Do you let your microwave finish?

Who else stops their microwave at 1-second? Letting it finish just seems absurd to me.

Who else stops their microwave at 1-second? Letting it finish just seems absurd to me.
VinylHighway@reddit
I got rid of my microwave a few years ago and installed a proper hood vent for the stove and never use one
Money-Mud912@reddit
Microwave?
bacchus213@reddit
No. I'm a selfish cooker.
eyecandynsx@reddit
I stop it with 1 second to go like I’m defusing a bomb in an action movie
Extension_Physics873@reddit
Once, and only once, I managed to hit the stop button exactly as it turned to zero, but before it reset the display to "remove food". Gold star to me.
lost_horizons@reddit
I played that game all the time in my youth. I was fairly successful at it, it would finish but I'd open it before the beep.
I now don't have a microwave so, alas, cannot test myself on it anymore.
skavenrot@reddit
Oh my god, I never realized it but that is exactly the satisfaction I get from it.
What_Up_82@reddit
Same here. If I miss it and it completes without stopping it at the 1 second mark, I have failed my mission.
cbih@reddit
Never. My microwave is into tantric useage
Repulsive_Web_3113@reddit
Only if she’s been a good girl.
Miriyum1031@reddit
I definitely stop it with a few seconds left… Mainly because I can’t stand the beeping noise
i-steal-forks@reddit
Mute button. Totally changed my microwave game.
LennyAteYourPizza@reddit
I don’t mind “a” beep, but I can’t stand the microwaves that continue the “I’m done” beeping cycle after I’ve already opened the door on the first beep. Like bruh, I know you’re done, that’s why I opened the damn door!!
FormidableMistress@reddit
My great aunt's giant microwave from the 70's had a dial. When it was done it dinged a little bell and that was it. I loved it. Now microwaves are trying to be as noisy as a Samsung washer.
ScientistAsHero@reddit
I'm like, "what the hell microwave, you got somewhere to be?"
Coffee_slothee@reddit
I hope you clear the timer after!! (Unexplainable OCD trigger!)
DigDugged@reddit
Hold down the "1" or "2" button on your microwave for a few seconds until it beeps, that should turn off all beeps.
classless_classic@reddit
Here we are in 2026 and we can’t change the beep or volume on a microwave.
Blackbird136@reddit
Yep. Have done this for decades.
RolandMT32@reddit
mykymyk@reddit
I hated the beep so much I googled my make and model of microwave and learned how to turn the bleeps and bloops off.
I cannot communicate to you how much of a quality of life improvement that was
BlueDuck600@reddit
A lot of times you can turn the beep off.
It's not always in the manual. I've done it accidentally before.
I figured out how to turn it back on online and now I wish I hadn't. I can't figure out how to turn it off again.
TheDoctor-Q42@reddit
Press and hold either 2 or 3 on the pad for a few seconds. That's typically how to turn it on or off.
DS3M@reddit
Came here to say 3 key on mine
BlueDuck600@reddit
I'll give that that a shot tomorrow. It's actually the microwave at work.
Suspicious_Mud_5855@reddit
Hold down 0.
New_Stats@reddit
Just Google it
BlueDuck600@reddit
I did, and it's not in the manual either. I don't know where I found it before.
I even asked Ai and nothing worked.
Miriyum1031@reddit
That’s so strange that you were able to find how to turn it back on, but not off again… that sounds super frustrating
gottarespondtothis@reddit
Yup. I’m so good at opening the door on the 1 second mark 😂
sailphish@reddit
My new microwave basically yells at me if i don’t get the food. It just keeps beeping. It’s so annoying. Of all the places to leave something, it’s just not a priority to get food immediately. It’s not like it’s cooking anymore.
PurpleCatBlues@reddit
Have you checked to see if you'r microwave has a silent mode? Most microwaves have the option to turn off the beep.
Miriyum1031@reddit
Oh my gosh… Honestly can’t believe I didn’t even think to check for something like that… However, our microwave has got to be at least 20 years old… So who knows, but I will certainly check it out! Thanks!
New_Stats@reddit
Mine's pretty old, it's got a silent mode
lastminutealways@reddit
lol I have my grandma’s microwave from around 1986. I think it’s finally giving out just this week.
Own_Grapefruit8839@reddit
It’s not really a new feature, you usually just hold one of the number buttons for a few seconds.
realitythreek@reddit
My kids turned mine off somehow and I have no idea how to turn it back on. I am my dad.
Narfubel@reddit
Mine does but let's out 2 loud shrieks to let me know silent mode is on 🙄
SineQuaNon001@reddit
Hold down the 8 key. On about 70% of microwaves it is a hidden mute feature.
mj16pr@reddit
My microwave has the most annoying beep and it keeps beeping until it’s opened
dontletyourcrownslip@reddit
Same.
jestr6@reddit
I do the same for the exact the same reason
jjmawaken@reddit
I do both
Bubbly_A_@reddit
always stop it early so i don't wake up the whole house
bkwrm79@reddit
I let it finish, unless I'm up in the morning before other people, then I'll hit 'stop' just as the first beep is about to sound.
But if I do decide to stop it early I always, always clear the remaining time. Only the truly lost, trying to let the world burn, would fail to do that much.
Celebratory_Drink@reddit
Got rid of my microwave years ago. I don’t miss it at all.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
Nope.
high_everyone@reddit
If it can’t properly cook me a burrito, it doesn’t deserve to get to finish.
Trixie1143@reddit
NEVER
Practically_Hip@reddit
Always hit Cancel with 2-3 seconds left. Then restart it.
lumiranswife@reddit
Edging it, every time. But I make sure to get consent.
SunVoltShock@reddit
When I put in 3:25, i want 3:25 worth of heat on it.
If one stops it before, CLEAR THE FUCKING TIMER!!!!!!
lastminutealways@reddit
The amount of times I clear the timer on the work microwaves, I swear I’m the only one who actually cares
Miz_momo82@reddit
One of my biggest pet peeves!
meredithedith0@reddit
I do this too. Pet peeve.
Dry-Discount-9426@reddit
Back when I worked in an office I used to press 7 on the microwave every time I went in the break room.
Listening to people discuss the mystery was always entertaining and taught me about my coworkers.
okieboat@reddit
My wife stops it at random times so often I can never tell if it's the time of day or time left. It's gotten to the point that I put in random numbers just for shits and giggles.
nudave@reddit
A constant source of tension between me and my wife. I am with you. The number of times I go to put something in the microwave only to see that there’s 12 seconds left on it is too damn high.
V0nH30n@reddit
I'd put it for 3:26, but i always clear the last second
digitaljedi42@reddit
THANK YOU! Leaving time on the microwave is worthy of capital punishment.
Aware_Policy_9174@reddit
Yeah I basically hit the time I want. But my bf will just hit the 30s button a few times and then open it when he thinks it’s done and then leave the remaining time. It drives me up the wall, especially when I don’t realize because I just think it’s the clock so I can’t figure out why it’s not working.
Miriyum1031@reddit
After stopping it, I definitely clear the timer… Otherwise it feels unfinished😂
CheerfullyCursed@reddit
I’m on your team.
cellshock7@reddit
If it's one of those infernal; microwaves where it's gonna beep 4 times at the end even if you open the door then heck yeah, I'll stop it at 1. Thankfully, haven't had one like that in a long while.
ZeusBruce@reddit
Late 90s "stop the pizza rolls at 1 second so the parents don't wake up" crew
buggerthis@reddit
OMG yes. Which has now become stop the microwave at 1 second so the kids don't wake up lol
Shep9882@reddit
Do you press the add 30 seconds until you get the time you want?
TheLastBoat@reddit
Nope. I don’t like things beeping.
Netflixandmeal@reddit
Yes. Mine beeps forever and won’t stop no matter what you do.
Hillbillygeek1981@reddit
Microwave edging as a habit is understandable, I hate most alarm sounds too. Had a coworker that set every microwave he used to 99 minutes just so he could mash one button and stand there and watch till he thought his food was done. Set our microwave at work on fire once and his own at home twice and still hasn't dropped the habit.
Ws6fiend@reddit
Yes. Always.
Just so you know, you should always press cancel or stop prior to opening the microwave. There are safety circuits to protect you from the magnetron staying on when you open the door while it's working, but best practice is always to press cancel or stop first.
I mean do you really want to trust the safety switches on a device that can cost as low as 50 bucks(sometimes much lower).
Savingskitty@reddit
I don’t because things usually need to sit for a bit after they’re done.
1995droptopz@reddit
I give my microwave blue balls
limelight022@reddit
I do not want to hear it beep 5 times. Absolutely not.
NorthernLolal@reddit
What microwave
solaluna451@reddit
people always think it's so weird but I haven't had one in so long I don't miss it
AbleDanger12@reddit
Well it would be rude not to.
RolandMT32@reddit
When heating things with microwave instructions, I feel like I should let it finish. But when heating other things, sometimes I stop it early (around 1 second).
72scott72@reddit
I always stop it with 1 second. I hate that stupid beep.
ccx941@reddit
No I don’t edge my microwave. I politely let it finish.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
Always stop with 1 second to go. This is a society.
rayray1927@reddit
Now do you press stop or just pull the door open? I know a guy who thinks you’ll get cancer by opening the door when it’s running.
Cephalopod_Dropbear@reddit
For fear of waking mom up at 2am when I was microwaving pizza rolls and hot pockets, I believe I developed a habit out of fear…
That thing stops at :01
blackcurrents78@reddit
Yes because I turned all the beeps off.
Meatloaf_Mondai@reddit
Yes due to multitasking other things out in the kitchen.
Antron_RS@reddit
No way.
Therealfern1@reddit
“He stopped short?! That’s my move”
SuchFalcon7223@reddit
Hell nah
NoContextCarl@reddit
I always let her finish.
Possible-Tangelo9344@reddit
No, I like to edge it
YourGuyK@reddit
I don't stand next to my microwave while it's cooking for the most part, so yes.
luxtabula@reddit
No, it's never satisfied and has other partners it cooks for that let it finish.
intransit412@reddit
Only if I leave the room.
The_best_is_yet@reddit
no, and i can't stand finding the microwave with a few seconds left. at least clear it!
ThisIsACompanyCar@reddit
Fuck those beeps at the end.
IronbAllsmcginty78@reddit
Never
MisRandomness@reddit
There’s usually a secret button sequence that turns off all sounds.
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
So many people never took 20 seconds to learn how to put their microwaves into silent mode. Crazy.
jackfaire@reddit
I let it finish. I don't care if others don't but please for the love of god then clear the timer and shut the damn door.
bshr49@reddit
Why is it absurd? If you want it to cook for 1 second less, why not just enter what you want your cook time to be?
scrotanimus@reddit
Don’t be a selfish lover.
RetroBerner@reddit
No, my microwave isn't loud enough to annoy me that mich
spderweb@reddit
Depends if I'm in the room with it or not.
AlwaysAGroomsman@reddit
Of course I do. It's not like I'm married to it.
TheVonSolo@reddit
avoozl42@reddit
Nice
Bastard1066@reddit
I don't even stop it, I just yank the door open.
yukonman27@reddit
Gotta diffuse the bomb
CokBlockinWinger@reddit
Always. No one can call me a selfish cook.
odin_the_wiggler@reddit
tulips_onthe_summit@reddit
Yes, but I hate it when I do. I try not to, but I get distracted. Yes, in only 30 seconds.
javarunner@reddit
hell no.
Starbreiz@reddit
I do this and then I never reset the time and it drives my dad up a wall and it's a little bit funny
bradfo83@reddit
Of course. No need to give the microwave blue balls.
Lower-Tomatillo-9513@reddit
I die a little inside every time my microwave beeps.
SlackerDS5@reddit
I stop it with one second less.
But I also hit clear afterwards? Because I’m not a monster like some people.
avoozl42@reddit
Every single time and I usually let it sit for a while because I have shit to do
CaptShrek13@reddit
Reheat button and walk away. Maybe I'll hear the beep from the other room, but I'm definitely not sitting there watching the timer.
humanist-misanthrope@reddit
More so my air fryer than my microwave, but yes, I make sure to stop it before it hits zero. I’m the hero of my own story!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I have the same ocd
Li-RM35M4419@reddit
I don’t have a rule for microwave use
Boo-Boo97@reddit
My microwave is 12ish years old and beeps for maybe 3 seconds, doesn't bother me. The newer microwaves that keep going off every 30 seconds till you open the door are obnoxious.
DieAloneWith72Cats@reddit
You already know the answer if you are the parent of young ones….hell no, let those demons stay asleep PLEASE
i-hoatzin@reddit
Never. I hate the little bell.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
Yes, because I've usually got 5 other things I'm dealing with and microwave edging isn't something I worry about.
Hairy_Ad4969@reddit
Mine is an LG and it plays the tune to “Show Me the Way” by Styx from 1990.
For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why this song that I haven’t heard in decades kept getting stuck in my head. The microwave was playing it every time it stopped.
V0nH30n@reddit
Hell no. I pop it at 1 sec left.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
Me, most of the time. Ain't got time for the whole cycle!
Jets237@reddit
NEVER, always stop at 1 second.
The beep isn’t even that annoying, just seems right
FUWS@reddit
I hate to hear the beep at zero so I do this.
I also like to end on a round number like 20 or 30 at the gas pump ( releasing the gas trigger on the first try to hit 00).
Vectors2_Final@reddit
Absolutely not.
emptybeetoo@reddit
I sometimes stop it early, partly because the only way I know how to start my microwave is by pushing the “add 30 seconds” button
SB4_Camaro@reddit
I try to catch on 0
snoopmt1@reddit
You'll overcook your food if you do
MrPlowThatsTheName@reddit
Any time it wants 🥵
Redhddgull@reddit
I don’t let it finish, because mine will insist on doing ALL its beeps regardless of me opening the door with the first one.
PiginthePen@reddit
Is it late at night and am I making poor choices?
sarithe@reddit
I let it finish because I'm not in the kitchen when it goes off. I put stuff in the microwave and walk away. Generally to attempt to find something to watch while eating.
Ornamental_oriental@reddit
Nope, not for some pizza rolls I won’t ! Has to be 1 second left so I don’t hear the beep.
tky@reddit
I set it using multiple, usually more than necessary mashes of the 0:30 button and I stop it before it reaches zero. I am ungovernable.
jodytrees@reddit
Nope. Got rid of mine 15 years ago. Toaster ovens are way better
inabighat@reddit
My microwave always finishes first. Sometimes more than once
Training-Ninja-412@reddit
Absolutely not.
It would ruin the rest of my day
lastminutealways@reddit
My ADHD forgets it’s running until it beeps, even for like 30 seconds. So not usually.
Automatic-Nature6025@reddit
Never! Those last few seconds are poison!
Coakis@reddit
People really out here blue balling their microwaves?
Where_Is_Bucky@reddit
I don’t care what you do as long as you clear the microwave after. Nothing makes me irrationally madder than trying to use the microwave and someone leaving time on it! 😡
Remaining-upbeat@reddit
Only inside me .
Kurigunde@reddit
No, I can’t stand the beeping sound when it finishes.
tehSchultz@reddit
the microwave I grew up with, which was older than I was actually had a zero on it so I always tried to stop it on the zero. I don't even use a microwave now
Do_it_My_Way-79@reddit
It used to be if you opened the door while it was still running you ran the risk of being exposed to dangerous microwave radiation.
That’s the lie I was told anyway. I never broke the habit from childhood of waiting until the final beep to open a microwave.
If I do end a microwave early, I still will push stop & wait a few seconds before opening the door.
ChristyLovesGuitars@reddit
Yes. It makes me crazy to not have the ding or little tune when it’s done.
dadof364@reddit
Stop early the beep drives the dog nuts.
TexasRN1@reddit
Repairman told me once that opening the door without stopping the microwave causes problems. So now I always let it finish or press cancel before opening the door.
snorday@reddit
Never, and I'll never reset it to 0! Goodies never say die!
Seriously though, this along with never being capable of closing the silverware drawer the whole way may be the reason my husband finally divorces me. I'm just going to see where the chips fall, cause I'm for sure not able to change these "quirks". 🤷🏻♀️
playfulwarning@reddit
Just did that! I hate that fucking beep with a passion😅
Key_Permission_3351@reddit
I push the stop button right as it ends because it ceases the horrible noise immediately.
BlueDuck600@reddit
Only after I give it permission.
That's how I keep my food spicy.
mtmtnmike@reddit
I used to. Then I had a high school kid come into my class to microwave something and he stopped it before it beeped and he called it edging the microwave. I can’t stop it early anymore.
ObligationSome905@reddit
Sounds like my prom night
viridiansoul@reddit
Not a chance in hell.
Majestic-Citron7578@reddit
PSN-Colinp42@reddit
Yes, but I am very deliberate about my times. Like why 60 seconds? I’m much more likely to do 57.
PurpleCatBlues@reddit
Isn't that the proper etiquette?
But seriously, I usually let it end cooking and try opening the door immediately when I hear the "beep" (unless it's something you're supposed to leave in the microwave for an extra minute or so). Also, don't most microwaves have the option to turn off the beep?
pearshapedkitty@reddit
Nope, I stop it at 11 seconds if I can and that means I’m gonna have a good day. It also drives my husband crazy so Win Win
LanguidLandscape@reddit
Never as the beep is exceedingly annoying. This is a total failure by manufacturers as they could have ANY sound play–a chime, music, birdsong, farts… we’ve only recently seen washing machines make the jump to pleasant sounds, perhaps microwave manufacturers could hire a designer with a clue.
MartialBob@reddit
Depends on if I'm in the room
TheMeticulousNinja@reddit
I let it finish. I go do other things and wait for it
DiaDeLosMuebles@reddit
I look at it like the beeping is to alert me in case I’m not paying attention. If I’m paying attention I don’t need the alert.
Miriyum1031@reddit
Yeah, good point… There have been several times where I’ve started the microwave to warm up coffee and forgot about it even despite the beeping! However, if I remain in the kitchen, then I stop it
