Honest answer? Because the vast majority of drivers live paycheck to paycheck and they know they can get away with it.

You can run 8 days on paper. Make a note that the elog isn't functioning on the pretrip. I ripped my own windshield curtains out and threw them in a ditch. Then I rolled the center curtain down and cut the bottom half off so you can't see in the windows and see the bed but air flows and I can see if it's daylight or what's going on up there without opening it.

Just idle it up to 800-1000 and relax. Shut it off if you aren't using power, but anything beyond a phone plugged in and I leave it running. Even to listen to the built in stereo, I'm not risking falling asleep and 12 hours goes by and the batteries die. Burning 60 litres over night is nothing compared to th 900+ I burn in a day driving. If we can't afford the 60 at night then just take the fuel card away and tell me it's over

Walk back out the door you came in. I was in a similar situation. Dont waste your time. There's better jobs out there with better equipment.

Can you idle it? No APU costs the company money, not you. Does the truck have a curtain separating the sleeper from the cab, if not, yoink the bunk mattress and use it as a temporary fix. Many trucks dont have the windshield/side window curtains, especially KW and PB, I think its a option, because I have had a few trucks that never had them. The ELD is a big issue, that needs to be fixed straight away, because DOT /Scale sees you running paper and they will probably get out the microscope.
