Grandpa's war trophy.

Grandpa shipped this Type 56 back from Vietnam. First time its been assembled since. It was and absolute RUST BUCKET. CLP, stiff nylon brush, and elbow grease got most of it off.
Any suggestions on how to get the rest of it off without affecting the original bluing? I want to get it cleaned up as possible and suprise him with it on the 4th.

That is about the mintest bring back from Vietnam I have seen. They are usrally way worse off, especially the stocks.

Why? Most weren't fired and only dropped once... or so I'm told...

Yeah I’m impressed.

That ol’ jungle warp
Leroy1864@reddit
Is that the worst of it in the second pic?
If so then just leave it, it looks great for its age and the story behind it.

Yeah, by far the worst. I had that thought, too. It looks pretty good. Just wanted to do the best I can for him.

It’s probably best to quit while you’re ahead, you wouldn’t want to start going to town on it and mess up the blue.

Heard that! Like I said, I was reluctant to even want to take it past the ole nylon brush. Its a cool peice. /26\, Matching serials, obviously no import stamps, full cleaning kit, pristine bore. Thanks again for the advice!

A brass brush and oil will work too. It is more aggressive than a nylon brush but not enough to damage blueing. Just pass a magnet over the bristles to make sure they are solid brass and not just brass coated.

Also, post this to r/sks they’d love to hear the story.

I will!

Move on from nylon to brass or copper scrubbers

I'm so bad at these kinds of guns... I always thinking, "oh shit, is that an SKS?" No, again, it's not an SKS.

I'd break the rifle down then soak it for a day or so in penetrating oil. 50/50 acetone and ATF fluid then scrub with a white 3m Scotch Brite pad or brass wool.
TurboEncabulator_1@reddit
It looks really good to me. I wouldn't do anything else to it other than oiling it and enjoying it.
If you really want to do more, you want to get some #0000 steel wool and gently scrub the rust spots with your CLP.
DeFiClark@reddit
Don’t use CLP, use 3in1. Much gentler on bluing for rust removal.
