I wonder what the tng movie atmosphere would look like if they kept the season 1 uniforms for the entire show and the movies

I'd split the difference. Keep the Generations mix of the black jumpsuits and colorful jackets. It really worked aesthetically and would have been cheaper.

hi! i DMd you :) and i would be indefinitely thankful for a reply
AlanShore60607@reddit
I’m not seeing it
_iambeyoncealways@reddit
ugh WHAT. could you try chatting me first?
AlanShore60607@reddit
Oh, is about Bankruptcy… I do not accept private messages about legal matters, and mentioning it in a Star Trek post about costumes is off topic.
_iambeyoncealways@reddit
oh sorry :// you're just really active and helpful in that community so i thought you would be open to a DM too. and i only mentioned it here because my chats evidently weren't going through
TheOneWhoRocks@reddit
I'm not joking when I say the uniform changes to something more comfortable contributed to TNG's enduring success. The show would not have followed the same trajectory if they hadn't ditched the stinky lycra.
fluentinflatuence@reddit
Along this line of reasoning, I think Patrick would have quit.
mattd1972@reddit
Apparently they hurt most peoples’ backs.
Johnsendall@reddit
Didn’t Frakes admit that his own personal back problems were used by the other actors who also complained of back pain because they all hated the uniform. They didn’t really have back pain but went with it to get it to change.
ValosAtredum@reddit
The women had to stay in jumpsuits, though, didn’t they? Only men got the two piece
Bloody_meridian88@reddit
I think so too. I recall hearing somewhere that his doctor advised against wearing the uniform, presumably due to the back problems.
multificionado@reddit
Yep, and then TNG would've died after Season 2.
bannock4ever@reddit
It's really the whole aesthetic (the uniforms, the lighting, the bridge) of season 3 to 7 is why am not very fond of the movies or even the other shows. I know DS9 is widely praised and I like it but the dank-metal space station and the dark lighting is not comfy like TNG. It's probably why I rewatch Voyager over DS9. I probably watch The Orville and Lower Decks more than DS9 and Voyager.
factoid_@reddit
Different strokes. I’ve rewatched ds9 probably 4 times all the way through over the years.
I’ve rewatched voyager all the way through precisely never
Steely-Dave@reddit
Picard debuting the ‘duty jacket’ seemed to send the show forward 100 years. You are absolutely right.
Slartibartfast39@reddit
Do they ever mention uniform changes? I don't know if it would have worked for TNG. I can picture Tuck in Enterprise saying hes glad they got rid of the old uniform. It's in his character. Not sure about anyone in TNG
scooped88@reddit
I don’t think they mention it but do acknowledge the changes. In All Good Things they wear the S1 uniforms for the “past” scenes. Also Bashir wears one of the old DS9 uniforms to show how long he’s been abducted.
AlanShore60607@reddit
Which was actually wrong, unless his changeling replacement performed brain surgery on Sisko.

SKANTS IN PARADISE
AlanShore60607@reddit
If that’s your thing, pop over to r/aistartrek and you’ll see everyone in a skant.
Everyone.
SirStocksAlott@reddit
You get a skant, and YOU get a skant!
owlpellet@reddit
quark gets the skant! worf gets the skant! deleted scene babes get a skant which, yeah, let's do that
owlpellet@reddit
Troi, drunk in the post-apocolypse bar, is wearing an inexplicable silver shimmering ballgown. Riker is wearing a regulation skant.
owlpellet@reddit
Troi, freshly promoted to full commander, and four years since her bridge officer certification, pilots the 1701D saucer section to a high speed terrain landing. She is wearing a prom dress.
MikeyB_0101@reddit
Awful
ConstitutionsGuard@reddit
Patrick Stewart was going to sue if they didn’t change. The tight pant stirrups that gave it the wrinkle free appearance were giving him back problems.
Meatloafxx@reddit
It was Sir Pat's chiropractor vouching that those early uniforms would cause long term damage if continuously worn.
Vfrnut@reddit
They would have quit well before then . They HATED those uniforms.
Aezetyr@reddit
The design I'd be okay with. The fabric they were made of was so shitty that it contributed to at least Sir Patrick's back problems, and probably didn't help Frakes at all with his.
I honestly really like the TNG films / later DS9 uniforms. They look a hell of a lot more professional and comfortable.
InTheChairAgain@reddit
I don't particularly like later DS9 uniforms. It's not question of their design, professionalism or comfort though, more just about colors. Star Trek up until then always had a very visible color scheme, working well with the usally light backgrounds, helping the representation of the bright future that Star Trek tried to present. DS9 taking place against a darker background, had already move more towards black, but did keep colored shoulder patches. When they all went over to just grey, leaving only necks colored, I didn't particlarly like that. Not sure why they did it? If maybe they felt as the show developed to a kind of War story, it would need more grey? Never made much sense. Not like they used them for camouflage anyway. Voyager I think did the right thing sticking with the colored shoulder pads. So wasn't thrilled with either of the TNG movies choices of uniforms. Not even Generations which did a weird mix of DS9 and TNG uniforms, and had awful lighting. I would have been much nicer I think if for the TNG movies they hade gone with some kind of development of the jacket that Picard wore in early TNG Season 5, but in three or four colors, Red, Blue, Gold, and perhaps one more if they want to separate Sciences and Medical.
Johnsendall@reddit
Ds9 era uniforms kicked. I disagree.
kiggitykbomb@reddit
They would have trouble saying their lines because by seasons 5-7 everybody would be working too hard to suck in their belly.
Rexxbravo@reddit
Suck in the guts guys we are Starfleet.
Account_Haver420@reddit
That would have been cool actually but I also like the later season uniforms a lot. DS9 style are nice too, not quite as iconic imo and I do wish the TNG films had stuck with the more colorful series look
SportTop2610@reddit
The onesies on men.
Constant-Box-7898@reddit
🤣 That's like wondering what Load and Reload would sound like in the production/sound design style of Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning.
MovieFan1984@reddit
What?
MovieFan1984@reddit
Black hides the fat. You don't see it in Nemesis. You do see it in PIC S3. haha
honeybakedham1@reddit
I really disliked this style uniform. Too grey. Wish they stuck with the ds9 uniforms. They had just the right amount of color
ZeldaZonk16@reddit
I don’t like the gray uniforms, either. My favorite uniforms out of all the Trek shows are the seasons 3-7 TNG ones.
Hoju3942@reddit
They all look like they're on a weight loss journey and are excitedly buying new clothes, but they still need another 10 pounds before they fit right. Don't worry Commander Riker's shoulders, I believe in you. You got this.
Barrettshard@reddit
I wish they had. Always seemed silly to me how much they changed the uniforms
kaaskugg@reddit
Let's just say that the S1/S2 spandex suits aren't exactly forgiving when it comes to hiding excess weight. Actors do age and some of them would look rather odd in their seventh year wearing those things.
bannock4ever@reddit
Denise Crosby was the only one that looked good in those uniforms!
Used-Gas-6525@reddit
The S1 ones looked like I sewed them. Once they got that ironed out (no zipper at the front etc), they should have kept them for the entire run. They had to go with the flow one they changed em up for DS9 though.
Also, action figures/toys. The more outfits, the more dolls of the same character you can sell.
