Was I nearly killed by a truck? Any advice for next time?

Sorry if this is an odd question, but not so long ago I had an extremely scary experience driving my car on the highway in the rain. It was busy, but we were all still able to go fast, the speed limit and some beyond. I was in the normal lane (not the overtaking lane), and suddenly a large truck materialized behind me and drove so close to me that I started to wonder if the driver could see me. I have a small, weak car and could not accelerate much faster than the speed limit, but that truck was glued to me, like, I could not see their headlights in my mirror how close they were. I couldn’t move into the overtaking lane since cars were zooming by fast and the visibility was bad due to the rain, and I was already at the fastest I could go. This was probably the most scared I’d ever felt in my life, as I was desperately trying to keep just ahead of the truck, in case they accelerated even more. It felt like hours, but it was probably 10 minutes total, and I finally turned on my hazards and flew onto an off-ramp off the highway at waaaay too fast a speed. I didn’t dare slow down, since the hazards didn’t seem to make much of a difference (the rain might have played a role). I then sat in some random gas station parking lot for half an hour shaking. So I guess what I’m asking is, is it possible for a truck not to see a car in front of it like that? And if so, what is to be done, what would get me in their field of vision? Hazards, honking? Just in case there is a next time, since now I’m quite nervous around trucks…
