Is my GPU bad for blender?

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 and I am struggling to animate basic things on blender such as particle systems. Is this because my GPU sucks? Should I buy a used NVIDIA GeForce 3060 instead?

Rendering (live and final) is dependent on the GPU.
Modelling and animating is CPU-dependent.

The larger the model, the more VRAM you need.
The more CUDA cores you have, the faster the rendering speed.
These features do different things.

Whether a GPU "does the trick" depends on the size of your model/animation. It's impossible to say.
But anything from the 30-series and up would be a big improvement over your 1660.

Small animation failure

When something "crashes" or "breaks", it's usually a lack of RAM, VRAM, or CPU cores. When something is "slow", it's related to the CPU or GPU speed.
Since you're rendering with Cycles, I'd guess you're running out of VRAM. In that instance, a 3070 would give you +25% the amount of VRAM as your 1660. Alternatively, if you could find an RTX 3060 with 12 GB of VRAM, you could 2x your VRAM, but the rendering speed would be a bit slower than the 3070.
I don't know how much you're willing to spend, but since you're likely limited by VRAM, I'd try to get a used RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of VRAM, or even a new RTX 5060 Ti with 16 GB of VRAM. RTX 3060 (12 GB VRAM) as the more cost-effective choice.

You need a recent nvidia gpu, cause of optix, even mid range cards, do wonders

Beyond running some gpu stress tests, idk, but is outdated for sure, any gpu, even RTX 20** series, will perform better, due the tensor/rt cores and optix, is just another beast of compute, from which blender is very very optimised for.

Well whatever you can find depending on your market which is a 1) Nvidia card (for cuda) 2) has RTX, for the tensor cores uplift, but 30* series is good, if you are really blender bound, use this to search for cards performance. It's a weak gpu these days. You can get a solid used card for 200 to 300.

A 1660 isn’t good for much anymore beyond basic rendering and older games, it’s a very old gpu that wasn’t that powerful to begin with. Competent and well priced for the time, yes, but that was seven years ago. It could definitely be holding you back in blender.
Whatever newer gpu you can afford is going to be an upgrade. However, make sure your cpu isn’t also holding you back if it’s the same vintage as that gpu.
