2009 was the last time we had professional photos taken.
JtotheC23@reddit
Formal family photos with a professional at a studio? Once, and it was when I was at most 18 months old, so I have no memory of it (the photo just hung in the hallway most of my childhood. Until I was about 5 or so, my mom would take my sister and I every once in a while, but that was pretty much it.
LingJules@reddit
We did it exactly once when I was a child in the 80s. I have never done it with my family.
FataMorganaForReal@reddit
It was much more popular before digital cameras.
bgjj04@reddit
I perceive them to be more popular today than when I was growing up in the 80s/90s.
Most family photos I see during that era were from Olan Mills whenever their rotation at a family member's church came around.
Today, I see regular annual fall and holiday/Christmas professional shoots of multiple friends' families.
NMS-KTG@reddit
I feel it's more of an upper middle class thing tho? None of the working or middle class families ik do that, just the ones with McMansions
GreenBeanTM@reddit
And it dropped off even more once phones got decent cameras
Jass0602@reddit
Honestly, this is probably a bad choice of words for American culture… I would say a family portrait 😉 when I was growing up before digital cameras, we would go every few years in my childhood (but I was also cute back then 😂) . Since digital cameras became cheap, we’ve gone professionally once that I can recall. It was kinda a nightmare. But still fun and we still copies in pretty much every house. But this was our entire family- like 17 of us. Haha.
agravain@reddit
we did it once when I was a kid in the 70s.
blondechick80@reddit
Lmao. A "family shooting" is not the correct phrasing, and made me laugh. However, I know exactly what you mean.
A photo shoot or family portrait is more the words you're looking for.
It varies family to family as they can be expensive. Typically, I would say when a new child is born, and then maybe 5 or 10 yrs later. I suppose if your family is wealthy then frequency increases.
We haven't had a professional family photo in a very long time. 20 years I'd say. We just have a friend with a camera.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
I see, a family shooting is what we call in German.
jvc1011@reddit
PS In case this is true in German (as it is in French and Spanish) - there is no clothing in English called “a smoking.” Foreign speakers are usually referring to what we call “a tuxedo.” I think it comes from the idea of a smoking jacket, which is an obsolete item of clothing.
If you say the word “smoking,” we expect that you are talking about actual smoke.
HottestestestMess@reddit
I do really enjoy the spelling of it in Spanish, though: esmoquin.
I’m not sure the clothing item is obsolete, just out of fashion.
jvc1011@reddit
I know you think of this as the English word, but really it’s borrowed and repurposed vocabulary, which makes it German. We consider words like “ketchup” and “robot” to be English. Borrowing and repurposing is how language develops and why it’s so cool. Be proud of your language for its flexibility in adapting words!
La_noche_azul@reddit
Never or once, I had family who used to send professional family photos every Christmas, it seems kinda odd now
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Interesting, I go to a shooting every few years to get professional photos in Germany as they are used on CVs.
o93mink@reddit
Attaching a photo to a CV would be so wildly unprofessional in America as to render you immediately unhireable and maybe ridiculed out of an entire industry.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
I see, you wouldn't get hired in Germany without one on your CV.
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
...what does the photo have to do with their ability to do the job? That's so weird.
HottestestestMess@reddit
Might be a good Q for r/askagerman 😉
La_noche_azul@reddit
That’s wild, as a hiring manager myself that wouldn’t do anything but lead directly to discrimination.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Possibly but almost every CV has it on in Germany, so it's important here to go to a professional shooting to get a good photo for it.
autumnfire1414@reddit
My close friend married a german and moved to Germany for a while. This was one of the things he found so weird. The only time you would submit a picture here is if your an actor/model.
Jclo9617@reddit
Wild. I think it's literally a crime in the US for a company to require you to include your picture with your resume unless the job is acting or modeling.
mama_ste@reddit
I’ve seen it. But specific to govt jobs/uniformed service and usually high profile. I think they mainly want to ensure you wear the uniform well (ie aren’t to schlubby).
la-anah@reddit
Only actors and models include photos with resumes in the US.
benkatejackwin@reddit
Photos are typically not used on CVs/resumes here, as they reveal information about you that could lead to discrimination (race, age, gender, attractiveness--although some of these can be revealed in more subtle ways, such as name, activities, etc.).
jvc1011@reddit
We did this last year with our kids and honestly, it was fabulous. We hired a photographer though, and went to a park. We did not go to a shop or a mall.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Going to a place and getting a professional to take pictures? I would say rare/maybe once?
Getting pictures together at family gatherings? Very common
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Interesting, my family went to a family shooting once a year when I was growing up.
la-anah@reddit
Honestly, your continued use of the term "family shooting" is wild. It's a "photo shoot." Not a shooting. A shooting involves guns.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Here's a photo of a german photo store where it's called that https://i.redd.it/pp3yuqcaxt0b1.jpg
ExplanationNo8603@reddit
Honestly I love this and laughing harder then I should be. Good price though, here a family shooting like that would coast 25-life
HottestestestMess@reddit
🤣
la-anah@reddit
Cool. But since you didn't post the rest of your text in German, I'm not sure why you are using the German term for a photo shoot. It's not an English term, it is a German term based on borrowed and altered English.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Family Shooting is english so I thought that was the right word for it. In German it's a Familienshooting if we don't use the english term for it.
amethystalien6@reddit
It’s no big deal. I totally understood what you meant and so did everyone else.
jh789-2@reddit
I don’t know why everyone is being rude. Unfortunately we have a problem on our country with all kinds of mass shootings and the phrase you are using sounds like that
It is better to say “photo shoot” or “sitting with a photographer “
SaintJimmy1@reddit
The average American who isn’t a pedantic dweeb would be able to use context to understand what you’re saying.
Landwarrior5150@reddit
It’s not even really about pedantry most of the time, some people just use this sub as “TrashTalkAForeigner” any possible chance they get.
la-anah@reddit
Well, now you know. It is not the English term for it. In English, a "family shooting" is when your whole family is killed.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
My man. This is /r/askanamerican where foreigners come to ask questions. Almost all odd phrasing or grammar is explained by language barrier.
Please don’t make a big deal about it. No one cares for pedantry while talking with foreigners asking questions in a second language… especially the mod team… if youse know what I’m sayin’.
Landwarrior5150@reddit
I can’t even imagine the backlash the regulars on this sub would give OP if they actually did post in German. I actually think they got off light with their unusual translation in comparison to that.
laserdollars420@reddit
They obviously didn't realize that wasn't the English term, go easy on them. They've been informed and now they know.
Free-Sherbet2206@reddit
We believe you, but this isn’t the ask a German sub, so might want to update your language.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Which is funny because some of my family has done photo shoots while family shooting.
They like hunting, what can I say.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Where are you from?
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Germany
SabresBills69@reddit
when I was a kid it was common to go to a place to get amily photos done. you can get them done at shopping malls and department stores. many times these woukd be done around holidays.
its also common to get school photos done on a specific day/ week at school they would do class pictures of both the class and individual.
today with cameras in your cell phone getting pro pictures done as dropped. now it’s still with school and for special occasions like a wedding.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Culturally speaking, we'll get real time photos taken of us by asking a stranger to take the picture for us. Usually during holiday celebrations or vacations
faithandchance@reddit
“family shooting” sounds horrific. i’d call it a photshoot, shoot for short. the term shooting is pretty exclusively used when people have been massacred by a gun.
z44212@reddit
It was ask the rage in 1974.
theryman@reddit
It definitely depends on the family. I'd agree that most families do it rarely. Unfortunately my family does it at least once a year lol. Usually in the fall, sometimes christmas themed. This year it will be at the beach.
Derminac@reddit
Yeah exactly. Especially with smartphone cameras nowadays, we can have an entire photoshoot for free instantaneously.
FedeFofo@reddit
When I was young we got professional photos taken every so often (1-2 years) but as I got older we didn't get them taken that often anymore
nettenette1@reddit
Like a murder suicide? Too often. I know two friends personally murdered by their SO/husband.
Brennisth@reddit
My parents' church does it annually for the church album, usually at the opposite point of the year from school photos. Dad still nags us to come down for it, even though we're well into our 40s/50s. Before the church started doing it, we went to Sears once a year to have it done.
Measurex2@reddit
We book a session with a photographer every year. We started when our first was born and our last is six. They change so much every year and the photographer we use is so good at getting their personalities on film.
Im sure we'll slow down when they're older but I love the memories.
Playful-Business7457@reddit
People get it at least once a year where I am in DFW
gotellmeagain@reddit
If you have children, especially young children, I think it’s more common, I know a lot of families that go a couple of times a year. Babies and young children change a lot within a year and so that’s why I think it’s more common. Photography is a booming business in the United States.
zoppaTheDim@reddit
I haven’t seen a place that does this since Sears closed.
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
In my part of the U.S. people only use professional photographers for milestone occasions. Weddings, family reunions, and maybe adopting a child?
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Used to be more popular before the rise of infinite high resolution cameras everywhere. Now it’s like a 0-3 times ever type of thing.
School photos have stubbornly persisted although I think they are kind of a scam.
We have lucked out because my dad is a gear head and really dedicated hobbyist photographer. He probably could run a photo studio tomorrow if needed. So we get really good group photos at every family gathering.
I have very good equipment and know my way around photography so I’m no slouch but nowhere near my dad’s level.
The biggest difference is that while my dad and I both know lighting theory. He has all the practical equipment and I’m mostly just shooting with a flash or two and natural light. He knows how to light a scene. I just sort of make it better than your average point and click software on a phone.
autumnfire1414@reddit
Family photo shoots (not shootings) were much more common decades ago. My family used to go every year or two when I was little. We got one done once when I was in college (late 90s/early 2000s) but I dont know anyone that has had one recently.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
Most families will take a few family photos when they have a family reunion. So that depends on how often their family has reunions. My family does a family reunion every summer, but every 4-5 years we do a big reunion with extended family
PuzzledKumquat@reddit
Only on a cruise where photographers are everywhere.
hotlettucediahrrea@reddit
My family? Maybe 3 times in my life. My friend’s family? Annually.
oevadle@reddit
Back in the day when Sears had a photographer we would go every 2-3 years. When department stores stopped offering the service, back in the nineties, we stopped getting them done.
jvc1011@reddit
We went to JCPenney last month and got it done, but it was for a one-time family milestone plus relatives were in from the other coast. So it still exists in malls! Just not at Sears (RIP).
oevadle@reddit
What's a mall? /s
HoneyxClovers_@reddit
2005 baby, I’ve done it twice growing up. Now, just in-time family photos!
Vegetable-Star-5833@reddit
I have gone 2 times in my life, once with my sister and 2 dogs as a present for my mom and a second time with my sister and dad as a present for my grandparents
ForestOranges@reddit
Lol “family shooting.” This is not how we say it in America even if it’s a term in Germany. But to answer your question my family only did this once, but other families might do this yearly for Christmas photos. Putting a picture on résumé/CV is wildly unprofessional and inappropriate in the US unless you’re applying for a modeling or acting job. A photo could lead to discrimination based on age, gender, race, etc. even if your name implies some of those.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
If you don't have one in Germany from a professional shooting at a photo studio they will just throw away the CV without reading it.
ForestOranges@reddit
I honestly wonder if countries that require pictures subconsciously discriminate. You don’t need to see what a person looks like to see if they’re worth an interview? In the US they’ve done studies on this and people with “black” names get less call backs for jobs than applicants with “white” sounding names even if they have the same qualifications.
We often have age discrimination against older applicants. Adding pictures to the mix would just make it worse here. For women that work in male dominated fields, if they have a gender neutral name (Sam, Robin, Avery, Morgan, etc) they may find it easier to get interviews
Free-Sherbet2206@reddit
I don’t think it’s subconscious, I think it’s intentional for discrimination. There’s no other reason for it
N_Huq@reddit
Assuming you mean at a photo studio, some families never do, some get holiday season photos every year, some do photos for milestones like birthdays or pregnancies
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
Yes of course, that's what a shooting is.
Free-Sherbet2206@reddit
That’s not what a shooting is in the US…
IsopodKey2040@reddit
it's called a "photoshoot" here, not a shooting
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
I see in Germany we either use English and call it a Family shooting or german and then it's a Familienshooting.
IsopodKey2040@reddit
It's okay. Just thought I'd explain why you are going to get confused/sarcastic comments. 😄
Designer_Release_789@reddit
Heh, in America “a shooting” is generally something quite different — we even have a special category of murderer called “family annihilator” (and those crimes frequently involve guns, since they’re such an efficient means of murdering multiple people in rapid succession)
GreenBeanTM@reddit
A shooting is something very different here.
Visions_of_Gideon@reddit
A “shooting” in American English usually refers to a violent act involving a gun. What you’re talking about is usually called a “photo shoot” or photo session. I’ve never heard anyone use the phrase “shooting” when talking about photos being taken.
DrBlankslate@reddit
Not often anymore. It's just not necessary.
maimou1@reddit
We did this once in the early 70s. I was about 10,sis 12, bro 15. By the time we reached young adulthood we pretty much hated and distrusted each other.
flora_poste_@reddit
We never did that. But then, my parents weren't Americans. Every autumn, there would be a photoshoot at the school, and then you could order individual photos in different sizes and a standard class photo. Those were the photos that my mother would mail to our relatives. Other than school photos, our family only has very random snapshots of ourselves as we grew up. Most of them were taken with my own Brownie box camera.
sgtapone87@reddit
This doesn’t mean what you think it does to most Americans
MesopotamiaSong@reddit
i skimmed the title and read just, “how often” and “family shooting.” thought this post was going a very different direction.
To answer OPs question, i’m over 20 years old and i’ve had professional family photos taken once. we’ve taken our own group photo plenty of times
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
In Germany we call it a family shooting and use the english words for it.
LSATMaven@reddit
Growing up in the 80s and 90s, it was much more of a thing. Now that digital cameras/smartphones exist, it's much less.
RandomPaw@reddit
I was trying to remember the name of this place in the mall with fake backgrounds where families used to go to get a picture taken for Christmas or something. Olan Mills that was it.
I think we got a family picture taken when I was about five or six and that was the last time. Now it seems like families with five or six kids are all dressing in denim or off-white and posing in forests and fields for their family photos. Although Republican politicians do seem to pose for Christmas family pics with their rifles and machine guns. That might be closer to the "family shooting" thing.
otetrapodqueen@reddit
Agreed (on all counts, including the...shooting thing) I don't think my family has taken one since like... maybe 1996? And I'm not 100% on if we took one after my youngest sister was born so it could be like 1993
HottestestestMess@reddit
Wow, that’s honestly wild to me. I don’t think Americans have ever called a family portrait session a family shooting! Make a photo shoot, but never shooting. That’s almost exclusively used in reference to guns.
BipolarSolarMolar@reddit
If you're happy with the photos, you tell the photographer "nice shooting!"
HottestestestMess@reddit
💀<—me after the family shooting
stringstringing@reddit
A “family shooting” sounds like a mass murder to Americans.
OldFoolOldSkool@reddit
Load up the truck or van. Stock up on ammo. Give kids the smaller caliber weapons, and just have fun. A family that shoots together stays together!
Landwarrior5150@reddit
I would hope that most Americans would be able to use the context clue about photos elsewhere in the title, plus the knowledge that many posters in this sub are not native or fluent English speakers, to piece together what OP is asking about.
Or are you trying to imply that most Americans are too stupid to do that?
sgtapone87@reddit
No, but one American here is too stupid to get a joke.
Apart_Bid2199@reddit
I:m suprised we don't call a camera a photo gun. given nail gun, glue gun, grease gun, staple gun, barcode gun
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
I mean those other things are somewhat gun shaped, where cameras aren’t. And nail guns literally use gunpowder and shell casings to propel the nail
Browsing4Advice@reddit
What kind of nail gun does that? I thought they just used air.
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
They’re called “powder actuated” with that powered being gunpowder. Usually use a .22 caliber shell. Very common, you can buy them at any Ace/Home Depot/Menards etc.
The compressed air nail guns are pretty common too
Browsing4Advice@reddit
Nooo, why did you have to tell me they can do something different? Now my brain is telling me that I have to go buy one.
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
The tool distribution system works in mysterious ways my friend
HankyPanky80@reddit
It's is correct. Just not worded in a way that anyone in the US would use.
HottestestestMess@reddit
So glad I’m not the only one who has this reaction. I hate it here 😭
Dooze_@reddit
Literally my thought… I was like uh well there was that incident in Louisiana but it happens enough we don’t keep track
manicpixidreamgirl04@reddit
Most, never, or maybe only after each of their children are born. However, in the early 2000s, there was a subset of families who got pictures taken every year, so they could send out personalized holiday cars. I'm not sure if people still do that.
jvc1011@reddit
We do! (But only of the kids.)
gmanose@reddit
Some, yearly. Some, when they think about it every so often. And some, never. There is no national standard
Easy-Doubt1373@reddit
We never did it growing up, nor have my husband and I. The only professional photos we have are from our wedding and at a family’s wedding my parents and I attended when I was \~6. It isn’t about money but we prefer to take pics of us doing fun things together instead of just posing.
yyythoo@reddit
We did it once. And it was because my parents won it in a free raffle or auction. Something like that. But it’s something families will do once or twice
EatLard@reddit
We have a family reunion every two years with the extended family, and a professional photographer shows up to take the group photos. Every few years we get some done at thanksgiving time if everyone is able to make it.
ButterscotchOdd8257@reddit
Careful, don't say "shooting" around Americans or they'll get their guns.
wangus_angus@reddit
We did it once a year growing up, but that was before smartphones. Also, that costs money, so even then it was something that many families probably wouldn't have done regularly.
Lots of kids' activities involve official photos, as well. We take school photos every year, and parents often get a bunch of copies (or, again, used to). If you play youth sports, same thing.
skucera@reddit
We get photos taken each year for our Christmas cards.
YoshiandAims@reddit
Some families do it yearly. Some on special milestone occasions. Some do it only for family reunions. Some a mix of the above. I've known a few who do it seemingly every chance they get. Some never do it.
It really varies wildly.
MrsMitchBitch@reddit
With my husband and kid? We take pics annually because I want these early years documented.
With my parents and sister? Literally never.
Eff-Bee-Exx@reddit
It depends on the family. The only time my parents had professional family photos taken was just before I left home.
The only time that we had photos taken of ourselves and kids was just before my younger daughter moved out of state for college. This was at the instigation of my oldest daughter.
My oldest has professional family photos taken at least once a year, most recently for Mother’s Day. The younger daughter; once every few years. My son is single and has little interest in family photos, although he’ll show up if someone else arranges the session and asks him to be there.
FruityLegume@reddit
It used to be WAY more common before people carried a cell phone. My family went and got a new photo every couple of years when I was growing up. This was in the 80s.
KrazySunshine@reddit
One time, at my wedding
pawsplay36@reddit
My mom used to drag us to the mall once a year. I put my foot down when I was 14, I hate that style of picture. I prefer individual portraits or candids, and always have. My family now usually does a group photo at an event, like a graduation of a hiking trip or something. Sometimes my spouse insists on taking the little kids to the mall for a group shot, I refuse to participate.
Icy-Reporter-6322@reddit
Mall portraits always look like a family has been briefly detained by beige lighting. A candid at an actual event usually says more than everyone pretending to enjoy a carpeted photo bunker.
jvc1011@reddit
I’ve done it twice in my life. But it’s going to happen twice this year because life is odd.
No_Stand8812@reddit
The answer was sears for those of us older than 40ish.
Cpt_Rossi@reddit
OP is obviously trolling.
blondechick80@reddit
A "shooting" here usually involves guns. So if someone says "a family shooting" many folks are probably dead
ice_princess_16@reddit
The way family photos are done has changed over the years. My kids are in their late 20s. When they were young we had pictures taken of the kids every 1-2 years until they were in school, then they got school pictures. I think 2 or 3 times we did a family picture along with the kid pictures. These were usually done at a photo studio at Walmart, Sears, or JCPenney. Once all the kids were in school we stopped going to those types of studios.
By the time my oldest was ready to graduate from high school, senior portraits and family photoshoots were more commonly being done by independent photographers, often outside. All of my kids had senior photos taken by a local photographer. When the youngest was a senior we added family photos to the photoshoot. We even invited the grandparents.
Family photos are often part of wedding photos too. The brides whole family, the grooms whole family, individual shots of each family group within the larger family (brides brother, his wife and kids etc). Not as formal as a portrait but often a nice picture of the family.
Gunther482@reddit
On my dad’s side I know we had a professional portrait of our entire immediate family (grandparents, aunt and uncles first cousins) done when I was in high school \~15 years ago on my grandparents farm. I think that’s really the only “professional” one done that I can think of though.
muddymar@reddit
My SIL? Every freakin year, maybe each season. Me? Once a decade if that.
SignificantKitchen62@reddit
I don't think we have done in studio pictures since the 80's but we do go on cruises for vacation and there are backdrops set up everywhere before dinner and we will stop at a few. It's just a few shots at each backdrop and we will usually end up buying a few.
nebraskajone@reddit
Never
Responsible_Side8131@reddit
Maybe once every 10 years
GotMeAMuleToRide@reddit
Seemed like all the time when I was a kid, because I hated it so much. But I'm sure it was no more than once a year.
That's a tradition that I didn't continue with my own family. Not even once.
xquigs@reddit
“A family shooting” I immediately thought you meant “how often do American families go to the gun range” 🤣😭
tacobellgittcard@reddit
I know the title has been beat (shot?) to death, but I probably have more photos of me shooting with my family than I do from professional photo shoots
bachintheforest@reddit
My family went and did it once when I was a kid in the 90s… that’s the last time. In recent times when we’re visiting extended family, the older ones will usually insist we line up on the front porch or whatever and take a photo all together. That’s really about it. Some families do a Christmas card which means they get a photo once a year, but even then a lot of the time it’s just taken at their house using the timer on a camera or phone, not a professional photographer.
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
We did professional photos once, most of us were out of school by then. I think mom was very rightfully worried she'd never get all of us together again.
Number-2-Sis@reddit
Once upon a time (almost 30'years ago) I was a portrait studio photographer. We did 80% children, family's would often "jump in " if a new baby joined the family or at Christmas time. Other then that, only about 5% of photos we took were specifically "family portraits "
Once cell phones and selfies became common most portrait studios have closed and most family photos are taken by the family themselves with cell phones.
ZoeTravel@reddit
Every major holiday, a family from church will make a themed backdrop outside ...( Last Christmas was a gingerbread village). we are all there anyway ..it takes just a few seconds to have a friend snap a few pics with a cell
Browsing4Advice@reddit
I think income is going to be the biggest determining factor for this. Also maybe age? When my son was a baby I brought him in for monthly photos. Sometimes we did family ones while there, sometimes not.
Hot_Depth_3367@reddit
I just can't with the wording of this question!
Solid_Reserve_5941@reddit
My family never did it, even before cell phones were commonplace. The only photos we had in our house were my and my sibling's school photos and my parent's wedding photo. My dad would bring a camera to take photos of us on family vacations, but we never had professionally done family photos.
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
Never done it professionally, but we get a big family photo when we're all together for holidays, usually Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
TractorDrawnAerial@reddit
My family goes shooting every couple years. We take photos while shooting. Sometimes we even take photons without shooting.
pacododo@reddit
It varies, of course. My mom took us all to get a family portrait maybe three times in 18 years. My own family, never. I have a niece who has family portraits done several times a year. It's pretty ridiculous.
myotheroneders@reddit
My family has never had a professional photo shoot. But every year on christmas, we gather and my grandmother sets up a camera on a timer and takes a big group picture and she has them all displayed in her house
LABELyourPHOTOS@reddit
There are some on-line instagram type moms (and maybe dads too), that get one for like every milestone: Each month of the first year, each yearly birthday, christmas, easter, etc.
Some people like me that enjoy taking their own photos.
We've never have them done professionally. I like candids.
Temporary_Cow_8486@reddit
Family photo shoots are very common.
Dooze_@reddit
It was more common before the turn of the century. My parents sent me a photoshoot when my brother was a newborn in 2000s by Olan Mills. Now big photo (Shutterfly I think ) has kids photographed at school every year to track their growth. And we have cameras in our pocket so why not just use them to document your family
nomadschomad@reddit
Specifically, getting together with a photographer? I’d say anything between never and 2X per year is normal. For a traditional middle class family, Mom probably adores to do this every year and it ends up coming together every 2–3 years.
Maybe a little more common is dressing up for an event where you know there will be a photographer so you can end up with the same outcome. Church/school picnic, etc..
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
My family has never done that. I know others that have though. I’d say the answer is “sometimes.”
shammy_dammy@reddit
Depends on the family.
Rodtherobot4210@reddit
When I was a baby my family did a few and I’m glad we did them but that’s it.

It was extremely popular for families to get a professional portrait shot at a photo studio for decades. Not so much anymore because advanced picture technology has become available to everybody through digital cameras and smart phones.
jessek@reddit
I think we got a professional photo of the whole family taken once. My younger brothers made it such an ordeal my parents gave up after that.
Cerulean_IsFancyBlue@reddit
When I was a kid, so starting back in the mid 1960s, people would take a reasonable number of photos that special events are on vacation, but remember they were on film. That meant you had to pay for the film, and then you had to pay to get the film developed. You were lucky to get maybe 24 pictures of Christmas each year.
They also could turn out terrible since you didn’t see until they got developed and they were all sorts of ways to go wrong. You could have all the same framing error errors that you do today where somebody just points the camera poorly but you wouldn’t know about it until you got the film developed. You didn’t have the same type of dynamic range, auto focus, auto exposure correction, color, correction, and all that stuff going on.
If you wanted a good photo, you had to wait for uncle Jim to set up his tripods or, go see a professional. Not everybody had an uncle Jim, but everybody could go to Sears or JCPenney’s. It would be quite common to do this every year for some middle-class families, maybe less for people with less money, and for some families, they just never did it at all. It’s not a universal thing.
The other way you tended to get good photos, especially of your kid was, school photos. They would take photos so you could have one in your yearbook and they would sell you a package of prints so that your family could put a big one up in the living room that was current, and send smaller copies to the grandparents and aunt Gladys, maybe even want uncle Jim to show him what a good photo background really looks like. Not everybody wants palm trees, uncle Jim.
Over the past decade, I’ve seen places crop up that are effectively a photo studio — with better lighting and backdrops and some props — but they charge you a flat fee and let you take pictures as many as you want with your phone. It’s a pretty clever idea, and probably a good filler for otherwise empty storefront.

Once a year, for our Christmas card photo
Porcupine-in-a-tree@reddit
They are more common here in SLC apparently. We don’t do them but lots of people we know get professional photos done every few years. Not at a photo center though, always somewhere in the mountains or somewhere else outside (like the salt flats). I know like 6 different people who have side hustles as photographers and they do exclusively family photos.
agitatedandroid@reddit
For my family? Once. Our church offered it one day. Following Mass, we all just filed in, had our photo taken and then picked them up a few weeks later.
Carinyosa99@reddit
Please don't call it a shooting - that's used for referring to a very violent incident. What you want to say is "How often do American families go get a professional photo shoot done?"
As for me, we've never had one growing up (I'm 54) nor have my husband and I done one with our family.
Material-Wallaby-587@reddit (OP)
ah ok, in Germany photo studios advertise it as a family shooting which is also what we call it.
Crissup@reddit
Not very common. There are certainly a lot of places that provide the service, and enough business to keep them open, but as far as the percentage of the total population, I’d say it’s not very large.
Weary_Song7154@reddit
I have friends who get professional portraits done yearly, and ones who have literally never had them done. I think a lot depends on whether you have a friend who’s trying to build her portfolio.
la-anah@reddit
As with most things, it really depends. I am in my 50s and my family went to a photography studio for a professional group photo exactly once, when I was about 6.
My nephew is in his late 30s and he and his wife and kids have had professional family photos taken every year for the past 8 years.
Background-Passion50@reddit
For my family it was once a year usually during Christmas season as far as professional photos go. Of course on vacations we used to take family pictures all the time usually with the help of a kind fellow tourist (era before selfie sticks or smartphones). As far as now goes with the exception of our wedding my wife and I have never gone to a photographer to get a family photo taken. We don’t have kids anyways.
brokenman82@reddit
we did one for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. And I think once when I was a little kid
Carr0t_007@reddit
Even Modern Family just did it like 3 times
Creepy-Floor-1745@reddit
My family did once, we also had a photo shoot once that was me and my husband and one other time with just our kids
eirinne@reddit
59% of kids who died in mass shootings were at the hands of a family member. More than 40% of pediatric mass shooting victims were killed by a parent, the analysis found, and 59% of them died at the hands of a relative, including parents, aunts and uncles, siblings, grandparents, and cousins.
In 2020, gun violence surpassed car accidents as the No. 1 killer of children in the United States.
BrazilianButtCheeks@reddit
“Family shooting”😅😂
I literally haven’t since I was a kid with my parents.. I hate having pictures taken of me.. I take pictures of my kids so it seems like an unnecessary expense
humsterdaddy@reddit
We went to a Sears once when I was maybe 6. And we did one of this old-timey shoots at the state fair. Otherwise that’s about it.
I knew what you meant but the wording of your question is a little hilariously off. We typically try to avoid shootings!
SouthernCancel6117@reddit
My mom was obsessed with getting nice family photos every couple years or so. Usually around Christmas or because she found a good Groupon deal
randomname5478@reddit
My wife would have it done every 3 months once every season. I am fine never doing it again.
shelwood46@reddit
My family, never. My ex's family, one time when his sister (40s) decided they should get a big family photo before their parents died (it was about 10 years before her dad died, and 20 before her mom died. His sister was rather ghoulish).
panic_bread@reddit
My stepmother set my sisters and I up to do this about 30 years ago. That's it, just the one time. Otherwise, kids usually have their photos taken at school each year. Senior high school, it's a bigger deal with a better photographer and better lighting.
catchingstones@reddit
As a kid, probably 3 times. With my kids-never. We prefer real time photos and have a random person take it.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
This is the way
Airplade@reddit
Once. 1972
Sears family photo center
Vert354@reddit
When the kids were younger we'd get faimly portraits every few years.
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit
Once. And then they make the news
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit
But seriously family photos are taken once every couple years or so - more frequently when children are younger. And it basically stops once a kid leaves home. And then picks up again as kids visits and it’s whoever is around on that visit.
Remember kids are usually getting school photos so that’s probably enough for many parents except every couple years or even more
Lugbor@reddit
That depends on the family, and the individuals in that family. Some do a professional (mall photos) shoot every year, some only do photos at the reunion, and others don't do full family photos because someone doesn't like being photographed. I have not voluntarily appeared in a photo in at least a decade, and would've started a lot earlier if I could've.
Ok_Organization_7350@reddit
This is very common. Many families schedule an appointment with a professional photographer to get family photos. They typically have this done in the autumn. Then they use these photos for their Christmas/ Hanukkah cards they send to friends and family. Or when they have a family vacation, the will plan ahead to bring pretty matching outfits to have a special family picture taken on the beach, then they will use those photos for their holiday cards.
thatsad_guy@reddit
I dont think my family has ever done that
chongo79@reddit
Varies a lot.
Some rarely or never.
Others, around milestones. (Birth of another kid, before the eldest moves out).
Others, every year. Often around the holidays, but early enough to include the photo with the Christmas card.
My family as a kid, every year. My family now as adult, 4 times before the kids moved out.
Left-Star2240@reddit
One Aunt and Uncle did this.
It was annoying. My cousin and I responded one year by sending everyone a picture of us and our respective cats.
Personal-Hospital103@reddit
Before digital photos, we prolly went one every 5 years.
KJHagen@reddit
I think we did that two or three times.
Ok_Caterpillar2010@reddit
A professional photography session? My family never had one. I have a couple friends who did it when they had a baby.
Live-Medium8357@reddit
My sister's family - atleast 2x a year. My family last got family photos around 9 yrs ago.
This varies greatly.
Js987@reddit
I can’t remember ever doing it as a whole family, just the kids. And that was just once or twice, as we got pictures at school at least once per year.
Boring_Material_1891@reddit
So rarely that most families probably go actually shooting more often than the shooting you refer to.
Grungemaster@reddit
Some families do it every year. Most never go at all. My family has done it a few times.
jsmeeker@reddit
once a year for Christmas card photos?
