WMO: Likelihood increases of El Niño
Posted by TheRedditPremium@reddit | PrepperIntel | View on Reddit | 38 comments
A "super" El Niño is now the most likely scenario from October 2026 to February 2027, according to a new forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.
El Niño is the warmer phase of the natural El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate cycle, a periodic shift in the waters of the tropical Pacific Ocean that supercharges global temperatures, in turn impacting weather patterns and crops worldwide.
Now, in a new ENSO forecast published May 14, NOAA estimates that there's a 65% chance that the upcoming El Niño will be classified as strong or very strong starting in October, potentially placing it among the strongest in recorded history.

Ebola, Hanta, El Niño… we can’t fucking miss can we? Thanks Trump! 🖕
dittybopper_05H@reddit
Of those 4 things, Trump is only responsible for 1, so you're 75% wrong.
V1ld0r_@reddit
He could and does have quite a big responsibility in the Ebola one.
The 2014 outbreak had a massive support and prevention by the US administration. This comment highlight very well what has changed since: https://www.reddit.com/r/ContagionCuriosity/comments/1tfbc45/comment/oml7xkz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

you forgot political instability and possible extremist attacks (ppl in other countries are getting angry at trump for effing up their economy and supplies) and food/fuel shortages
dittybopper_05H@reddit
Umm, I seem to remember extremist attacks when Trump *WASN'T* president. And plenty of them.

Serious-Ad2573@reddit
well get ready of plenty more
TwinIronBlood@reddit
Add Gaza and Lebanon and all the terrorist it will inspire to the mix and the next 10 to 15 years are going to be difficult.
Eric_Durden@reddit
What's that mean for west Michigan winters?
V1ld0r_@reddit
Colder and wetter (snowier, more precipitation).
Anything closer to the Atlantic will be colder and wetter than usual. Western and Southern Europe will be somewhat miserable and in contrast to typical winters (already feeling it as much colder and greyer than usual). Places that usually don't get snow will.
hereforthelaughs69@reddit
Should mean a wet winter…right?
No_Branch_5083@reddit
I keep expecting this to fizzle out as these predictions usually do, but it increasingly looks like 2027 is going to be the big one.
blackcatwizard@reddit
It is going to be bad. Couple this with severe draught, massive fertilizer shortages, fuel shortages, oil shortages, medical supply shortages (huge petroleum derivate), increasing bankruptcies, food shortages, etc, etc, etc, and beginning mid-summer shit is going to get bad.
pile_of_fish@reddit
Yeah. I dont think that the us will be directly hit with famine, but I think that more fragile regions will, and that is always a recipe for unrest and misery.
blackcatwizard@reddit
It will, eventually. They are currently facing massive crop loss due to draught (this year, right now) and fertilizer shortage. Lake Mead and Lake Powell are both at critical levels - there was practically no snow on the west coast this winter. The aquifers on the west coast are going to become a problem. And when it does rain it dumps, which is mostly - if not entirely - useless for crops. Farmers in the Midwest aren't even starting their crops this year due to all of the above. And there's more. Famine will eventually hit everyone when everything has become so destabilized from how bad the weather is getting and will continue to get.

I'm still a bit sceptical but it's starting to look like shits about to go down and I mean like really down, the world is already in such an unstable place, with this now on top it, it could really ignite the powder keg, but I suppose let's hope for the best.

Hormuz-inflation x super el nino = May we live in interesting times
fragrant-final-973@reddit
How many interesting times are we supposed to see in a decade? They just keep coming.

Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'
SackFullaGrapes@reddit
And they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ and they don’t stop comin’

Well I don’t know if you believe in astrology. I’m not an expert but I like to read it. And this is that they’ve all been saying. Whatever planets align here in 2027 are going to not be fun for us.

look at 2015. 2026 is def a el nino. question is how much.
while global oceans hover around record 21C.

People, for fuck's sake, stock up on essentials NOW if you need to. Don't wait until the end of the year. Prices are already rising, and they're only going to get worse.
Forrest-Fern@reddit
What extras are you stocking up on? About to hit Costco and could use some inspo 😭
ParallelPlayArts@reddit
Get what you use that is shelf stable and any disposable products like toilet paper...don't go crazy, other people need things too.
If you have freezer space and eat meat you can do that too.
itsavibe-@reddit
A deep freezer would be nice right about now
ParallelPlayArts@reddit
They are. I got one last year. My only regret is not getting a larger one.
karl4319@reddit
Shelves stable food for the pantry (beans, rice, flour, canned goods), lots of frozen things for a chest freezer (meat, berries, greens, etc), any cleaning or other essential that have paper or plastic in them.
Think prepping for covid again, except you are stuck at home away from a store for 3 to 6 months.
Also, if you have been putting off oil changes, new tires, engine work, or buying any sort of electronic, do it now. Things are about to get very expensive or simply won't be in stock for at least a year. Maybe longer.
TheIrishWanderer@reddit
If you're planning to bug-in, you should stock up on essentials. Long-lasting food, water storage, any meds you're short on, etc. But because this is an unprecedented issue, I'd strongly recommend searching up what effects your specific area is vulnerable to, such as flooding or drought, and then take precautions to help mitigate the impact. Honestly, there are better lists in this sub and elsewhere online than I can think of off the top of my head.
If nothing happens, great. Rotate your supplies. If SHTF, you'll be prepared. Win-win.
Altruistic-Soil-810@reddit
With all these viruses going around and almost seemingly ready to create another pandemic of some sort (just speculation), I would honestly stock up on cleaning supplies, bleach or disinfectant, and even potentially giant tarps/plastic liners for quarantine. Any medications you might need, both OTC and prescription, and of course long-term pantry staples. Wheat is going to become scarce in 2027, so if you use it I would stock up, along with rice, beans, and cooking oils/tallow. Water is always a good one, but I'd recommend larger storage containers (like 5 gallon jugs or 55 gallon drums), but bottled water if that's all you have the space for.
