28/50 Unrelenting Sabers positivity. New York is our new state for unrelenting positive posting.

This is our newest unrelenting positivity post.
The state in question is the great state of New York.
To all our foreign friends give a shout ask questions send praise. To our Americans do the same.
Ask questions, share stories, make jokes. Just remember not to be a jerk.
Recall the famous phrase my grandma invented “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything that isn’t redemptively funny.”
Stay tuned for 29/50 after this one.
The states are in random order based on my whim at the moment. Today’s whim is any state that can trash on the Bruins is a friend of mine.
ChocolatePain@reddit
As someone from NYC, I feel bad that the rest of the state is so overshadowed. There's a lot of wonderfully quaint towns and amazing nature across the state.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I'm from the Finger Lakes region. People from other parts of the US and other parts of the world don't seem to realize that NY is a beautiful state, with tons of nature. It's not all Manhattan.
And GO SABRES!
TopperMadeline@reddit
Yeah, there are a lot of farms in upper NY State.
Dazzling-Low8570@reddit
Little else, really, as far as the human development goes.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
NY is the #5 dairy producer in the country, basically the equivalent to Texas and Idaho, after California and Wisconsin.
Great cheeses in NY.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
And mountains and lakes and forests.
Roam1985@reddit
Okay.
But now say something nice about Manhattan.
Cause the point of the thread.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Man folks downvoting you. Thats some solid bullshit for an unrelenting positivity thread.
Manhattan is the best place I have briefly lived and have no desire to live in ever again. It is amazing. It is wonderful. Even the subway funk smell under Chinatown makes me nostalgic for my time there.
World class museums (except fuck the Guggenheim which is the worst art museum in the country) but all others are amazing.
Just the insane lore from music, movies, books, actually being there is incredible.
I brook no trashing of NYC generally. I encourage trashing of NYC in particulars but only because there will be a few million people that will disagree with whatever take you have and maybe you learn something.
Arleare13@reddit
God, I could not agree more. Every few years I'm like "maybe it's time I give the Guggenheim another chance." And every time I'm disappointed.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Same. I go and someone will say “ooooh let’s go to the Guggenheim you like art museums.” I say nothing and just internally think “maybe this time it won’t be so bad.”
It is always worse.
It isn’t even their collection. Or it is the fact that they have an amazing collection. Then they just decided to put it in what I can only assume is a building designed after binge watching every near future dystopian piece of media ever.
When I read Wool and saw the series I just couldn’t stop thinking “if there was priceless art on all the walls this Silo would be the Guggenheim.”
Arleare13@reddit
I think they should just turn the big spiral helix ramp into a water slide and be done with it.
Curmudgy@reddit
The spiral at the New England Aquarium is much worse. At least the Guggenheim feels spacious instead of mobbed.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
The aquarium feels less like a prison even though it is an animal prison.
Roam1985@reddit
....That sounds fun.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I didn't say anything negative about Manhattan. I pointed out that there is more to NYS, which many people don't realize. Even people in other parts of the US don't know that it's a huge state, full of natural beauty.
Source: am from NYS, moved to another region. Have to constantly explain that I'm not from NYC.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
It's not, actually. The point is the state of NY. I've only been to Manhattan once, for a day. I can't speak on it.
Roam1985@reddit
Then you really didn't need to present it as "It's not all the thing I'm viewing as lesser".
Cause.. The point of the thread.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I didn't say anything negative. I was pointing out that it is a whole beautiful state, outside of the part that most people are familiar with. You chose to get offended over that, which is fucking weird.
Roam1985@reddit
"It's a whole beautiful state, it's not all like x part" rather heavily implies x part is less than beautiful.
It's not like we haven't heard this type of thing before.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
You chose to read my words in a way that I didn't write them. You chose to become offended over my pointing out that the state is full of natural beauty. I didn't say anything negative and now you've hijacked my comments with your weird hurt feelings.
Your feelings are not mine to manage. Seek help. This is weird.
Roam1985@reddit
You could have just said it was a beautiful state without needing to differentiate or put part of it down. I'm sorry, and maybe the intent wasn't there.
But it was exactly what I expected to see in this thread.
So the intent may not be yours, but it definitely exists to a point it's crazy to ignore it when one sees it about their home.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I literally didn't say anything negative though. I pointed out the FACT that the state isn't just Manhattan. That's not negativity.
Are you familiar with bean soup theory?
Roam1985@reddit
Whether the implication was intentional or not, it was there.
You were asked to just come up with one nice thing to say about downstate.
You refused. That's made it so the implication seems less unintentional to me. I still can be wrong though.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I said positive things about the state. That was the point of the post. Not "say something positive about each region." My pointing out that the state is big and not just the part that the media focuses on is not negative. And also why do I have to do what you, a random butthurt Redditor, asked of me?
I'm not from Manhattan. I haven't spent time there. If you want to say something positive about it in your own comment, instead of being weird as fuck on mine, go for it. My love of the finger lakes in no way takes away from your ability to comment on NYC. Why are you so offended by my one neutral sentence?
I hope your day gets better. Weirdo.
Roam1985@reddit
For the reasons I explained.
It read more like a 'subtle insult/dog whistle' that didn't add to your positive comment except to put somewhere else down.
I could have been wrong about that.
I hope my day gets better too.
And yours, why not.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I've told you repeatedly that you're wrong. You keep choosing to take my words in a way other than at face value. That's a you problem. Now leave me alone.
Roam1985@reddit
You have told me I'm wrong.
And I've told you repeatedly: I disagree. I'm not even saying you're wrong. Just as far as I'm concerned, it seems like BS.
Anyway, have a lovely day.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
How can you "disagree" with the actual words that I wrote, which are not negative in any way? You read something into my words that I literally did not say. And I say what I mean. You need therapy.
Roam1985@reddit
Because I read an implication that still seems there. Like I've explained. We clearly disagree. Okay. We can disagree.
Anyway, have a lovely day.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
It's inaccurate to say that NYS is more than Manhattan?
Roam1985@reddit
No.
Is it inaccurate to say "NY is beautiful, it's not just Manhattan" separates Manhattan from beautiful either unintentionally or intentionally?
Probably, because if there was no intent "NY is beautiful. Western NY is gorgeous."
Hence the implication I read over the separation
You chose different words than the guy down below who said "NY is beautiful, NYC isn't". But the very similar sentence structure might be why it reads so similarly.
anyway, that's why it read like a dog whistle. So I just asked to see if you could say something nice about the part you actively refused to call beautiful.
And you actively refused to do that. Whatever. It is what it is.
Have a lovely day.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I can't be responsible for what someone else said lol. I didn't even see that comment before I made mine.
Roam1985@reddit
And you're not.
Hence you weren't told you were. You just were pointed to why the two were similar.
You'll note how I haven't insulted you specifically or implied you needed therapy once in any of my posts?
That's a neat thing to note.
Anyway, we clearly don't like to talk to each other. We clearly disagree. I'm good with that.
Have a lovely day.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Go Sabers. Boston delenda est.
Far too many people forget upstate exists and is gorgeous.
crappymedium@reddit
I’ve been up and down I-87 many times, it’s wild how much of western New York I still haven’t explored
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
Yeah I spend a week in the Ithaca area and it's a great college town. It's beautiful around Cayuga Lake.
I_Weep_for_Willow@reddit
So, I'll get this going. Where does upstate begin?
; )
Ok so I grew up in Binghamton and here's my two cents. Take the NY/PA border and keep drawing it east. Anything below the line is downstate, anything above is upstate. And don't try to convince me that western NY isn't considered upstate. Final answer.
mshaversham@reddit
It's where the Catskills begin - Sullivan County.
apgtimbough@reddit
The upstate argument is so funny. I once had an argument with someone that Syracuse is not "Upstate," it was "Central NY." Mind you, I pointed out they were attending Upstate Medical University, located in Syracuse.
The answer is it's both CNY and Upstate. Just like Binghamton is Upstate and the Southern Tier. Buffalo is WNY and Upstate.
Cuddles_McRampage@reddit
100%. When talking to someone not from NYS I say I'm from Upstate New York, when talking to someone familiar with the state I say I'm from Central New York.
PacSan300@reddit
It begins north of Central Park. /s
ArcticBeavers@reddit
Isn't there an official designation?
Downstate is NYC + Westchester + Suffolk + Nassau. Anything outside of this is upstate.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
If that’s not official that’s pretty much my personal definition anyway
PokeCaptain@reddit
Where Metro-North service stops. AKA Poughkeepsie.
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
I would imagine anything north of White Plains is upstate
crappymedium@reddit
It’s relative term imo. Someone in Albany would call the Hudson valley “downstate,” someone in Brooklyn would call it upstate
WowsrsBowsrsTrousrs@reddit
I grew up in the suburbs of NYC, and we visited the Bronx Zoo or AMNH frequently. AMNH is still my favorite museum in the country, I get up there every few years, thank you Amtrak NE Regional.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
New York's the best state. Four seasons, beautiful summers, snow...
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
Snow is not one of the selling points lol.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
Having moved away from it, I miss the snow, it makes it so that winter can be full of outdoor activities.
When you're in the climate zones 3 and 4 winter is just kind of miserable, muddy, cold, and wet.
If I'm going to endure winter, I'd rather endure a winter space that means I or my kids can enjoy the outside. Ice skating on ponds, skiing, sledding, fort making etc etc.
All without the problem of small amounts of snow simply ruining a regions ability to function (looking at you Mid Atlantic)
That being said, warm weather in March being the norm and not the exception is also pretty nice.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I've never enjoyed skiing, playing in the snow, or sledding. It's cold, wet, and miserable. It makes driving dangerous. There is nothing about it that appeals to me in the least.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
Probably because you never got to experience them in their fullest.
And driving on unplowed or unprepped roads in the snow is dangerous.
Something that NY does very well is clearing snow.
Driving the day after a snow storm in NY is mundane (clear roads etc), where as most anywhere else in the country it is days or even weeks of hazardous conditions.
LemonSkye@reddit
This unfortunately is not true everywhere in the state; some counties and municipalities are significantly better than others. Schenectady in particular has a very bad habit of doing nothing to prepare for oncoming snow, while also waiting until the storm is done to even start clearing the roads. I lived there through 2 major storms and I think both times the National Guard had to be called in to help clear everything out. There were side streets that were still impassible up to a week after the fact.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I did. I grew up there, friend. I hated every minute of all of it.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
Sucks for you. Sorry to hear that.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
Nah. I moved away, remember? Winters don't suck when there's no snow to deal with.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
No, it sucks that you had an unenjoyable childhood with snow.
I'm sorry you were unable to enjoy that thing that most kids find a way to enjoy.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
You don't have to be sorry lol. I had my books and the quiet while the other kids went and got cold and wet.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
Neat, I'm glad you're experiencing life to the fullest.
I'm sure you're outside enjoying hot summers too.
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I am! I have a pool and I spend a ton of time in it. Not sure why you're so angry about the fact that some people hate the cold.
Fred42096@reddit
For plenty of people it is
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
People who live in places where it doesn't snow tend to romanticize it. :)
SkiingAway@reddit
Plenty of us who live where there is snow, love it.
Fred42096@reddit
Likewise people who live in places without all 4 season tend to romanticize their absence
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
Nah. I moved away from the snow on purpose and I've never once missed it. I miss summertime in the Finger Lakes, but I've never thought "man, I miss having to shovel my car out every morning!"
Fred42096@reddit
Eh. As someone whose been everywhere from the Great Lakes to Florida I think I prefer shoveling snow to the heat. But to each their own
Folksma@reddit
Its always interesting to see how different people view the weather!
I grew up in Michigan and probably by age of 12 I was planning my escape from the shoveling and fall on my ass form the ice😂
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Heheh romanticizing snow is part of my culture here in New England and we get plenty.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
LOL, you disagreed with me, and I'm posting from WNY, where I was born and raised.
Mental_Freedom_1648@reddit
I love it, so I don't agree, but that's alright.
PeanutterButter101@reddit
I'm from Suffolk County and have find memories of autumn as a kid with the local farms we had (assuming they're still around).
Living in Bay Ridge was peaceful (by city standards) while having the benefits of being in the city, shame I only lived there for a few years but I had to move to DC to jump start my career, those student loans had to get paid off.

Athrynne@reddit
New York has a ton of natural beauty. The Finger Lakes, Letchworth, the Adirondacks, The Hudson Valley, and much more. There are tons of well managed State Parks to visit and camp in. I have visited every county in the state (except one) and I've found someone neat in every one!
Fantastic-Pop-9122@reddit
Which one haven"t you gotten to?
Athrynne@reddit
Clinton. I may have technically been in it, but I'm not 100% sure. I used to do Geocaching and I've found a cache in every county but that one. I gotta take a trip up to Plattsburgh one of these days.

I’ve spent a good amount of time in Buffalo. It’s such a great city. It’s one of America’s great bro cities. If you like beer, wings, and sports, you will not have to look very far to find friends to chug with. Every bar stool I have sat on in that city, I’ve made friends with the guys to the right and left of me. I love that place

NYC is strangely underrated. The New York Throughway is a pleasant drive. Buffalo did a lot to improve international relations merely by singing. Thousand Island dressing is awesome and I'm shocked it isn't more popular. Saratoga is on my list of places to go along with Cooperstown.

NYC is awesome. My favorite memory there is listening to a free concert of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in Central Park and running through the park to beat the crowds on the train as they played an encore of Aaron Copeland's Hoe-Down from the Rodeo suite. One of those rare moments in life where you actually get a perfect soundtrack to your life.

I’m originally from around Albany, and I’ve been living in the Rochester area for a long time (after a stint in the South). I love living in NY. The state is absolutely gorgeous, and even in a year with a rough winter I wouldn’t trade the four seasons, especially Fall, for anything. I’m proud of the state’s history and progressive outlook, and I’m glad that all kinds of people can live here happily and peacefully.
And that’s all without even talking about NYC, one of the coolest cities in the world.
Roam1985@reddit
Has impressively withstood an over 40 year long smear campaign against the entire state and it's major city.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
I mean, 40 years ago NYC was still pretty rough. But they overcame.
apgtimbough@reddit
My cousin moved to NYC in the late 2000s. My aunt from rural PA was terrified for her safety. I pointed out my cousin went to undergrad in Cleveland and graduate school in Washington, DC, both were/are far more dangerous than midtown Manhattan.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
Yes, DC was also exceptionally dangerous.
But NYC had roughly triple the violent crime rate of Cleveland in 1990.
NYC did an incredible job turning around their crime rates (along with the rest of the country) and changing their image.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
40? That seems low.
Roam1985@reddit
I've only been around for 40 years and don't want to speak before that. But correct, it is probably closer to 65-75 years.

Fair. I just sort of sit back and let the Sox and Yanks fans duke it out and then take the side of whatever will piss off the most people.

NY is a beautiful state. NYC,not so beautiful.
Arleare13@reddit
It's beautiful in its own way. As far as I'm concerned sitting in Brooklyn Bridge Park with the Manhattan skyline across the river qualifies as "beauty" as much as anything could.

Lived in NYC briefly and had great accommodations. But at the end of my time there I was exhausted. I just remember getting back to Maine and was thinking of if I could turn my temporary job into a full time position in the city.
I really wanted to. I ran the numbers. I had a job lined up. I just realized I would rather just visit and see friends there. I still have great friends in the city proper. I don’t know how they make it work but anyone that loves their city as much as they do to put up with all the bullshit must know something.
