a sales rep than a CPO ES hybrid.
armchairracer@reddit
Yep, road trips are when I just want a couch on wheels with good sound insulation. A Lexus sedan of some sort perfectly fits the bill.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
I just bought one, and I can confirm it's extremely comfortable. Although, I could see the ES being even more comfortable.
Always_Curious_One2@reddit
Please avoid Mercedes. Their quality has greatly declined.
And their service too. Terrible.

Yeah a got a bad taste from my BMW, but I hate to rule out the Germans.
moebiusgrip@reddit
Lexus LS all day every day.
Power, good handling, exceptional ride and comfort , and everything will work. Even a 20 year old LS with 200k (wich won’t be $40,000) if it had its oil changed… will be bullet proof.

BMW 740i
That money gets you well equipped 4-5 year old one. It will not be the latest generation but that’s not a bad thing.
The car will be based on a model that dates back to 2015 which was in my opinion peak BMW. It will have the iconic B58 6 cylinder with 335hp and smooth 8 speed transmission. It will be more reliable than the V8 models.

That's a good looking car.

2018 Lincoln continental, I miss mine but it was a filler for when I was waiting for my current car to be built off backorder. Nice leather interior and floaty suspension, the last gasp of the American land yacht.

Tesla model S. All other responses are wrong and they should be ashamed of themselves.
SprackenZieEnglish@reddit
Current gen Camry XLE. Has all the current driver assist tech, comfortable, reliable, and excellent gas mileage.
gautamb0@reddit
I’m very biased but look at the bmw 540i.
thespiceraja@reddit
The g30 is an amazing highway cruiser. Stay away from the PHEV.
MCBarlan@reddit
Also biased, also recommend the 540i

V6 Avalon
HillarysFloppyChode@reddit
Audi did a TDi A8L, so that. IIRC they had an insane amount of range, like 1000 miles on the highway, with massaging seats.
bikedork5000@reddit
Late model Audi S6. You can get a nice 2021-2023 one for that much money. Or an A8 L if you want an even more spacious one with a plusher overall vibe.
collierar@reddit (OP)
I do like Audis. Never owned one. I know maintenance is kinda expensive though. Whatever car I get won't be a daily.
HillarysFloppyChode@reddit
Get it with an extended warranty and maintenance isn’t as wild as people claim, as long as you avoid the dealer, unless it’s under warranty.

gs350 for 40k easy. drove one atlanta to denver and it ate those miles like nothing

540i or Lexus es/ls
the_fools_brood@reddit
Stay away from Germans. Parts cost and complex/weird modules and transmissions suck to repair. Stick with the Lexus, Camry, Accord, even the Avalon. Buy the best one you can. Caddy has some nice ones also. The touring models in particular.
LocalLuck2083@reddit
Avalon or Toyotas update of the Avalon too. The Crown sedan or Crown Signia crossover
rather_be_redditing@reddit
Something with great lane centering and adaptive cruise control or self drive options.

Volvo makes some of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve ever driven. I easily drive 1000+ miles a day in my S80V8.

Was sad when these left the rental fleets. Excellent highway couches.
8BallsAndBaseballs@reddit
Gonna come out of left field with this one, but back in '09 I drove my G8 GT from Rochester NY to just north of West Palm Beach FL straight through in 19 hours flat, and it was flat out 100% enjoyable from every aspect of comfort to performance. It felt like it wanted to do 80 at minimum and just eat up the road like it was nothing. So I'm gonna throw in the Chevy SS in the ring since it's the same platform.

Oldsmobile Cutlass
Bigdongergigachad@reddit
For a road trip you want comfy, not sporty. So ignore the RS and M suggestions, way too stiff. You want something like a 535d, 740i, a8l or s class.
collierar@reddit (OP)
Good info. It won't be a daily, so I won't be putting a ton of miles on it.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Could simply be the angle of your seat bottom that's causing you discomfort. You have adjustably both in the front and rear part of the seat bottom, right?
YozaSkywalker@reddit
540i is badass. Amazing engine and chassis tuning for highway cruising
NightwingMillenial@reddit
A 2022-2024 Audi A5 Sportback. You can get them for closer to $30k, leaving a nice chunk of change in your pocket. The EA888 2.0T with the mild hybrid system is super reliable, gets great highway MPG, and is easily tuned. For a road trip, it checks all the boxes: comfortable ride, Quattro AWD, a massive hatchback trunk, and great tech that actually still uses physical buttons for the AC and heated seats instead of burying them in a screen. Hard to beat.
Toyota_by_day@reddit
740i all day.

I did have a 99 3 series that I liked. Except the transmission went out at 100k. Nice car though.

So much torque, the chassis twisted coming off the line.

I’m in a 6 series right now but 40 grand I’d get an A8L or S8 all day long. If it’s one thing Audi can do better than any other car it’s highway miles.
1Steelghost1@reddit
Any non turbo Audi but if you can find a 's series' they are great.
