Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9700X For 1440p Gaming Build

I am planning a new 1440p gaming PC with RTX 5070 or 5080 and I am deciding between Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X for the CPU. My budget is around 1600 dollars total.
The Ryzen 5 is cheaper and should handle gaming fine but the Ryzen 7 offers more cores for future proofing and multitasking like streaming or light editing.
I mostly play AAA games and competitive titles. Will the extra cores make a noticeable difference at 1440p or is the Ryzen 5 enough to save money?

2 extra cores don't usually make much difference in gaming, grab the 9600x and grab a 9p70 non xt if around the price of the 5070, has simular RT and upscaling capabilities and has more vram along with better raster performance.

I think the bigger issue is that you're not going to be able to fit everything you want into your budget. The RTX 5080 costs about $1200-1300 all by itself. So, you are likely going to have to go with the cheaper CPU simply due to cost.

I think 5080 is leaning into 4K territory, 5070 is probably the better fit for OP.

I wouldn't go above 5070 ti/9070 xt tbqh.

Even the 5070 is going to push OP's budget and force compromises elsewhere.

Really? 5070 is like 650-750 dollars equivalent where I am. Seems enough

And 32gb of ram is $400-450 so that’s $1,200 with no cpu, mootherboard, psu, storage, or case

It all depends on where OP lives and how much the rest of the parts cost. That's why I suggested that OP look into the total price of the PC and what actually fits their budget.
ProZapz@reddit
Yeah fair enough, it’s a rough time to be building a pc lol.

Give it enough time and yes the extra cores should matter. However by the time a 9600x holds you back zen 6 should be out and discounted on that platform.

I'm running a 9600x with a 5070 at 1440p and haven't had issues. CP2077 runs fantastic, though multi frame gen is needed for pathtracing, literally the only game I haven't been able to max out graphics wise. Otherwise, every other AAA I've played has had zero issues. That is: FH5 ; RDR2 ; HorizonFW ; Death Stranding ; KCD2 etc.
My build ended up at around 1700eur (before the ram skyrocketed) so I highly doubt you'd be able to fit a pc with a 5080 in your current budget, thought a 5080 is miles better than a 5070.

9600 will be fine, I use a 7600 and 9060xt for one of my pc. 5070 will do the job, but a ti would obviously be better. I’m happy with my 9060xt setup, I only use it every other weekend. My main gaming pc has a 9070xt, but also ultra wide so even it has a hard time getting high fps sometimes.

There is no reason to get the 9700x imo. It's barely better than the ryzen 7700/9600x specially at 1440p but costs like 80 bucks more (at least here). Either get the 9600x or if you want 8 cores go for the 7700 (they are both equal in price here). Before you get the 9700x you should spend a tiny bit more and get the 7800x3D if you play competitive anyways. Tldr: 7700/9600x and spend the saved money on something else or get the 7800x3D.

You could buy a 5080 and a stick of ram for that budget fyi. Even the 5070 build will be tight unless you have a microcenter nearby

I use a 9600x and a 9070xt on a 1440p ultrawide and it’s great.
ProZapz@reddit
You kinda answered the question urself, the extra cores is only useful if you plan to have multiple things open or you do work that needs more cores. Otherwise 9600x is perfectly fine and both will be basically identical gaming performance wise

From what I've seen its like a 10 fps difference at most.
