Deck key isn’t turning the diesel fuel cap.

I need some suggestions. Any idea how to get this thing open? Just bought this boat and am trying to bleed the fuel line but need to get fuel into the tanks… pls help 😩
OldGaffer66@reddit
Needle nose pliars should do the trick, more leverage.
stumanchu3@reddit
That’s the saddest key I’ve ever seen.
StatisticalMan@reddit
I have a key like that on my keyring. Keeps it handy and if caps are opened regularly they aren't that tight. In OP case though he is going to need something to break it loose first.
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
It’s the only one I could find at west marine 🥲
stumanchu3@reddit
That’s where all the problems start. Please tell me you didn’t pay $400 bucks for that, west is a rip off.
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
They definitely are a rip off honestly their prices are appalling but no, I only paid like six bucks for it
MollyG418@reddit
We got the same one free from a vendor at an event at our local boat shop. Just tried using it on the waste tank this weekend and had the same results as you. It got chucked. Sorry you wasted $$ on it. I'd take it back.
stumanchu3@reddit
Deal of the century from West Marine! I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Happy sailing and fair winds to you skipper!

Thanks 🙏🏾 🤙🏾 I’ll post when it opens and what worked.

WM is pretty fairly priced in an environment with razor thin margins plus you can price match.
deltamoney@reddit
You can price match
Wierd657@reddit
WM also has the Davis stainless key, their own stainless key, and the Groco spanner wrench all next to each other (if in stock).
Vicker3000@reddit
Use a wrench, not a key. This is what you need:

Redfish680@reddit
This is the answer. Pricey, but worth it.
Foolserrand376@reddit
this is what you use. if this doesn't do it then you may have to go down the replacement road.
Lopsided_Ad_5152@reddit
There are 2 Perkos at most West Marines. You got the ones with the "tits" too far apart. The other one looks exactly the same except they are closer together. That's the one you need.
AkumaBengoshi@reddit
You need a BFH

If you don’t have any luck using penetrant and/or a long handled deck key, you can drill the two holes all the way through stepping up to at least 1/4”, insert either two bolts or an appropriately size u-bolt, and then use any long handled tool of your choosing as a lever wedged between the two bolts. Once it breaks free, either replace the cap or clean up the threads and fill the drilled out holes with JB Weld.
Done it many times.

OK this is brilliant thank you! If all else fails I think this will be the way,

https://image.fisheriessupply.com/image/upload/w_476/f_auto/t_fs_shared/static-images/49326-sdl-sea-dog-line-335690-1-it1-tif I have this deck plate key, two sizes and a bottle opener
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
I have one of those but it also didn’t work? Just started stripping the metal on the plate.
nomadicSailor@reddit
New boat to you, 'eh?
You've just taken your first step on the incredibly rewarding journey of itty bitty jobs turning into a major project. Had one of those freeze up so bad that it had to be replaced.... That itself should be an easy job. But no, ended up replacing the fuel tank(s).
Have fun!
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
😂😂😂 you guessed it. Lmao! Yup this was supposed to be just a fuel line bleed and now I’m here. Thanks for the well wishes 🤙🏾
zhelih@reddit
Do you mean you are trying to turn and it is stuck? A bit unclear.
Anyway, if that’s the case, put a wooden block on top of the cap, hit it with the hammer couple times strongly to shake things up. If the cap is stuck, this will do it. Happens often after the winter.
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
Yesss that’s what I mean, it’s stuck and won’t rotate. I’ll give this method a go, thank you!
iddereddi@reddit
Any chance the tank is not vented? A little bit of under-pressure will suck the plug nice and tight. You can use an adjustable wrench to grab the cap key, put a piece of wood on the key and step on it to keep the key lugs from popping out the holes.
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
That could be a possibility. I’m trying to figure out tho that these levers do 🫠
Whole-Quick@reddit
Its possible the O-ring under the fuel cap is tired and making the filler cap very sticky to open. My old boat did that when I got it.
A new O-ring every decade or so will prevent that issue, or worse letting deck water into the fuel tank.
Ok-Bar-8785@reddit
What the he'll is this? More picks please. Where are the pipe's coming from / going after this area. How many engines? For a 2 tank set up It's common to be ablento select the tank for feed and return. In the photo it looks like the tanks are linked which is odd.
hottenniscoach@reddit
To me it looks like a two tank set up with one motor and a tank selector. I could be wrong though.
Quagers@reddit
Wait, every fuel cap I've ever seen in my life has a star on top to take a winch handle. What is that tiny key thing, is this a US thing?
Whole-Quick@reddit
Yes, it's a North American thing on older boats.
Oobenny@reddit
I’m in the US, and I’ve never seen this either.
pfreexy@reddit
Those are nice
dwkfym@reddit
You should have a deck wrench on your boat too.
Raneynickelfire@reddit
Put a piece of pipe on the end of the key like you would a lugnut on your car.
archlich@reddit
Use a metal one with a longer handle
keeldragger@reddit
yes - metal spanner tool with a longer handle and gently tap it with a hammer if needed.
icouldnotpreventitVL@reddit (OP)
Didn’t know those existed thanks for the suggestion 🤙🏾
HealthyHappyHarry@reddit
Put a cheater on it for leverage. A piece of pipe or a long handle crescent wrench
Cambren1@reddit
Try a better key, if that doesn’t work take a small drift and a hammer and insert the drift at an angle and tap with the hammer to release it. This is last resort, since the drift may damage the hole. If you are careful, it won’t.
Naive_Adeptness6895@reddit
Put some lube it wont get better.
IndyBananaJones2@reddit
Just put an adjustable crescent wrench on the deck key to get a little extra leverage.
Starfield00@reddit
Maybe needle nose pliers would work
dijon0324@reddit
Maybe some vice grips on the key to get more leverage, hit it with a lil pb blaster too
eotty@reddit
A screwdriver in each hole, hold the top of thw screwdrivers, wedge the winch handle or anything long - eg a socket wrench or similar. And pull the lever.
