Cool places to live as a late 20-something

I’m potentially moving around the Dallas metro area for a job and am feeling a bit sad about leaving my community. Ideally id be more north.

Where I live is close to an active downtown area where there are a lot of shops and restaurants. We have a great community and the city host a lot of events. The city I live in is still pretty car centric but I feel like at least in the area I live in I can always walk around and the events are usually down the street from me, the neighborhoods have mature trees and a lot of the houses are older, unique and in the beautiful craftsman style. There is always a little coffee shop to visit, a bookstore, a record store, a park etc. to kill time in.

I don’t have to live somewhere just like this of course and don’t expect anywhere to fit the bill perfectly but that’s just an idea of why I love where I live.

Are there any areas that have a lot of events and activities, and maybe some decent walkability for a younger person? I visited McKinney awhile ago and thought their historic downtown area was really nice but overall haven’t had much experience in and around DFW that wasn’t just strip malls as far as the eye can see, near the galleria, or to see a show in deep ellum. I just want to be somewhere that has a little charm and character, I’m hoping I don’t have to live in a cookie cutter ‘luxury’ apartment where the best thing to do near me is hit up target.

TIA
