What's the dumbest car you'd buy tomorrow if someone handed you $50k cash?
Posted by LeadershipOld1857@reddit | Autos | View on Reddit | 253 comments
Someone at work asked me this a few days ago and it stuck with me.
What does "dumb" even mean here? Slow? Ugly? Wrong for you? All of the above?
Mine would be a Toyota Sienna. I have one girl. I live on tight streets with zero parking. It drives like nothing. Nothing in the car talks to anything else. It's boring. Makes absolutely no sense for my life. I'd take it tomorrow.
What's yours?

Any Maserati

CarelessTravel8@reddit
You not getting any Aston for $50k. Sorry

Just enough money to buy a GranSport for $20k and own it for exactly two years.

You'll need the other 30k for "maintenance".

981 boxster s. Impractical, no where to store it. I’d drive the piss out of it, probably daily it for most of the year
bamahoon@reddit
They have two trunks, they aren’t that impractical for what they are.
Agent_Giraffe@reddit
For what they are sure, but they’re still impractical. They can’t carry more than 2 people, can’t really carry golf clubs unless you stick them in the passenger footwell, can’t store any large objects that you can in a hatch or suv, low ride height (not good in winter with decent snowfall), expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, expensive to mod.
But they’re fun and look great, I’d like to own one at some point.
cactusjackalope@reddit
They’re actually amazingly practical. That frunk will hold a full size suitcase, with the trunk leftover. I had a Cayman as my only car for years, and only rented a truck when I had to take my motorcycle to track days.
Agent_Giraffe@reddit
Well I mean in the sense it only has two seats and idk where to put my golf clubs
LeadershipOld1857@reddit (OP)
Cant agree with that. Amazing cars in my opinion.
Ran4@reddit
Drive one. Zero steering feel, liftoff oversteer deluxe, impossibly tall gears making it super boring on the streets.
As a precious owner - they're insanely overrated.
LeadershipOld1857@reddit (OP)
Zero steering feel hurts my feelings. On a Porsche? That's nuts.
Western_Big5926@reddit

6M G8 GXP. I had "only" a GT years ago and wanted one. I've had a couple Chevy SS sedans in 6M since, but the G8 imo looked great, and felt more "raw".
ausremi@reddit
I had to google as I recognised the G8. You know the history of these right? I grew up a 20 minute drive from the Holden Factory in Adelaide, Australia that made them. Sadly it got caught up in global consolidation and executive decisions. The base chassis Commodore was the most highly sold family car for years in Australia through the 90s and 00s.
The Pontiac G8 GXP was essentially a rebadged and mildly restyled version of the Australian-made Holden Commodore SS V but mechanically upgraded to match the flagship HSV Clubsport R8.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden
russsl8@reddit
Of course I know that the G8 was a VE Commodore and the 2015 Chevy SS I had was a VF 1 Commodore and the 2016 SS was a VF 2 Commodore! 😁
You Aussies sure knew how to build a great large RWD sedan and it's much too bad that GM did what they Did to Holden and Ford Australia.

Ferrari 355 or 360. Could probably find a beat on one for $50k and it'll cost that much in a few years keeping it running. But the sound, the drama, the go kart driving experience would be wonderful. I suspect that's along the lines of "dumb" your coworker was thinking. A Sienna is highly practical, fuel efficient and useful, maybe large for your area but theres much dumber purchases out there.
Currently daily a Chrysler Pacifica with 2 kids and 2 dogs, it's a tool perfectly fit for purpose but I do miss the modified sports cars of my youth.

Either that, or buy a used low mileage 96-00 OBS Tahoe (2 door, and ideally the '00 Limited with 2WD in good condition.. pull the motor and trans (keep them so I would have the OEM for the vehicle, value retain) and swap in a 572 Big Block with a 4L80E -- both fully built, possibly supercharger/blower sticking out of the 2-4" cowl hood or just N/A and some spray on occasion. Would be lowered 2/4" drop, or maybe even on airbags, big brake kit, modernized interior (to an extent) -- all blacked out.
