Describe how you felt the first time you played asteroids or space invaders?

I remember it like yesterday...being completely mesmerized.

The drift of the ship if you used the thrusters when playing Asteroids

Like I found my purpose.

I felt like I didn't have enough quarters left to do my laundry.
jtrades69@reddit
no idea, too long ago.
did you ever play yar's revenge?
CynicalOne_313@reddit
Those were two of my favorite games, plus Galaga, Centipede, and Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man.

I felt like I was living in pure science fiction. It was amazing.
StrictFinance2177@reddit
I couldn't believe how addicting it was.

I was blown away by asteroids. It was less structured than other games like space invaders. You could move anywhere on the screen and loop back around back on screen. Asteroids and Battlezone (3d tank battle game) looked pretty basic with their very simple graphics but the way you interacted with the environment in the games probably influenced the games popular now

Asteroids was mesmerizing for this reason - I loved the way they engineered lack of gravity and the thrusters to behave. It was an experience like nothing before, trying to stabilize yourself in the engineered ‘vacuum’ environment.

Space invaders seemed so hard to me. Our bowling alley had tabletop Galatian and Pac Man, and eventually Ms Pac Man, and I think those were mind blowing for me. Asteroids was so much fun until you started moving. I just felt completely screwed at that point.

Dum.......dum......dum.....dum....dum...dum..dum.dum....Kaablowey!! lol

The dopamine hit was intense. I became addicted to space invaders and pit fall... which led to Joust and Dig Dug. I worked doing lawns just to support my addiction.

Like it was amazing, and that I was a total loser, because I died almost instantly.
East_Relationship722@reddit
Tonce I started drifting on Astreroids, I knew I was toast.
InvestigatorJaded261@reddit
The minute you used the thruster, you were toast.

FWIW, PlayStation Network has a bunch of old arcade classics ported to console. I got all the Atari and Namco games for just a few bucks.
I still play the original arcade versions of Galaga, Asteroids, Centipede, and Gauntlet, ported to PS5, at least one of them, a few times a week.
(Galaga over morning coffee is regular a thing around my house. My kids love it, too. We are all competitive for high score, but we all suck. I think high score right now is less than 100k. I remember the machine at my local arcade (Space Port, Pembroke Mall, c.1983) high score was over 750k.)

Playing those old games with a modern console controller just doesn’t do it for me. It feels to me like I lose precision. One of these days I am going to invest in an expensive, high quality arcade joystick with usb connectivity.
yanknga@reddit
Exhilarated then hooked. I loved those games along with Galaga.

I like star castle better
Healthy-Theme8261@reddit
I recently played asteroids and I was terrible
thonnard42@reddit
Like I found Shangri-La, or Narnia!
Lanky_Comedian_3942@reddit
This is the coolest thing ever and technology will never top this.
East_Relationship722@reddit
To be fair, it never did.
Static-Age01@reddit
I learned the value of a quarter.
YummYummBumm@reddit
I mowed lawns with a push mower so I could play
Jgibbjr@reddit
Unfreaking real. Just a grin on my face from ear to ear elated and full adrenaline the first time I try started to figure out asteroids (and played it for more than the usual 30 seconds and crashing out)
Mr_Writes@reddit
Asteroids was frustrating because it tried to mimic how a craft moves in space.
R808T@reddit
Asteroids took the place of a pinball machine in the back of a dinner and I was in love.
5yb11-372@reddit
Surprised, enthralled, and then irritated as I couldn't afford another go. We had heard of the Space Invaders but seeing the machine for the first time in the bleary dawn in the waiting room to board a ferry for school trip to Boulogne was exciting. We crowded around, watched the bleating phalanxe of sprites marching across the screen.
Then we took turns losing our pocket money.
wheresbill@reddit
That was definitely a “what a time to be alive” era

I was too busy showing off my sweet disco skate moves

It was great

Pong was a mind blower to my very young self.
Flababulous@reddit
Felt like I was never going to have enough quarters.
cofclabman@reddit
The first one I played was space wars against my brother and it was really cool. Quickly ran out of quarters, though.
PrettyWorn_@reddit
Immediate anxiety
Temporary_View_3303@reddit
That was like…45 years ago. Who can remember that? 😂😂
Designer-Travel4785@reddit
No shit! I remember playing it, kinda. No way I'd remember the first time.
Grafakos@reddit
I was already pretty impressed the first time I played Pong on a cocktail table model. Granted, I was like 6 or 7 years old at the time.
Bathysphered@reddit
Frustrated! Those were very challenging games for people who had never experienced video games! lol
naryset@reddit
Disappointed. Spent so much time watching those machines do their demo loops and watching other people play, finally got a quarter to play it myself, and was dead in seconds. And where exactly was I supposed to get another quarter?
rbrumble@reddit
I felt like this was the future, I could see all our analog interfaces becoming screens.
jetpack324@reddit
Excited and frustrated that I died way too quickly.
CommunicationNew3745@reddit
Meh - it was 'ok' but for me, it was only a step or two above Pong; the ones that followed held much more appeal - Frogger, Donkey Kong, Mrs. Pac-Man . . .
thedeuce75@reddit
Short.
