Motor Oil Is The Next Shortage And It’s Just As Bad As Higher Gas Prices

I’d argue it’s worse. You can still drive your car with high gas prices. You can’t drive your car with no motor oil.
Delmorath@reddit
I went to the store 5 days ago and bought enough synthetic oil to do one oil change on both my wife, and my cars. I also had her oil changed early yesterday, and I'm getting mine done next week. Already scheduled. Not going to take a chance on this.

Dovetails with why Trump's shot callers pushed the legislation through to cut gasoline with more ethanol.
It becomes corrosive.
It's sabotage by POTUS.
nibbles200@reddit
Ethanol isn’t going to destroy cars man. There’s debate to be had in regards to its carbon impact through the life cycle, food for fuel blah blah but ethanol has been used as the octane booster for decades replacing MTBE and tetraethyl lead (why it’s called unleaded).
Just because the GOP wants to use it to hide their shame doesn’t mean it’s a master plan to destroy all cars. It’s just not going to happen.
I do believe it’s stupid in that the sudden increase in demand will decreased ethanol stocks which in turn will increase its price and thus not make that big a difference to the actually price at the pump. Particularly when we get to into the next harvest cycle and costs from the high diesel and fertilizer makes it way into the production costs.
pashalka31@reddit
Raise the lens a bit.
Once you understand what Trump has at stake you get an accurate assessment of what he is willing to destroy to keep it.
In 1994 Viktor Bout was dispatched by an ex KGB officer, St Petersburg politician, and current mobster named Vladimir Putin to trade soviet surplus arms to the Taliban for heroin that the Russian Mafia who took over the government could use to enslave/trade to the people of Russia for their paper shares of the former Soviet socialist state awarded to them by Yeltsin.
Behind Trump and Epstein, Viktor Bout was the most important piece on Putins Russian mafia chessboard.
The Soviet Union was the 2nd largest war machine in world history. The entire economy was based on destroying the west. When it collapsed it had more arms than any collapsed empire in human history.
And those weapons all made it to every genocide, war, conflict, or massacre in the world by way of one man-
Viktor Bout.
From Charles Taylor in Liberia to the ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia to the invasion of Ukraine, you can track it by its supply chain logistics.
Army runs on food, fuel, and ammunition. And they all get moved by way of the path of least resistance to their point of use.
For anyone whose army or gang ran ak-47's chambered in 7.62x39mm that means it came from Russia.
In 1994 Putin also engineered the Russian invasion of Chechnya. After turning Akhmed Kadyrov Putin murdered him and brought his son in to replace him. Since Kazakstan declared its independence, Chechnya and Iran became the necessary gateway to Afghanistan where the worlds heroin was produced in the 1990's.
Weapons are heavy so they tend to travel by rail or truck. So they take the low road rather than the high mountain pass as much as possible.
That path led through Iran.
Drugs are much lighter and easier to carry so in the 1990's they are the preferred currency of organized crime next to cash or more recently, crypto.
As Putin and his Mafia of gangsters traded the worlds largest surplus of guns for heroin, then traded the heroin for all the critical industry, oil and gas, metals, fertilizer, uranium etc that made them billionaires in Russia, they had almost everything they needed to complete their conversion from psychopathic street thug to legitimate respectable oligarch. ( Putin now makes $750M a day off of this war. )
But they were still trapped in the hyper violent hell on earth they themselves created between St. Petersburg and Moscow and wanted out.
So they laundered that money into the UK and US using Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump's commercial real estate. They tried Trump's casinos first but collapsed them under the mass of $1.4 TRILLION. It's a lot to hide in a craps table. But they made an asset out of Trump by having Epstein set up and produce a VHS of Trump raping a 13 year old little girl. (This was the video that DEA/FBI agent Bob Levinson was shown just before Russian intelligence baited him to their proxy state: Kish island Iran)
So they collapsed the casinos into bankruptcy, murdered Mark Etess, Jonathan Benanav, and Stephen Hyde and started using commercial real estate instead. They would hyperinflate the valuation, then sell it back and forth to each other passing the bulk of the cash back under the table.
As you worked 40-60 hrs a week to save up for a down payment on a house down the street and run comparables, the cost of your place went up 4-12x by comparison, but your wages didn't. So you paid the corruption tax multiple times. (You are the victim in Leticia James lawsuit against Trump and this is why he claims Mar-a-Lago is worth $1B and refuses to share his tax records.)
But it all tracked back to Viktor Bout and a Egyptian man named Al Zawahiri whom Putin brought into Russia between 1996-97, managed by young patriotic FSB officer named Alexander Litvenenko and cashflowed to fund an organization the Saud ruling family started called Al Qaeda. Al Zawahiri was the key man in Iran that allowed the Russian jewish Mafia to move those same guns and heroin through a muslim country as long as Putin could hold Iran as it's proxy state perpetually. (Same basic play as Assad in Syria until it collapsed and assad ran to Moscow. His replacement was a Al Qaeda operative handpicked by Al Zawahiri) Hence why Putin and Trump rely on their co-conspirator Netanyahu to pound the drum of Iranian nuclear capacity for 30+ years.
In 1999 Putin then blamed a non-existent islamic entity called the "Liberation Army of Dagestan" from Chechnya for blowing up some Russian apartment buildings. Putin committed that terrorism, but that started the "War on Terror" that 2 years later took U.S. troops to Afghanistan and Iraq.
Putin created the demand for the weapons he had in abundance by dragging the US into a 20 year war at the same time he started an economic war against the U.S. by devaluing the dollar with rigged real estate while leasing U.S. and EU politicians and podcasters cheaply and secretly (FBI Arctic Frost investigation that Trump had Patel disappear then fire every FBI agent that investigated him)
It was all enabled by the greed of wall street bankers and hedge fund managers who would do business with anyone for money: (Jeffrey Epstein and Jes Staley at JP Morgan Chase, Leon Black at Bank of America etc)
But it left an evidence trail of deep trafficking ruts through Ukraine, Iran and Venezuela. Putin invaded Ukraine as the decorruption audits for NATO and EU membership exposed his corruption there (Kolomoiskiy). Putin instructed Trump to assassinate the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani as the General began realizing that the same drug gangs he fought earlier in his career were funded by the same people shooting at his men from Israel.
So when Viktor Bout was recorded by the DEA on the border of Colombia and Venezuela trading soviet rocket launchers for cocaine it stalled Putins operation.
Putin then used his asset Trump to clean up. Trumps son and security guard awarded a contract to Silvercorp (Jordan Goodreau) to send Luke Denman and Airan Berry into Venezuela where they were set up to be captured and traded back to the U.S. for Fat Leonard and Alex Saab. (Key men in Putins espionage and money laundering circuit)
Putin assassinated Litvenenko with polonium laced tea and kidnapped Britney Griner who was then traded for Putins most incriminating secret chess piece- Viktor Bout. Bandar Saud had ran interference in the UK demanding prime minister Tony Blair disband the special investigation unit researching Zawahiris Swiss accounts or he "would no longer be able to help the UK stop terrorism". The 7/7 bus and tube bombings in London sealed the deal and Blair disbanded the SIO. Tonys is now bolting out of retirement and on Trump's "board of peace" as his wife had been funded by both Prevezon (Russian real estate front) and the Saud ruling family via the Al Yamamah arms trafficking case she represented them in.
This is what "the Epstein files" is. During the Cold war there were only a few gateways across the iron curtain. Israel was the major one because it was formed in 1948 by 650,000 refugees. 70% were from the Soviet bloc. Robert Maxwell traded espionage stolen from the US to Moscow to build the IDF with arms smuggled through Ukraine. The Zionist Mafia created the Likud party/Netanyahu to control Israel at the same time they infiltrated the US Republican party via Ronald Reagan and Zionist operative Henry Kissinger managed all the U.S. presidents from inside the oval office. The Saud ruling family funded the Zionists for Iran Contra as Jeffrey epstein ran aviation logistics for les Wexner out of Rickenbacker AFB. Now they can't stop lying as their transnational corruption eats them alive.
Corruption is cancer. But it ALWAYS takes the path of least resistance-
Politicians and Billionaires.

By being able to price fix via OPEC Russian and Saud control of energy is what kept the western economy in a perpetual state of slavery as they bled it out. But it required camouflage.
The goal of Putin and Xi is to dethrone the USD. it's the biggest threat to both their money laundering exposure.

Ronald Lauder is who gave Epstein his fake passport in Austria with the Saudi name so he could do his work for the Zionist Mafia keeping all the Iran contra coverup going.
Same time Felix Bloch (Lauders assistant) was caught passing espionage to the Russians.
Austria has always been a hotbed for espionage. But it's when you understand that Israel was the only real crossroads across the iron curtain during the Cold war that the espionage becomes traceable.
The Likud/zionist mafia made their deal with the Kremlin to allow "Operation Bridge" to resupply the IDF with warm bodies from Russian pogroms so they could keep the Israelis enslaved to their corruption.
This is the Mafia that made 2008 happen and stole $4trillion out of the US economy.
They are prepping a kill shot as soon as Warsh can dictate the interest rate they just force everyone into bankruptcy.

one time i argued over whether a napkin was dirty or not. first, heh, it was a good bit crinkly; but napkins do get that way, yet still are useful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after further inspection, the napkin appeared to have acquired a nasal booger in its fibers.
you wouldn't believe what happened next. i still can't believe it myself. only the part of the napkin with the booger on it was dirty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
most of the napkin remained useful for up to 4 and half weeks
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i used the napkin to soak up some condensation left behind by a cup of water. that cup? my main carry- a steel amazon 16oz. i'd say it's indestructible, but then i'd argue that i could most likely step on it to destroy it. or bang it with a hammer.
that day, i proved myself wrong. i'd also argue that i proved myself right. depending on if most of me really believed it was indestructible.
but then! i could (and would) argue that "indestructible" was a figure of speech.
BUT then i could argue that if one respects language, then figures of speech count as speech with intent. i knew what i was doing when i used the word "indestructible!" i could get away with saying that phrase, and leave a little room for misinterpretation.

Good thing electric oil systems aren’t exposed to gasoline and water… they last significantly longer 10 years in many cases.
Spuckler_Cletus@reddit

Brilliant_Brain_5507@reddit
If you’re in the US, I hope they don’t take away your electricity and give it to an AI data center. Gonna make charging an EV pretty tough. Not that there wouldn’t be other more pressing issues if they do.
DieselPunkPiranha@reddit
You mean like the folks in Lake Tahoe? Yeah, I already fled. However, I do recommend solar generators for anyone who can't cells installed on their home. Doubly so if they live rurally.
Traditional-Handle83@reddit
Yup and the solutions I've heard from autozone make zero sense because you can't just go and change viscosity thats used except for short term emergency use such as your connection arm bearings are failing, thicker may keep you from losing the engine. Engine has less than 2 qts left, a different viscosity might hold off till you can get a bigger jug of correct amount but its not a long term solution as it'll damage the oil pumps, sensor and internal parts when they don't move correctly.
Spuckler_Cletus@reddit
Most viscosity recommendations in North America are because of CAFE standards, not because of what an engine can actually use. Outside of Canada and the US, most engines are recommended viscosities all over the map. The 1GR-FE in my 4Runner calls for 0W-20 here, but in Australia, at the same average temps, I can run 5W-30, or even 10W-40. This is the same exact engine. There’s no special bearing clearances. There’s no special ECM. There’s no variable VVT, etc. It’s exactly the same.
For anyone reading this, you can probably run much thicker oil in your vehicle than your North American manual states. Just look at GM immediately attempting to solve the L98 issues by going from 0W-20 to 0W-40.

V1ld0r_@reddit
All electrics really. Some do have oil in differentials but yeah, most are direct drive so not a concern at all.
There-s a reason JPMorgan and the likes are buying up utilities and ditching more traditional stuff (https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/jpmorgan-turns-more-bullish-on-european-utilities-upgrades-one-name-4592163). Pair the oil crisis with all the power hungry datacenters planned and built for the AI boom and it's pretty obvious.
I think the domino is starting to fall apart for oil dominance...
RedJerzey@reddit
You just unknowingly answered a question I had yesterday when I ordered my tesla Y. It was 0% APR financing for 6 years with 3k down. Figured it was tesla direct financing... but my loan came back from Chase. Why would chase bankroll a 6 year loan with no interest? Well if they are buying utilities, they want max demand to increase prices. Makes sense now. Electric cars and data centers will do that.
V1ld0r_@reddit
Yes they will. I also suspect Solar equipment is going to see a sharp rise as will taxes, etc on it in a medium\long term.
Yet once you do have enough solar it becomes much nicer to spend near 0 for going places.

So why have there been crazy sales on motor oil lately. I have been buying motor oil for $14-15/5qt for about a year.
IntoTheCommonestAsh@reddit
1) There might be a lead time between when these sales are arranged behind the scene and when they actually happen. These sales might have been set up months ago.
2) The middle man compapy between the maker and you is in the business of moving stock, not gaming the market, nor logistic, nor planning for the future.
3) They might be optimistic about the whole thing, and banking on YOU being insecure and stocking up, thus making bank this quarter, which is what matters. Some companies benefit from our worries, fears, and panic, simple as that.

Ditto liquid propane for the furnace. Had the delivery truck here last week to top it out for next winter. Sometimes I wait til the hottest day in August to call em. Prices on LP aren't going *down anytime soon, is my guess.
karl4319@reddit
Damn. This is going to suck since this is going to quickly gum up logistic networks. Trucks can't deliver supplies and goods without oil in their engines. Which will create shortages and drive up prices dramatically.
So even those of us that drive an EV and don't need oil ourselves will get impacted by this. My advice: same as always, stock up for a few months of no supplies.
Faith_Lies@reddit
Even EVs need lubricant fluids of all kinds.
This will impact literally every known vehicle type.
MikeW226@reddit
Not a car, but you're right- my little 3 cylinder diesel tractor uses 3 fluids- gear oil in the front axle (4wd), hydraulic oil AND motor oil. Lotsa fluids in all kinds of machines.
DieselPunkPiranha@reddit
This. EVs are only part of the solution, both, regarding prepping and longterm sustainability. Oil gets used in almost everything. All companies could switch to non-oil based plastic alternatives, but it's still used in large scale logistics at every level. Agriculture, too, as most tractors are not EVs.
The quickest solution would be for the fedrats to immediately back down, remove all forces from the region, end support for Israel, and sue for peace. Unfortunately, that's the last thing they'd do.
karl4319@reddit
That wouldn't be enough. The supply chain has been interrupted for too long and even if the war ended today, we would still see oil prices increase and shortages for months.
DieselPunkPiranha@reddit
You're right. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. The current administration did exactly what previous ones understood was A Very Bad Idea With Serious Long-term Global Consequences.
Salty-Passenger-4801@reddit
Have we not learned our lesson from COVID???
Cmon, no one needs to start hoarding oil.
Spuckler_Cletus@reddit
I agree. It would be prudent, however, to purchase a few oil changes ahead. For a significant number of people, an extra two years of oil is probably three 5qt jugs per vehicle. Not exactly like 200 rolls of toilet paper.
NiceGuysFinishLast@reddit
I got told I was hoarding by people in this sub because I bought 3 hugs of 0w20 that goes in both my cars and 2 jugs of 10w40 for my motorcycle like 2 days ago.
hkr@reddit
People forget what sub they're in. I'd rather have a jug or two and not use it or give it away versus hoping that everything's back to sunshine and rainbows in two years.
Spuckler_Cletus@reddit
Just remember, stored in a climate controlled area, free from wild temperature swings, above freezing………..finished crankcase oil is good for *at least* five years, unopened. Probably much longer.
hkr@reddit
Yup. I'll shake the jugs before using them, as the additives are the only thing that might breakdown faster. But, in all honesty, in the worst case scenario where motor oil is expensive or mixed with crap those jugs might still turn out to be a better alternative. In the best scenario, I'd be more than happy to discard those jugs for something fresh.
misterespresso@reddit
Exactly, I was gonna hop in the thread in this guys defense the other day, because I thought it was crazy he got downvoted for prepping in the prepping sub, alas I was too tired. I’m glad I could say my piece today though.
misterespresso@reddit
If you drive all your cars, I don’t think that’s a problem. See most of us don’t have several vehicles like you, and tbh unless you are driving all four and all four need 2 oil changes in the next few months(that’d be weird timing and ALOT of driving) you may have gotten too much; but none of us know for certain.
I personally got 2 jugs of 0w myself, but I know for a fact both jugs will be used by august due to a 6000 mile road trip. Getting oil now was non negotiable for me, as if the shortage does come and I didn’t have both jugs, we’d literally have to stop driving the car when we get home. 2 just gives me until around winter to worry about the next change.
Tbh I’m on your side. Yes it makes the shortage worse, but being angry at us isn’t gonna help the problem. And quite frankly if we didn’t buy it others would. Yes, again that makes shortages worse, but no one is gonna look me in the eye and tell me not to prep for me and mine just to watch everyone else hoard. In a way, it’s in our nature, and most species nature, to collect what you need before it’s gone, before someone else.
NiceGuysFinishLast@reddit
I mean I'm going to finish a 3Kish mile road trip in my girlfriend's car this week, so I'm 60% of the way to an oil change already. I ride my motorcycle to work all week unless it's raining, in which case I drive my car. I drive my car for weekend errands that require carrying things. Obviously my girlfriend drives her car during the week. So yes, all 3 vehicles are driven regularly.
misterespresso@reddit
As I said, we can’t know for certain. I was trying to say no one can really know anyone’s situation AND we are in the prep sub.

They might buy base oil for 0W8 from Shell, but thy have inhouse supply and supply base oil fora lot of others as well. Seems like Shell (Pennzoil and quakerstate) and Aramco( Valvoline) will be the most impacted, while everyone else is trying to fill the gaps.

Still going to make prices jump, and brands to be absent from the shelfs. The JIT supply chain application in oil is no more different then TP ... If they ant got it, you ant got it.

How's synthetic vs reg? Min we idea synthetic, just curious.
ketamine_bolus@reddit
Synthetic is basically a marketing term. It's just a much higber grade oil
OGCASHforGOLD@reddit
It’s normal oil plus an additive package
mediocre_remnants@reddit
There's no standard definition though. Anyone can call any oil "synthetic", it's not a regulated term. The industry has a basic agreement on what it means for an oil to be synthetic, but it's not based on regulations. It's just a word they made up. There's no fundamental difference between how regular oil and "fully synthetic oil" are produced.

Look at what your vehicles require and do a deep dive on what oils you can actually use in them.
There may be more options than what most people think they "must" buy.

All this hype as been effective. I have my oil change scheduled for Thursday. It will be 68.00 for mobile one synthetic oil.
TubeSockLover87@reddit
Thats cheap. Synthetic oil changes at quick lubes in PA/Nj charge almost $100
AwakePlatypus@reddit
That's insane....I change it myself and it costs me ~$25
TubeSockLover87@reddit
Yessir. 6qts of havoline full syn $23 on amazon. Multiple weights.

I paid 110 at a jiffy lube in GA last week because I'm away from home.

This is at Walmart my though. Most other places it is in the 100.00 range.

We go through a lot at my house we all have to drive for our jobs. Usually keep a years supply on hand for everything we just supplied for another year and engine rebuilding.

Welp, the CEO of Chevron did say there would be “physical shortages” two weeks ago…
satsugene@reddit
Motor oil is a relatively infrequent purchase. Sure it adds up, but paying double for an oil change isn’t quite the same as getting bent over at the pump every few days.
Might also be that I’m in CA and my corner station is $6.49/gal today.

Once oil prices and availability go up the food will become much higher as well.
