Muskets like those from 1776 are mostly exempt from today’s gun laws

Thought everyone might get a kick out of this article from the AP. Further evidence that the people most interested in restricting your rights are the least knowledgeable about the subject.
>With 165 grains of black powder in the barrel, a .75-caliber Brown Bess flintlock musket like the ones the redcoats carried in 1776 can hurl a lead ball at a velocity of around 1,000 feet (305 meters) per second. Imagine what that can do to a human body. Now, imagine that it’s almost completely exempt from gun regulations.

It's hilarious how Democrats hate winning elections.
CasCrus4L@reddit
This is the thing that fucking KILLS me, this is legit the worst time for dems to try to take guns away. How can you legit call your protests "no kings" without thinking about how we got rid of the last one.
Fit-Paper-797@reddit
Because it's all a big larp, these people are not freedom fighters nor do they believe in the constitution or gun rights.
Teboski78@reddit
Considering black powder is nearly as fine as charcoal dust. 175 grains of it wouldnt get a 175 grain lead ball to even budge
sheafflestout@reddit
Here's a nice musket from American Gun Craft - No FFL required - California legal

cheese4432@reddit
that wasn't on my bingo card for something that exists
sheafflestout@reddit
It also makes a great foregrip accessory for your AR or AK rifle. With 00 buckshot it's just right for downing those pesky drones

Actually sick as hell. I don't want one, but it's hilarious
what-name-is-it@reddit
The last well documented murder with a black powder weapon was almost 10 years ago. I have faith in the operation and loading of them being more of a deterrent than any law could provide.
weirdbutinagoodway@reddit
Anti-gun people don't care, they'll try to ban them just because you like them.
caterham09@reddit (OP)
A musket is little more than a pipe anyway.
SJ1392@reddit
They almost passed a law in CO, to require all pipes to have serial numbers and background checks... It will probably happen next legislation session...
1610925286@reddit
Okay, go build one then in a place like Illinois then that will turn you in a felon and prohibited person for life in return for doing so (yes, even if you have the firearms owner identification card).
tbrand009@reddit
That's his point. Ban him from owning guns, deny his FOID, and lable him a felon.
It doesn't matter, he can still go to Home Depot and buy a pipe.
Gunsensual@reddit
They have a soft spot for anything that looks like a grandpa gun. Grandpa wouldn't hurt anyone, he should get to keep his. Put a tactical stock on that musket and paint the furniture black? Scary assault weapon. M1 Garand blooded in WWII? No one cares.
weirdbutinagoodway@reddit
My universities mascot carries a functional muzzleloader and people have complained about it. No one listened, but there were complaints.
Impossible_Agent2022@reddit
Go Mountaineers ?
weirdbutinagoodway@reddit
Yes
caterham09@reddit (OP)
Imagine being upset about the mere depiction of a firearm
weirdbutinagoodway@reddit
No it's real, one of our mascots used it for bear hunting.
cheese4432@reddit
awesome!
1610925286@reddit
You haven't been paying attention to any of the last 50 assault weapons ban laws then. Illinois banned everything, even any 99% of the mini 14 skus.
Gunsensual@reddit
People tell me Illinois exists, and I believe them, but I don't want to.
1610925286@reddit
Me neither and I live there
Price-x-Field@reddit
They are coming for the knives and forks after this, and then after that they will be coming for the right to go outside. They are already trying to make it illegal to travel with no destination
XevinsOfCheese@reddit
NGL traveling with no destination is a bit annoying for whoever is stuck behind them in traffic.
Literal most annoying things is having a green light but the care in front of me can’t decide if they want to turn or not.
Not that it should be illegal, the only harm it causes is making me me late for work. heck I can’t even tell if that’s the reason but I can’t understand why anyone that knows where they are going would be so indecisive.
cannabisLab1975@reddit
Why they always pissing on the party?
DrunkenArmadillo@reddit
I mean, if you train like a soldier and use paper cartridges, you can get off like three shots per minute! You aren't really aiming at that rate of fire, more like pointing in the general direction of the enemy and firing. And you've probably dropped to much powder in the pan (no time to pick the vent hole, so more powder ensures more reliable ignition, right?) So it's probably a good idea to l Turn your head away when you fire, or at least close you eyes. Honestly, this could be a real problem if rival gangs ever decide to line up in formation across from each other and start shooting off muskets.
what-name-is-it@reddit
It would be like a modern day American Revolution battle. Only instead of British in red coats, it would be Bloods and Crips in blue.
Stryker218@reddit
Still banned in NYC, no constitution here
Teboski78@reddit
Considering black powder is nearly as fine as charcoal dust. 175 grains of it wouldnt get a 175 grain lead ball to even budge
WoodEyeLie2U@reddit
Grain is a unit of measurement in this case. 7000 grains equal 1 lb IIRC.
Teboski78@reddit
An. I goofed up then. I’ve only ever heard it used to measure lead
Paradox0111@reddit
Wait till they figure out a colt army or navy can be bought as easy as a BB gun in most states and we can own swords without a background check..
SashaKemper@reddit
I should get a sword
cheese4432@reddit
get ~~2~~ 12!
Paradox0111@reddit
Yes, yes, you should.. After all, it’s faster to switch to your type 97 then reloading your primary.
Severe-Cow-8646@reddit
Just think, they used to say the 2nd only applied to muskets, now they want them too
landonburner@reddit
They don't even realize the people that wrote the second amendment already had semi auto rifles. They had been out for decades but they were expensive. The reason they used muskets is because that was what they could afford.
Teboski78@reddit
Idk of “semi-auto” is technically true since that requires discharge induced cycling but they had many firearms that could fire in rapid succession & pepper box weapons were effectively indistinguishable from semi auto in terms of cadence & ease of fire.
Ok-Substance-6034@reddit
Copying my comment from another sub on this exact article.
I will say it slow for the people who keep voting for the major establishment in this state.
They. Don't. Want. You. Armed.
They don't want you to be able to sustain yourself through hunting, they don't want you to be able to defend yourself, and they certainly don't want you to have anything that will allow you to resist control.
Pappa_Crim@reddit
I think its more they are cowards that quiver at the slightest notion of violence. I got to imagine that for every machiavelian rubbing his palms their has to be 10 pearl clutchers that see helplessness as a vitrtue. I have at least three family members that seem to think they are to smart and sophisticated for even so much as a 4 in pocket knife
XevinsOfCheese@reddit
The Machiavellian is happy to manipulate the pearl clutchers.
Though tbh I doubt they need to do much, at most just point them at new targets.
winston_smith1977@reddit
The 6000 years of recorded history are the endlessly repetitive story of elites striving to disarm commoners, because unarmed peasants are easier to rob, rape, murder and enslave.
Snowbold@reddit
Fine, AP, I’ll get a musket since you are so insistent on it…!
Any-Can-6776@reddit
Muzzleloaders *. Or rather black powder
yeah_yeah-whatever@reddit
“We’re not coming for your guns we just want to ban assault weapons “
2026 “here’s why flintlock rifles must be regulated and controlled “
Measurex2@reddit
Do you think they took the copy pasta seriously?
Just as the founding fathers intended
Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended
Big-Doughnut8307@reddit
People gonna think musket wielding ATF agents came through if the dog gets shot.
cowboy3gunisfun@reddit
I love these hypothetical statements. Imagine how bad it could have been, now imagine we told you that information, since we couldn't actually find some real info, just use your imagination.
RationalTidbits@reddit
Based on “military use”, not to mention caliber, not to mention that the *presence* of guns somehow generates imminent harm, unless in the hands of the government, gun control would eventually get to muskets.
