Feeling slow/behind

Im a pre-solo student and was feeling really excited about my progress. Im at abt 13 hrs and finally got a landing without any assistance. I was really close like a month ago but I got sick for 2 weeks and basically had to start over again. I was super excited and posted the video to my Instagram, and someone from my high school so is also working towards his ppl (i think hes doing xcs rn) kinda just started hating on me š like okay sure I wasnt tracking centerline that well and was a little high but srsly š this guy brags that his instructor didn't touch the controls after his 3rd lesson, and that his first solo was in 25G35 winds like idk
I know everyone goes at their own pace, and honestly I'm really happy with my progress considering I'm a full time college student and working full time, I'm just kinda looking for some validation that I shouldn't be taking this guy too seriously, bc hes like the only person ik thats also doing flight training and im getting p discouraged
Pies-aviator1@reddit
25G35? This guy do his first solo in a king air or something? Lmao heās full of shit dude.
Mach_v_manchild@reddit
Sick! Sounds like you're exactly where you should be! Landing a plane without assistance is awesome! Hopefully you get to solo soon. Don't compare yourself to what people post online. Its not representative. Keep doing what you're doing, you'll get there.
KITTYONFYRE@reddit
literally just block that kid man. there's no benefit to 'clapping back', I promise. it doesn't make you feel better. say "damn bro that was a pretty mean thing to say" and just block him.
scottyh214@reddit
Some people solo at 5 hours. Some at 50. Who cares? Youāre doing just fine.
HateJobLoveManU@reddit
This is such a high school post
AlarmingMajor1499@reddit
Man iām at close to 90 hours signed off for my private check ride and sometimes I still botch a landing or an approach here and there and wonder how the hell Iām even signed off for a check ride.. It takes time but eventually it will click. Also your buddy is full of shit, he did NOT solo in 25G35 winds. Remember, comparison is the thief of joy. Your time will come to celebrate your wins.
awemeter@reddit
That guy is trying to put you down because you started doing the thing he thinks makes him ācoolā in the eyes of the rest of the school. Ignore the noise. Heās just scared he will lose his cool kid status š
bailaowai@reddit
Youāll get there my dude. Iāve been a pilot for going on 30 years and I just watched the whole PPL process through the eyes of my 17yo daughter. It took her a little over 100 hrs. I initially thought sheād get there faster than that - sheās been a passenger in the right seat of my SE plane since she we a little bitty kid - but I saw her putting in the work and I know she was trying super hard, and Iām proud she accomplished it. Everyone goes at a pace that works for them.
Admirable-Yogurt9078@reddit
Progression is not linear. Go at your own pace, not others. Donāt listen to twats
bailaowai@reddit
This.
olek2012@reddit
Youāre learning to do something difficult. Flying isnāt natural or intuitive for humans. Learning difficult things takes time and work. You wonāt always get it right, thatās an important part of learning. Your instructor knows the process and theyāre the ones you should be listening to. People learn at different rates and there is no one right or better path.
Enjoy the learning for learnings sake. What a privilege it is to be able to learn to fly. If youāre having fun and progressing then thatās a win in my book
KCPilot17@reddit
Exhibit A of how social media is ruining kids.
Who cares man? You're fine.
DonWop1@reddit
25g35? No shot
UnfortunateSnort12@reddit
The other dude was definitely lying, but this shit isnāt new. So many people bragged about how few hours it took the to solo, get their private, etc. this was before social media. Social media has just made it easier.
Also, while I wish I had a video of my solo, the tech wasnāt there unless I mounted a camcorder or something, and I didnāt have that kind of money. So the only person who could judge me was meā¦. And judge myself harshly I did.
StageMajestic613@reddit
Yep, my school explicitly bans any sort or video recording and photos.
Zestyclose_Duck_9359@reddit
The fact that you came back after two weeks off and landed the plane yourself says more about you than any wind component brag ever could setbacks are actually where pilots are made, and you just proved you've got that part figured out at 13 hours.
alpinewander12@reddit
I landed no assistance on my discovery flight. I solo at 21 hours, donāt worry about the number.
yeahgoestheusername@reddit
Not always better to learn faster. Learning well is most important.

This is an article written by a friend of mine that may help your mental state when you feel that you aren't picking things up about flying fast enough. The article spoke to me, and I hope it is helpful to others as well!

Keep the cameras at home and focus on your training. That kid is lying to you about his experience. If heās not then his instructor should have his license revoked for gross incompetence. He is putting his students at very high risk putting them out in conditions like that. I highly doubt thatās a true statement from the kid. I hope.
Either way, you should be focused on your training. Not social media content. Ask TNFlygirl how that type of mentality worked out for her. You wonāt get an answer because that mentality killed her. Donāt be like that. Stay alive and work on your skills and tell that other kid to kick rocks.
SternM90@reddit
I felt behind until about 50 hours after PPL. Then I started instrument and it started all over. Then commercial and it started all over. Then rotary wing and it started all over. Now at my first 121 and feel like an imposter all over.
Through this, chair flying, excellence/work in ground knowledge, and admitting weaknesses early have often carried me. Donāt stress too much, just make every flight a bit better than the last.
Schwalbe262Guy@reddit

Which training airplane is flying in those winds? Unless the winds were directly down runway heading heās bullshitting. Even if it was straight down runway heading if heās soloing in that; his flight instructor might hate the guy and is willing to risk it all to stop working with him.
Donāt let some clown on social media get in your head.

Heās absolutely full of shit that he soloed in those wind conditions, I never let my students solo in those conditions ever. Block him and move on, everyone moves at their own pace and youāre doing just fine. For what itās worth, everyone struggles with landings initially and then for whatever reason at different hour marks, it just clicks and students donāt typically need help with the controls when landing.
Keep your head up, enjoy the process and make friends with other local students to get encouragement from.
bigbadcrusher@reddit
Iām signed off for my commercial checkride and Iād struggle to justify 15G25 solo (dealt with it this morning and it was DISGUSTING in a 172), let alone when I was a 20 hr private student
burnheartmusic@reddit
Ya thatās BS. No CFI is sending anyone up in G35, ESPECIALLY on a first solo. Heās talking shit. Solo when youāre ready and can do a lesson of landings without the CFI doing anything.
Also practice for the things that could go wrong. Went up the other day to see how the winds were to maybe release a student for solo and the flaps would not go down. So, can you also do a no flap landing and have some experience with it? Because things happen in the air. Also sent a student up solo yesterday and they almost had to shut down the airspace. What would you do in that case?
BarnackIIIF@reddit
>"...this guy brags that his instructor didn't touch the controls after his 3rd lesson, and that his first solo was in 25G35 winds like idk"
I'm calling bullshit. Is it possible? Sure. But it's probably...bullshit.
R5Jockey@reddit
Zero chance your buddy did his first solo at 25G35. ZERO.
Saltyspaceballs@reddit
Iād be concentrating damn hard landing a 250 ton jet at 25G35⦠far less a single engine piston aircraft. Your friend is full of shit and youāre doing great, keep up the hard work and youāll get there!
AtiumMist@reddit
Bro got signed off on his 3rd hour for 25g35 damn
ResponsibilityOld164@reddit
Heās totally lying lol. Call him a clown. No one is soloing in 25G35. Most actual pilots wouldnāt go out in that recreationallyā¦.
you-suck-haters@reddit
There are only two stages of training where you should feel ok going slow. Pre solo, and CFI training.
Presolo, they want to ensure you are extremely capable and proficient in the aircraft. Once you get up there, all the resources available come from you. Your judgement and knowledge and skill need to be not just passable, but safe.

Comparison is the thief of joy.
Shit takes what it takes.
WoodDragonIT@reddit
When it comes to landings it's about how many, not about hours. Somewhere between 50 and 100 landings is where it clicks for most students. Remember, you're bringing together all your skills while dealing with winds and learning the correct sight picture. Good landings always start with a stable approach on final. Make sure you're trimmed properly. Trust me, you'll get it.
TxAggieMike@reddit
Comparison of yourself to others is the thief of joy.
So stop it. Your milestones will happen in due time and you will celebrate when they happen.
If you wish to solo very soon, then work hard on demonstrating proper skills and ADM.
Once your instructor determines youāre a safe pilot and the conditions of the day are also safe, you will be allowed to solo.
faidalezzi@reddit
Bro you gotta threaten to beat the fuck outta him, if you let people do this to you you would never feel confident or feel that you are a man don't let tgese situations happen without a strong reaction.
Serious_Treacle6421@reddit
Youāre good dude, I didnāt solo until 16hr and a friend of mine didnāt solo until 20hrs. And youāre in school which can add some time to your personal timeline. That kids an ass, your own success is more important than his.
Affectionate-Let-979@reddit
You can choose to lie like him; people say exactly what they want on social media. Someone who brags like that is hiding something. They're either a liar or have a serious complex. Don't compare yourself; you have no idea what the situation is really like.
Btw,Ā I have 7 hours of flight time, and I've never even landed with assistance. I don't know if my instructor is too cautious or if I'm just too incompetent, but I've decided not to overthink it, try to fly as much as possible, review my lessons, and we'll see. I trust my instructor; we can't control everything, we have to manage our frustration and our ego.
Classic-Common-4351@reddit
If the CFI let a student pilot solo at 25G35, he needs to go, and stop comparing yourself with others everyone has a different learning curve.
pattern_altitude@reddit
That guy is a dick. He's definitely exaggerating. Who gives a fuck what he says?
You're 13 hours into doing something that really doesn't correlate with anything else you've ever done, of course it's going to take time to get good. Chill. It all happens for a reason.
bigbadcrusher@reddit
This. The kid I went to HS with who was getting his license then was always bragging about it. I donāt even know if he actually got his license and you canāt find his name anywhere in the airmen registry.
At the end of the day, everyoneās circumstances are different. The fact heās posting that stuff tells me heās a little threatened that he wonāt have the bragging points he thought he would when he started
