My best friend and I originally bonded over this show. Just randomly knocked and offered him a beer and a board game one day and then a few days later I discovered this show and invited him to try an episode and we became best friends watching episodes every night after work.

When he died I wrote this on a lamp and burned it. I engraved it on a rock and threw in the lake we used to drink by. Wild seeing the Expanse referenced in the open, I think about this quote nearly every day.

I am a Yacht captain with a pilots license and I was a history major. The expanse series was so mind blowing. I think it was the best sci-fi in decades. From a yachting and pilots perspective, it was so well written.

What about a strictly mediocre city? Populated by the most average, middle-of-the-road median class. The most mediocre of them would rise to positions of middle management, with exactly the volume of folks above them and below them, living the absolutely most moderate lives possible.

Those titans of mediocrity could be ground up and packaged as supplements, to be distributed to the hobo and billionaire planets.

I didn't mean camping, I meant surviving in the woods on your own long term, long after your cooler is empty and your tent, sleeping bag, and clothes have fallen apart; just going completely feral. It would be very hard; most people wouldn't survive very long, but it would still be much easier and more survivable than leaving the planet.

I mean staying at home would be the easiest if we’re just going for the easy route. I kinda look at it like, there’s already plenty of resources out there in how to survive in the forest. We’ve done it. But colonizing another planet? That’s new and exciting and honestly it wouldn’t be that wild realistically. Everything will be running on machines and I’m positive there would be some procedures and training on keeping them maintained and operating before we lift off. Plus I’m pretty sure there’s no bears on mars.

Sounds like a recipe for a nasty metal fire.

Lithium and pure oxygen can react quite violently, burning at over 2400c, or 4400F, nearly hot enough to boil steel, and would absolutely vaporize aluminium.

Even in regular atmosphere with 20% oxygen, it can burn at 2000c.

It also burns with nitrogen, one of the few things that will, though slower and at more like 500c.

What works about your “crazy” idea is if you factor in an addict/homeless crossover item. Because there are quite a few studies out there showing that perhaps addicts who survive homelessness while addicted do actually have extremely tough bodies and a certain type of mental grit. You may indeed be onto to something as long as you can address the addiction bit

Hobos are homeless who travel around to find work (hop a train or hitch a ride) and typically have good work ethic, so they may actually be ideal candidates to colonize mars. Therefore this idea is not crazy. Mods, please ban OP

The homeless demographic has changed a lot since the 1930s. Plus these aren't regular homeless people. We will give the homeless every resource they need to not be homeless, then the ones that's still are will be a type of distilled super homeless.
