The Soviets did that. Whether it was inspired by a captured Type 11 I do not know.

The actual idea behind the Type 11 was to allow a squad's riflemen to feed the machine gun with their standard issue rifle clips when it's allocated ammunition supply ran out.

However the problems this layout caused (slow rate of fire and easy ingress of dirt and debris in the action) far outweighed the benefit of not having to lag a couple spare pans around.

There’s something about hopper-fed firearms that I just find intriguing.

I certainly wouldn’t want to have to rely on one in battle, but as a machine I think they’re pretty neat.

Around 2012 I bought a can of 1947 dated ammo on stripper clips. I imagine that there’s still a good supply of it floating around the former Soviet Union.
