ULPT Request - How to conceal severe rust on a bar stool ?
Posted by Firestar_@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 11 comments
Long story short - sink was leaking while I was away for a week. I am moving out soon. Noticed that the bar stool which is nearby had caught on some of that water and rusted badly. (In addition - living in an extremely high humidity place).
The rust seems to have corroded away some of the metal. How would i be able to hide or fix it ?

How soon are you moving? If you haven't paid your last rent, deduct the expected refund from your last payment. Never expect to get your refund actually returned.

Hey you could just wrap it in aluminum hvac tape, no? The kind used for sealing air ducts. https://a.co/d/05WMFAKw
I know you said there’s no amazon where you live but maybe you can find it at a hardware store?

Why do you need a ULPT? Just throw away the stool if the rust bothers you that much.

- Renting
- Wanting my deposit back
- Knowing my landlord is an asshole who stole 400€ from me + other tenants

Fair enough. I didn’t see where you said it was a rental. You’re renting a stool? Or you’re renting a house and your landlord’s stool is there? I’ve never seen a rental that comes with furniture. Good luck tho sorry.

Order the same one from Amazon. Keep the new one and put the rusted one in the box and return it.

Amazon doesn't deliver where I live.

Use this chemical, plus a little water, to remove all rust from the barstool. A wire brush or steel wool helps too, but honestly even a regular dish sponge will be just fine. The chemical does most of the work, you just have to use enough on each area of rust and make sure it saturates in.
Reassess after the rust is all gone. Are there holes in it? I have not had to restore an item in that condition before, but a quick google says you can use “Bondo” or a metal epoxy to fill in pitting. It also recommends sanding for smoothness.

Try this if we are talking chrome legs:
Take a large piece of aluminum foil and ball it up loosely. Rub the legs to remove any rust then take a new piece of foil and rub again till shiny.
It may work, it may not depending on how well it was chromed in the first place.
Good luck!

alternate method for chrome is steel wool and WD-40. This is what I've used for rusty chrome bike parts.

rust needs to be cleaned completely. you can do it with a wire brush. if you paint over it, it will continue rusting.
