This actually happened in southern CA like a year ago or so. Maybe it wasn't this way in every market, but I remember specifically when diesel was just below 87 octane.

I was hauling fuel during this time and had many conversations with old timers about it.

When gas first spiked pointe sent me 2+ hours to a TA out of route because it was where gas was supposedly cheaper.

I got there, lot was absolutely filled to the gills, and the pumps were out of service.
