My friend inherited a Desert Eagle from someone in a complicated mental state. I’ve never heard of anyone owning so many spare mags for one.

He might have gotten carried away, and not kept track of how many he was buying. I did something similar with enblocs for my M1 Garands. I just started picking them up whenever I saw them at a good price. I have hundreds now, and I don't know how that happened. lol.
JesusDeputyButbetter@reddit
Did not know other people were like me lol.
alexmikli@reddit
Also maybe he's a dumbass like me and has lost random shit in his room and just bought more. I mean, I mostly lose clothes or trinkets or pill bottles, but if I can a deagle maybe I'd lose deagle mags.
MrKeserian@reddit
On so you're the reason I can't find cheap enbloc clips!
pigionk18@reddit
Looks like someone shot the piss out of that deagle lol. I’d imagine about 90% of deagle owners have less then 100 rounds down the pipe
curiousengineer601@reddit
I think you are 100% correct. This could be the first deagle that was ever used to regularly shoot.
The entire platform is kinda silly. I wouldn’t want it for home defense or to shoot.
FirmOnion@reddit
I know fuck all about guns really, I just get this sub recommended to me- I’ve heard before that desert eagles are ridiculous, can you explain a bit for a noob?
CommercialSpite@reddit
Essentially just too large of a calibre to be practical in most use cases, and can be quite difficult to shoot depending on which calibre and level of experience with high calibre stuff. Although I have heard the .357 magnum models do shoot incredibly nicely compared to the .44 and .50AE models, and there's always going to be something kind of awesome about a hand cannon
OHW_Tentacool@reddit
I own a S&W .460 magnum. I love that damn thing cuz its basically a MASSIVELY overpowered 45. Shoots like a laser, even at 300 yards.
FirstToken@reddit
Nothing too large (in reference to caliber) about the .357 or the .44. There are millions of revolvers in those cartridges, many of them (the revolvers) used daily for anything from target shooting to self defense and hunting backup.
The Desert Eagles are indeed physically very large handguns. This has both pluses and minuses. The minuses are obvious, big, bulky, heavy. If you have small hands they can be difficult to handle well. The pluses are improved recoil and second shot placement.
The physically large, heavy, handgun, when combined with the gas operated semi auto, reduces perceived recoil significantly.
Both the .357 Mag and the .44 Mag Desert Eagles are very light recoil pistols (for their respective calibers). Hand someone a Smith Model 29 loaded with 240 gr factory loads, and hand the same person a DE with the same load. They will find the DE tames that load down nicely. Even the big, heavy, Super Redhawk will have more felt recoil than the DE. The same for something in .357 Mag, say a Blackhawk in that caliber vs the DE. The DE will be more pleasant to shoot.
The .44 DE is my wifes favorite range toy, and she will not touch any of my other .44 pistols if they are running full-house loads.
GeneralBisV@reddit
The 357 magnum ones are some of the smoothest shooting 357 guns I’ve fired honestly. And the one I shot was dead accurate. Had a fixed 2 power long eye relief on top and even shooting off hand it wasn’t hard to slap a torso target at 100 yards with it, and I am by no means an accurate shot with pistols.
alexmikli@reddit
Yeah, it's still a little silly cuz single stack in the 21st century is silly by default, but it's absolutely a carryable gun.
thedarklordTimmi@reddit
It can be summed up as wildly expensive and not all that fun to shoot after a few mags and the luster is gone. Their size, weight and recoil make them terrible for any practical use. If you want to shoot one just rent one from a range.
dhcp138@reddit
Biggest downsides to the .50AE Deagle IMO are the massive grip and the fact that it launches the brass directly back at your forehead
Unicorn187@reddit
The .357 is very soft shooting co.pared to most every .357. A heavy semi-auto.
RacerXrated@reddit
Big, heavy, expensive to buy and expensive to operate, iffy reputation for reliability, and not a great deal of holster availability.
Im_Pronk@reddit
Holster? Just put it back in your inventory
SpeckledJim@reddit
Isn’t it gas-operated as well? Seems like just one more thing to go wrong unless that’s actually needed because blowback would be too violent at such big calibers.
L3PALADIN@reddit
yeah, thats the whole point, needs lockup because the chamber pressure is nearly ten times what you'd get with .45 acp
RacerXrated@reddit
I don't think being gas operated is categorically "more things to go wrong" unless the gas system is a bad one.
RickySlayer9@reddit
It’s just a giant gun with a giant bullet, on a handgun frame. Holds few bullets and is just…big. Ridiculously so.
It is a fun gun but not a good one for self defense
curiousengineer601@reddit
The cartridge ( bullet) is a very large, very powerful caliber. In order to even remotely handle the recoil the pistol is very heavy and still has excessive kickback. So it’s not fun to shoot, not useful for home defense as it would go through your house and kill the neighbor.
The ammunition is expensive and many places won’t let you shoot that powerful caliber at their range.
It would be like taking a drag race car that basically can only go in a straight line and making it your commute car.
I was basically made to say this is the most powerful handgun in the world and a bunch of people bought it for the same reason they buy samurai swords
FirmOnion@reddit
Well explained! Could you attach some sort of foregrip to it to handle recoil?
You’d look absolutely ridiculous but you’d still have a tiny little piece of artillery you could hold in your hand
curiousengineer601@reddit
Probably not practical for a slide operation pistol. I guess you could add a stock and fore grip and turn it into a weird rifle, but you would be better off just making a legitimate bolt action rifle at that point.
Kagenlim@reddit
I mean, it was a legitimate idea by MR to create a carbine version of the DE so it ain't wrong lol
jameson3131@reddit
No, you cannot legally attach a foregrip to a pistol in the US without turning it into what the ATF classifies as an Any Other Weapon (AOW). Due to the stupid National Firearms Act, here’s what the tyrants at the ATF have to say about it: “ATF has long held that by installing a vertical fore grip on a handgun, the handgun is no longer designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand. Therefore, if individuals install a vertical fore grip on a handgun, they are “making” a firearm requiring registration with ATF’s NFA Branch. Making an unregistered “AOW” is punishable by a fine and 10 years’ imprisonment. Additionally, possession of an unregistered “AOW” is also punishable by fine and 10 years’ imprisonment…”
PaterPoempel@reddit
Do you just need to get it registered and pay $200 for an extra tax stamp like for an SBR or is it more complicated?
ecodick@reddit
Yes to registration as a SBR, but currently it's free and does not cost $200. The process is the same other than the price though.
misterdidums@reddit
IIRC, it was made to obliterate an engine block, in the event of a suicide attack via car bomb
t3ddyki113r101@reddit
I think your referring to 50 grendel and 458 socom.
curiousengineer601@reddit
No. The 50 cal rifle was used as both a sniper rifle and an anti material role. The pistol version was never considered.
HoldenOrihara@reddit
It's really big, both the bullet it shoots and the gun itself so it's rather unruly and hard on the wrist. It's fun for some people to shoot but for self defense it's hard to draw in an emergency, hard to carry on your person for every day carry, and a bit rough in a home defense scenario with the recoil. There are just better options that are also cheaper
Q-Ball7@reddit
The entire concept of the handgun is to have something small and light enough that you can get it into a fight.
Power and [practical] accuracy are secondary to "you always have it on you"- you can always shoot your opponent multiple times if you have to, which is why the dominant handgun caliber (9mm) is one that makes doing that very easy.
The Desert Eagle defeats the entire point of that compromise. It's big and heavy, still makes accuracy compromises [while very mechanically accurate, it's just really hard to shoot a handgun well as opposed to a rifle; that's why rifles have stocks on them], and is still not quite at the power level of a "proper" rifle [simplification: the bullet is not going fast enough].
But that doesn't mean it's useless; in fact, it's quite useful for 3 things.
First, to make a statement that you don't care about practicality/just want Big Gun Energy, which is why carrying one for defense is a meme (that one can fall into with certain degrees of paranoia- when enemy appears, get big, that's how every other animal does it). It's why you see it in movies and games- it's way nicer if you don't have to carry the 10 pounds the gun and ammunition actually weighs. "Because it's cool" falls in this bucket.
Second, for handgun hunting (and to a point big game defense). Despite what I just said about not being quite as powerful as a "proper" rifle, it's still deadly to anything on 4 legs within 100 yards provided you can actually hit it, and the Desert Eagle has some advantages over revolvers in this regard (its trigger is better and doesn't require you to do a separate action to take advantage of it, you can very easily mount a scope on it, and you have more capacity than a revolver offers if that 4-legged thing charges you).
Thirdly, for silhouette shooting (or bowling pin matches), which are the only types of competition that will care if the gun "kills" the steel hard enough at extended ranges. It's actually much better than a revolver here; the added weight makes it more pleasant to shoot.
Fantastic_Value1786@reddit
Guy at indoor range was shooting a DEAGLE in 44, it was obnoxious as hell, I was going to laugh but I told my wife, see that's arnie's gun. But yeah, the guy did 3 or 4 mags and turned at us "hey, do you guys want a spare target, I ran out of ammo", of course you did, we are in California and besides 44 is about 1.30cpr for ball ammo there's a bunch of taxes on top of that. But at lest he was shooting it, LOL
ThaA1alpha650@reddit
He was able to get a DE in California that’s pretty cool
Stairmaker@reddit
Not that it's that big of a circle of people. But the desert eagle is not to uncommon to see in magnum field shooting here in sweden.
They shoot up to 180m and it's pretty amazing to see the accuracy they can achieve with handguns.
PaterPoempel@reddit
What caliber do they use?
Stairmaker@reddit
Mostly 357 and 44 magnum. There's probably one or two people who run .50 ae just because they can.
357 and 44 magnum are a lot more common to find. The rounds are cheaper. And the revolver guys are also using those calibers. Thus there's a lot more knowledge around loading them for long range.
GigabyteAorusRTX4090@reddit
While I agree a DE has no practical use for anything, i still want one, and I want to shoot it too.
Mostly because it’s very oversized, loud, and fucking cool.
obxtalldude@reddit
I bought a 460 S&W for this reason.
No regrets. Puts a smile on my face every time I hit a water jug.

Tonycivic@reddit
For a personally owned one I'm sure they dont get shot often. A local shop has a .50 model on the rental board which I guess is out for repair so often since it gets rented regularly.
curiousengineer601@reddit
They keep having to get the blood off the thing from when people get smacked in the face or drop the damn thing.
In my experience anytime someone at the range gets out a Desert Eagle you know the range officer will eventually shut that group down. They inevitably do something dangerous with the DE or something else.
MrKeserian@reddit
Former RSO here. Nothing attracted my attention faster than seeing a DE either get rented, or come out of a range bag.
curiousengineer601@reddit
Not surprised. They are the Hellcats of guns
DerringerOfficial@reddit (OP)
Oh, it was used EXTENSIVELY. As I said in a different comment, something snapped in the guy mentally. Of the very few details I know, apparently he cut off all contact with relatives and made this his EDC with a custom shoulder holster.
My friend inherited a few hundred rounds of .50 AE, and I think that this gun is probably immeasurably more fun to shoot when someone else paid for the ammo (which is why I refuse to rent one at a range and will never buy one myself). I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if he stops shooting it once that stockpile goes dry. That might even be a good time to sell the gun…

I wonder if this thing is better to shoot with the compensator. Shot it at the range once and absolutely hated it.
FeedbackOther5215@reddit
The .44 mag version is one of the softest shooting magnums I’ve ever shot. Even the 50AE didn’t seem bad to me but only shot a mag through that. Hand sizes seems to matter a lot on these as they are they are blockier than a Glock.
Not_an_alt_69_420@reddit
I've shot about a dozen Desert Eagles, including all three variants and ones with and without compensators, and I've always been disappointed by how easy they are to shoot. They're no worse than a 1911.
Then again, I have hands that would put Lana's to shame and enjoy shooting shotguns one handed.
obxtalldude@reddit
I'd think so - the one on my 460 S&W seems essential.
quickscopemcjerkoff@reddit
Most likely yes. I have never shot a deagle, but I have shot a compensated 500 magnum revolver and it really wasn’t that bad with range ammo.

The mags hold only 7-9 rounds, depending on the caliber; it looks like a .50-caliber, so 7, but many Glock or 2011 owners have just as many, higher-capacity mags.😂
The Eotech is a bit bizarre, but hey, the guy was probably broke after buying all of that and just grabbed the optic off his AR for range days.
Having said that, the gun does look like it was dragged behind a truck or used as a make-shift hammer.😂

I get it. I don't need 25 or 30 beretta92 mags. But I sure do loading them all up and keeping a bag full them, and then just being able to grab the bag and a single gun and go to the range, and just grt to enjoy shooting.
I probably also don't need a dozen 8 plus round 1911 mags, but same idea.
It's fun to sometimes just grab something ready to go and go play at the range without lugging around a whole range bag
StonewallSoyah@reddit
Putting that eotech on a deagle is definitely a complicated mental state.
Patsboy101@reddit
The only context I’d want a Desert Eagle other than to say I own a Deagle would be as a hunting handgun. Though I would rather have a 44 Magnum one as ammo choices are more varied than 50 AE.

I don't see a problem. Why are you having a tough time understanding that some people like to shoot and want magazines filled to keep from having to reload them or having enough of them on hand? Some of you are too concerned with things that you are having a cognitive dissonance with.
Reminds me of friend who complains that we don't invite him to go shooting or showing off our things anymore with him. He too is perplexed, flabbergasted, annoyed, even angry because we buy ammo in bulk and never need to get a few boxes of ammo at a shop on the way to wherever.
