i mostly want the pc for upgradability

Desktops are best if you don't need to move around. If your laptop is living >99% of it's life just sitting at your desk, then yeah, start looking into replacing it.
Desktop CPUs and GPUs are also more powerful than their laptop "equivalents".

Personally I wouldn't want to move my desktop setup more than 2-3 times per year. I'd stick with the laptop if you travel several times per month.
Maybe add a docking station setup at your primary home, with desktop peripherals and a cooling pad for the laptop. That'll get you most of the ergonomic benefits of the desktop while maintaining the portability of the laptop.
