Savagegeese tests the facelifted RS3

I think the price point is a bit high, but it truly is a super unique and fun driving experience.
I’ve tracked it alongside my GT4 and while it’s never going to be the same dynamically, it’s still incredibly fun and the 5 cylinder is amazing.

Dunno, I was just in one for a quick drive and it was pretty numb. I drove it back to back with the Giulia QV, the difference in how responsive the cars were was stark. I went into the back to back drives wanting the RS3 and left knowing for certain that the Giulia was the one to have. I had the 2.5 TFSI in a past TTRS and haven't stopped desiring it for a decade.. still I didn't feel blown away by it's character compared to the Giulia, which was shocking.
watduhdamhell@reddit
Yeah but that's all pointless as the car literally can't go two weeks out of the shop. It's an absolute travesty. I would love one but it is not a car you just buy. Maybe as a 3rd car...
But na. If there's going to be a weekend sports car/3rd in the garage, I'd rather a used Porsche for the same price. Or an M3 if I had to stick with 4 doors.
NetworkStatic@reddit
Did you personally own one? If so, what year?
watduhdamhell@reddit
Perhaps it wasn't clear: I never bought one because the car is utterly unreliable. Even Car & Drivers long term test was damn scathing. Basically, you'll need repairs, and when you do, you'll be a loaner or nothing at all for up to a full month plus before getting the car back in between these episodes.
Yikes. No thanks.
SchumiTheMoney@reddit
Don't you think it's a bit unfair to claim a car, that you don't even own, is "utterly unreliable" based on a Car and Driver review that is now over 7 years old?
watduhdamhell@reddit
Sorry, but if you think "having to had own it yourself" is a prerequisite to saying why I didn't buy the car... We have nothing to talk about. Imagine. Saying "how can you say mars is an inhospitable place? You've never even moved there."
Right. Instead, I read about how mars is an inhospitable place to try and build a space station from reliable sources that have expertise on the matter. So I know: mars is not friendly to earth life, don't try to go there right now.
Same concept with cars. If *every single publication who's job it is to review a sports car says" this car is fucking awfully unreliable, here is the data to prove it," then yeah. Not buying that car.
It's really not that complicated. Some people can and will consider expert advice. Some people can't believe something unless they personally understand the mechanics of it or have seen it themselves first hand (otherwise known as an idiots).
I'm the latter.
mintz41@reddit
That one car on that one test has done a number on the car's reputation, but it does seem to be an outlier overall. Owners report that it has perfectly normal reliability for the class of car it is.
watduhdamhell@reddit
And yet all the consumer reports data says otherwise, as do their competitors data...
Thanks but no thanks!
NetworkStatic@reddit
I see, thanks. Looks like C&D had a 2018. The 2025 I drove was such a good drive that I will take my chances. If it ends up down for repair I will just drive my Carrera GTS. If it stays trouble I will get rid of it and maybe try a Taycan. Not ready to go EV yet though I think.
AlrightAlbatross@reddit
The Giulia handling characteristics shame every other sub-$100k car and plenty of exotics. It’s not really the right yardstick.
LA-ncevance@reddit
Camaro is better, especially ZL1 1LE
NetworkStatic@reddit
Except when you think of the fact that they are more or less the same price point. That yardstick matters a lot in my book. I'll be buying a very gently used/CPO of whatever my next daily is and both the RS3 and Giulia QV will cost low to mid $60 range. The Giulia being that much better of a drivers car (to me) means that I will never get to a nice road and think that I wish I was in the 911. That was a problem with the M2 I had. I foresee it being an issue with the RS3 also.
AlrightAlbatross@reddit
The QV has to be treated as an outlier. If you have access to a good mechanic and are ok with the possibility of an Alfa-esque ownership experience, it’s honestly an easy pick. But that’s not most people who are shopping for a sedan at that price point.
WillTheThrill86@reddit
How did you find your TTRS vs the TTS?
NetworkStatic@reddit
That's a tough one. The TTRS was badass. I had it fairly built, IROZ built engine, APR tune, APR exhaust, swaybar, shifter mods. That thing was quick as hell. However, and it's a big one, that was a 2nd generation TT variant, so the steering was really numb and Audi had not yet sorted out the diff to get the car to rotate. My current TTS is a 3rd generation and Audi clearly figured out some stuff. The steering has a bit of feel to it. I was surprised by that. My last daily before this 3rd gen TTS was an F87 M2 and the TTS has a good bit more actual steering feel, while still being lacking. Also Audi put in work on the diff and my TTS actually rotates like it should (for an AWD car). I am happy with it but of course the 4 cylinder is just "an engine".. not something really memorable or that you think about when not driving. That 2.5 TFSI from my TTRS got in my head.. the sound and rowdy character is something else. I think I will try to give a new RS3 another shot before pulling the trigger on a Giulia QV, because I would love to have another 5 cylinder daily. I will consider a 3rd generation TTRS also when it comes time to switch daily drivers in a few months.
In general a TTRS and TTS drive similarly and the interior of the cars are identical in my experience, which was a let down back in 2014 when I switched from a 2nd gen TTS to a TTRS. Lots more money and you get an epic engine but they didn't touch the interior at all. These cars are very light by todays standards and I think that counts for a lot in terms of tossability.
phast_man@reddit
What were the differences and which did you prefer between your TTRS and F87 M2?
NetworkStatic@reddit
F87 M2 had much more traditional sports car handling, being RWD and having a reasonable weight distribution. The TTRS felt as nose heavy as it is when driven in a sporting fashion. I spent a lot more time managing where the weight is in the car. In the F87 M2 that wasn't an issue. The manual in the M2 is better, while still not being good. The power delivery in the TTRS is just exciting. The N55 in the M2 is just "an engine". The interior of the TTRS (and TT in general) is lightyears ahead of the M2. The M2 more or less has a regular 2 series interior. Both manual gearboxes kinda sucked and sapped the joy out of the power delivery. The TTRS was definitely worse though. TTRS (and all TT) have amazing packaging. All TT variants are light cars. For the size of the car you can carry so much and is very flexible. The M2, while having a much better back seat isn't able to carry large stuff. That is kinda low on the list of priorities but worth mentioning.
mintz41@reddit
doesn't the mk2 TTRS have a manual gearbox literally from a van?
NetworkStatic@reddit
Correct. From the transporter. And its dogshit.
TheSkyline35@reddit
Very interesting reading and opinions, thanks.
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
Every time I assemble my dream list I think about the Guilia QV and then I say "Nah Alfa reliability come on".
Then I'll see a Giulia out in the wild or pics and I'm like "s e x y "
Fishinabowl11@reddit
Non (non-QV) Giulia has been incredibly reliable in my 5 years of ownership. I don't hesitate to recommend one to anyone who's on the fence.

I used to love the RS3
Now it is so boring to me.
I don't know if I evolved or just got old.
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
I wonder if the B58 engine kind of made the DAZA engine less attractive.
Wasn't the 5 cylinder like known as "The German Tuning engine", and then the B58 came out and BMW stuck them in everything, making them way more attainable, and having better reliability while being just as tunable?
Gurrnt@reddit
It has. B58 is a lot more accessible and much cheaper to make power on with a higher limit without touching the bottom end. It's also a lot easier to find spares.
EA855 mods are ridiculously priced, $1500 intake anyone? $1500 catted downpipe? How about an $1100 intercooler? $4500 turbo?
All that to hit around 540 wheel on pump gas while limiting torque to ~530 ft-lbs due to conrod bending risk.
B58 does feel more... Refined. It's overall a smoother motor with a fat low end.
EA855 on the other hand feels funner to wring out due to the 5 cylinder's sound and less refined manners.
coffeeshopslut@reddit
The 5 cylinder was what street racing dudes used to throw a tune on and run 10s and under 1/4 times
Did those dudes move on to the b58?
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
I think the B58 appeal is that it's in everything
You got 3/4 series 5 series X3s. Supras. Ineos.
It's that much more affordable to buy, it's that much bigger community.
Soprelos@reddit
I think Audi have just ruined all their cars in recent years. I used to love the RS3 and Audis in general, but all their new cars suck. Ugly design choices, cheap interiors, and bland driving experiences. The only thing Audi has going for them is the badge and they're somehow managing to ruin that too. Their sales are plummeting for a reason.
GeoffreyDaGiraffe@reddit
How much does the RS3 feel like other MQB cars, like your mk7.5 GTI. Obviously there power train is different, but can you feel the shared DNA?
aak1992@reddit
I had a '16 GTI and it's definitely similar sized when driving around every day/putting around town, interior reminds me of my GTI a bit as far as layout/some materials used.
I'd say the similarities end there though, everything else feels different under load- power delivery, handling, etc. are all significantly better and the car is noticeably rowdier in the sporty settings- something my GTI never had (maybe partly because it was a 6MT instead of DSG).
SavageGooseJack@reddit
Thanks for posting op. Here to answer questions per usual. I love the rs3 the engine is super special but for this price point the ct4vbw will always have my heart
ecstatic_euphemism@reddit
How small are these inside? I only could find an A3 locally and the seating position was super high and it was cramped for me at 6'4
skepticaljesus@reddit
I'm 6'3 and generally find i fit better in small cars than larger ones, because they make a point of prioritizing the driver's seat in ways larger cars don't. The only car I've ever personally tried to get in, then got right back out of because i didn't fit, was a mazda cx30
RV511@reddit
I'm 6'4". its perfectly fine, but no one is sitting behind you.
purz@reddit
Im 6’2 and have about 2.5-3 inches of head room. If you’ve ever driven a C7 corvette I feel like it’s very slightly more roomy than that. Also similar slightly awkward approach angle to get it without a concussion.
SavageGooseJack@reddit
I’m six even and I find it to be fine. That said just like the golf r if your tall no one is fitting behind you. Same problem with the ct4vbw and m2 though
Joker8891@reddit
Love that you brought up the integra type s. I ended up with one myself - for daily use, I just don't see the flaw in FWD. It's so so fun and the interior is so much more usable. You still taking this over the integra?
Napalm3n3ma@reddit
I have a 2022 RS3 and a 2021 Type R. The Type R is way more fun of the two cars, and would be the one I keep if needed to get rid of a car. Crazy. But true.
Successful_Ad_9707@reddit
Depends on where you live. I love a good sporty FWD car, however they suck ass if you wanna have any fun in the wet. That 315hp is great until it gets wet and you just get wheel spin. Now that I have AWD it's amazing the grip my GRC has around tight bends especially in the wet.
The only reasons why I'd take an ITS over the RS3 is being forced into an automatic. Being a manual snob that's a nonstarter for me. If the Integra had a 5 cylinder I'd be all over it, but I just can't do another 4 cylinder rn. Even if it's from a nameplate that I absolutely adore.
lostboyz@reddit
FWD>AWD in most situations honestly. AWD can be amazing, especially in low traction, but in high traction, I'll take any 2wd over AWD.
IGOR_ULANOV_55_BEST@reddit
Please elaborate.
lostboyz@reddit
I like simple and lightweight. A well balanced fwd/rwd car is more fun to drive than an AWD car. That and not dealing with the complexity and higher consumable costs.

Bau5_Sau5@reddit
The a3 is a great car. One of the few that still feels like a go cart and is still 4 doors
Source : I work for audi :)
AllTearGasNoBreaks@reddit
I hope they keep it rolling for another generation. I have to get a new car every 4 years for work. This year we're upgrading the wife's car (which I'll use for work), then in 2030 I get another new one assuming I still work there. I just want a sporty manual sedan around $60K.
NIceTryTaxMan@reddit
That's becoming a very small market of cars. I think just the more top end luxury sedans? 4BW M3 etc. I know those new are a bit more, but there just aren't many manual sedans left
Psyclist80@reddit
I was hoping you guys would mention the 4BW, as it's more natural feeling and capable platform and retains the manual! My ATS is sure footed enough in the winter as well, 50/50 weight distribution and the LSD gives it a good bite with proper tires. 10 winters down in Canada and never stuck.
geokilla@reddit
From strictly an emotion perspective, what do you think of Audi's 5 cylinder vs Volkswagen's and Volvo's old 5 cylinder engines? My family had a Volvo 850 and S70, both with NA 5 cylinders, and I remember the S70 sounded amazing at redline.
Also besides that they're naturally imbalanced, why don't you think 5 cylinder engines are used more often? In the age of downsizing, 5 seems like a good medium between 4 and 6.
Successful_Ad_9707@reddit
They're generally less efficient for things like fuel economy and probably a bit more expensive to produce. I'd love more of em on the market honestly. Odd cylinder engines have so much character. Main reason why I bought my GRC.
My buddy used to have a 2.5 Golf and that car would absolutely sing. Loved that thing.
bikedork5000@reddit
I had a '93 850 and a '97 850 Turbo. Interesting unique cars, but you just didn't get the full appreciation of that motor due to them being slushbox automatics of the worst type. Manual ones are incredibly rare. Shame since the 850 was such a nice looking car.
SavageGooseJack@reddit
I have such limited time in Volvo 5 cylinder cars I can’t really tell you. The few times I have been in manual s60rs I always found them extremely cool. But no real experience driving them hard
TrueSwagformyBois@reddit
What’s the sweet spot on the used market for these with you? Certified pre-owned only or roll the dice from Bill Smuckers Used Car Auto Emporium
Iridium-Silver@reddit
If your main interest in the RS3 is the engine, you could get a previous generation RS3 for much less money and still get the noise.
TROGDOR_X69@reddit
This. Iv been looking into going CPO RS3. Great value as you get Audi Warranty for a few years
bikedork5000@reddit
Or TT-RS, although they are significantly less common.
TrueSwagformyBois@reddit
Good point!
SavageGooseJack@reddit
Bill Smucker is a god damned American hero. That said the cost delta between a new and a used is soo small tbh I would just go new. A new car non track pack is just under 70 and a used car is 61 with 20k miles.
DoktorStrangelove@reddit
Just wanna say thanks for this review and I'm very interested in picking one of these up as a mountain/winter weekender in the next couple years, mainly just waiting to see if we're going to get an XDrive M2 soon to compete with it.

As a 8Y.1 owner I am curious how much tangible difference there is in the driving experience if they were driven b2b. Not that I am considering an upgrade, just curious.
SavageGooseJack@reddit
The car at least in our drives felt far more willing to rotate mid corner than the first rs3 we reviewed and my golf r
Technical-Hour1300@reddit
Hey Jack, is the Golf R really as fun as I think it is? Im torn between the M340i or the Golf R at the moment and trying to justify the premium for BMW.
stillhoody313@reddit

There is truly something special about the Blackwings. Love the content and will continue to support you guys.
teakwoodtile@reddit
Like this car a lot but Team O'Neil's video where the AWD overheats from doing circkes in the snow was a letdown :(
Shomegrown@reddit
Wasn't that where he pulled the fuses for the ESP module? Yeah, that doesn't count, doing stuff like that creates all sorts of unintended consequences. It worked fine when using it as designed IIRC.
teakwoodtile@reddit
Never thought of that, could very well be
Shomegrown@reddit
Don't get me wrong, I fully prefer mechanical systems from Audi or Subaru. But pulling fuses on these electronically controlled systems often isn't the best plan.
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
Say what you will about Subaru, but the AWD system is just incredible, have been driving them for a decade, and never had any problems with the AWD system, yet GR Corolla's, and RS3's seem to have quite a few AWD issues.
Astramael@reddit
Subaru’s standard AWD will absolutely overheat on track. But nobody takes them to the track so nobody knows.
SwissMargiela@reddit

teakwoodtile@reddit
Simple, permanent, what's not to like? Ok, open diffs in mine aren't great but the ABS does what it can to mimic an LSD. This is my first Subaru and it has impressed me all around, even the interior is pretty good for the money.
ikilledtupac@reddit

SavageGooseJack@reddit

ikilledtupac@reddit

BlessedCucumber@reddit
Ex-employees (myself included) have been pretty vocal about how shit the cars and company really are. But we tend to be silenced by either Lucid itself or delusional stock mongerers praying that pos rockets so they can pay for their wife's boyfriend's date night.
ikilledtupac@reddit
Yeah there’s a real disconnect between the perception of these cars are the reality of them. Everyone thinks they are these incredible engineered great cars. But they aren’t. They are half assed janky cars with shitty design compromises and not fun to live with. Sure their motor and battery engineering was amazing, but they lie their ass off the range and even the way it’s displayed in the car is borderline deceptive. I’ve never owned an EV where the remaining range display was the absurd EPA estimate (which they cooked the books on too…) and not reality.
caliwillbemine@reddit
I love my lucid so far. Issues yes, lemon no.

giulimborgesyt@reddit
being a fun ride =/= having insanely low 0-60 figures
I picked an engaging, fun car (abarth pulse, brazilian domestic market) over technologically superior chinese EVs because I value enjoying my daily ride to uni. Those random EVs with 400hp will definitely smoke me, but I don't care.
jabbathepunk@reddit
As the video says, I’m just glad the car exists. That being said, in today’s economy, I’m priced out as justification for fun cars is getting harder to argue in my tax bracket. And even then, for the money I would probably look at other cars.
koopa00@reddit
Love the sound of the car but I couldn't imagine buying it at that price over virtually any of the competition.
caterham09@reddit
Yeah it's really just too expensive. Minimum of 65k means you're really competing with high quality sports sedans that aren't built on a FWD bias platform.
The engine is awesome but it's a steep ask
Kaiathebluenose@reddit
What are all these high quality sports sedans you speak of? The only one and the same ballpark is the ct4 blackwing. And m2 if you want to count it because of the back seats
epsiblivion@reddit
m340i?
mintz41@reddit
The M340i really is nothing special beyond the B58 being tuneable
epsiblivion@reddit
They asked about sport sedans and that’s really the only one worth talking about in the 65k budget.
monkeys_pass@reddit
Have you driven one?
monkeys_pass@reddit
M2, m340, ct4
purz@reddit
Ya I don’t get this sentiment at all. I didn’t want to pay 72k or whatever for mine but it was more so a general post covid prices are insane than the RS3 price is too much.
And technically it has like no competition cause both the CT4 BW and M2 aren’t AWD. Closest thing is the m240i and I think the RS3 is definitely 8-10k better than it.
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
I know a guy who got one. He waited over 2 years for it as well because our city's only dealer gets like 4 allocations a year.
lunaticfridgeprime@reddit
For real. You can get a base outback for way less.
UnusualLeadership408@reddit
For this cash, you're in used RS5 or brand-new M2 territory. The old RS3 had this raw, aggressive charm.
e46CSL@reddit (OP)
Used RS5 is super clinical and dynamically far inferior to the RS3.
You could definitely make an argument for the new M2, but the steering wheel thickness of M cars really turns me off and they all feel heavy.
purz@reddit
The b58/s58 also just sound bad no matter what exhaust you put on them. That and the weird boxy look. I don’t hate it as much as the M3 but it’s always really polarizing to me when I see them. Sometimes Im ok with it sometimes I hate it lol.
Beyryx@reddit
I'm not a fan of the S58's sound and that's mostly down to exhaust system layout, B58s sound wonderful though, can't agree with you there at all.
TheReaperSovereign@reddit

Kaiathebluenose@reddit

Supramantis@reddit
Many people would take an rs3 over an m2.
The new RS3 sounds amazing once you do a catback and valve controller.
Kaiathebluenose@reddit
Why are you acting like the m2 is such an obvious choice over this? And I’d rather have a rs3 or a rs5
cuddlepwince@reddit
Would you buy one over a new M340i?
IAmWellBehaved@reddit
I'd want the 5-cylinder wail and ultimately get the M340. And always wonder if it was the right choice.
mintz41@reddit
Yes, the RS3 is a more serious car than the M340i
SavageGooseJack@reddit
Man that’s a tough one. Depends on what you want. The m340 is a luxury sports sedan. Leaning more luxury than sports. The rs3 competes with track capable sports sedans like the m2 and ct4vbw
vaultdweller1223@reddit
I just went from a 2019 Vette, as my daily driver/only car in the midwest, to this.
Needlessly, to say, this is the worst time of year to ask me if I'm happy with my decision. Ask me in December.
That said, I have a few disappointments. I knew there would be no remote start or ventilated seat. I can add remote start aftermarket and vented seats I don't think made a big difference in the Vette.
I didn't know that I also would have to manually lock the doors with the fob every time I leave the car or that I wouldn't have a compartment like the vette's screen that goes up and down to easily lock and hide valuebles in the car. I could lock the glovebox but that's a pain in the ass every time to use the old fashioned key. And the HUD doesn't display rpm's in every mode like the Vette did. I also get stuck at redline some times for reasons ???
And you have this thing called "Audi Pre Sense" that's an emergency braking system that can overreact and slam on the brakes on its own voltion. You have to manually turn it off every time you start the car.
I realize I'm going from a company's quasi-halo car to another company's entry level model on steroids but I really thought going from 12 year old Chevy technology to a 5 year old Audi technology would be an upgrade.
And to be fair, I never had adaptive cruise control or 360 camera on the Vette. And the screens are better. And the HUD shows directional navigation indicatiors. And one day maybe I'll even spend the $1k or so to activate the matrix headlights. The DCT is pretty damn cool too.
I went with the RS3 because I wanted something that didn't just get by in the snow and rain but thrived
I also was sick of all of the attention and having to watch out for potholes and inclines/curbs like a hawk (I bent or crakced 3 rims). It's also nice going from a black car that gets dirty as hell if you look at it wrong to something called Kemora grey. A backseat is nice too though I feel like cargo room is comparable with how volumous the C7 hatch is.
There was nothing for me personally to cross shop this car with. M2 was the closest but I wanted AWD and TBH I think the m2 draws a lot more attention with its muscular stance and long hood. It's also nice having that short hood to creep out less into traffic to make a left hand turn or peeking out of alleys. I think the biggest thing is my father is a BMW man and I wanted to go my own way. I see the Blackwing mentioned but I drove the base model and it's a fine car but it wasn't for me and no awd.
As much as I kind of shit on the rs3 I love the sound of the engine and how you have to finesse it with the dct. I like how in "comfort mode" it's super docile and quite. And then in Dynamic or the RS settings it's a totally different beast that wants me to push it. It's a hilarious car, it reminds me of my mom's old 2002 Civic from the driver's seat in terms of ride height, seating position, feeling of room, and proportions. Except someone hotrodded the shit out of it and added a massive tech upgrade and luxury materials...but that cheap plastic remains. I'm having fun with it even though I miss my vette :(
Supramantis@reddit
You can touch the door handle after exiting to lock the car without fiddling with key fob

I really like my RS3, it has been a lot of fun. The sound system is awful though.
Supramantis@reddit
It’s horrific, I’m usually listening to that exhaust note though thankfully
Santa_Hates_You@reddit
Yeah, I am gonna replace the speakers and eventually get a valve controller and maybe upgrade the exhaust. Get all of the sound as good as I can.
vaultdweller1223@reddit
I think the speakers are good, it's the processing that messes everything up. Try turning off the settings in the EQ.
Fiveby21@reddit
The steering wheel is still horrendous.
THXFLS@reddit
It especially sucks because the S3 has physical buttons.

This is what the SPA generation S60/V60 should have been.
UmaThurmish@reddit
it looks worse than the old model
spiketeam@reddit
The last one before the revision had a better interior(more physical controls) and arguably better exterior(subjective)
As a former blackwing owner I agree if I had to choose one and rear space wasn’t a big concern I would get the blackwing over the RS3.
Supramantis@reddit
I think the current gen blend of touchscreen and physical controls is perfect outside of the steering wheel controls (I never use them anyway)
spiketeam@reddit
So that’s the 8Y right? They primarily just ruined the steering wheel?
Vendetta1992@reddit
2026 RS3 & 2007 S2000. Hard to find a better combination if you live where you get a lot of snow. Cost is high but I dont feel let down aside from the steering wheel buttons and the piano black center console.
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
I am just not 100% sure about the back seat space.
Given the fact it is a smaller car than the M2, I can't imagine the rear seats being super comfortable.
Vendetta1992@reddit
Im 5'11-6'0 if I sit behind myself I have a finger or two in front of my knees. Tight but comfortable enough otherwise.
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit

Supramantis@reddit
I can confirm as well. Surprisingly spacious back seats, 6 ft tall and no issues with headroom either
