The bridge needs seatbelts

Obviously it doesn’t make any sense cinematically, but it occurred to me that seatbelts would really help a lot. Not even the captain’s chair has one.

Gene Roddenberry was once asked why the bridge seats didn’t have seatbelts. “Because if they did, the actors couldn’t fall out of them.”
shakebakelizard@reddit
IRL they would have seatbelts, airbags and the uniforms would resemble motocross armor. They would have helmets stored at battle stations.
GABigBear@reddit
Everyone always forgets the Kelvin movies.
opusrif@reddit
There was a cut scene in Nemisis that would have been at the end of the film with the new first officer pointing out the new restraints n the Captain's chair and Picard equipping " it's about time!"...

Inertial dampeners?
Although, TBF, they seem to go offline pretty much every time the Enterprise is in any sort of percarious situation.
geobibliophile@reddit
Inertial dampers. Inertial dampeners would make something wet. Dampers reduce vibration or absorb mechanical shock.

1) Everyone needs a chair, because it's kind of awful to expect everybody to be standing just because they're in the back of the bridge.
2) More seat belts
3) Less C-4 in the displays. They're too prone to explosions from random power surges.
shadowscar248@reddit
I assure you the C-4 and rocks are absolutely necessary for space travel
twoneedlez@reddit
You can’t come to an all-stop in space unless you have enough weight, hence the rocks in the empty spaces.
Inside-Run785@reddit
What about Cetacean Ops? That should be plenty heavy?
twoneedlez@reddit
True - plus Cetacean Ops gets unlimited fish.

Actual lol. I was also recently thinking that whatever the wiring is to those displays maybe needs to be low-voltage or something, rather than enough juice to run industrial power tools.
CaptainMatticus@reddit
They really don't need a lot of power, since they're just controls and they make fuses. We've got 'em today. Just put in some fuse panels.
sourcecraft@reddit (OP)
Fuses must like money, they think they don’t need it anymore. 😂
FragrantExcitement@reddit
inertial dampeners will take care of things. I would think they would never fail. Also, there has to be advanced fuse technology to prevent electrical overloads. Those panels will never spark.
Fizzer-the-meek@reddit
Health and safety on that ship is atrocious! How many times have random objects fallen on people in the cargo bays? Whoever is in charge needs to learn how to do a proper risk assessment.
sourcecraft@reddit (OP)
Omg. Always unsecured stacks of barrels in the cargo bays…
SportTop2610@reddit
I'm amazed no one broke any ribs in that stupid room ??

Space suits might also be a good idea now and then
Triad64@reddit
I want to see that Generations scene with seat belts on the bridge.
(Come to think of it... it would be really helpful with that one Nemesis scene too..)
Torlek1@reddit
A deleted scene from Nemesis is all about Picard testing a new seat belt.
sourcecraft@reddit (OP)
That deleted scene is quite fascinating as it’s the only reference to seatbelts in the entire franchise (?)… and then they deleted it. Almost like an inside joke?
Sea-Quality4726@reddit
TMP and the Excelsior under Styles had lap restraints.

https://youtu.be/6b8jsrDl89M?si=e5XM5r3Hqb2SCsQf excellent scene!
sourcecraft@reddit (OP)
Omg thanks for that! I’ll look for it.
Kahnza@reddit
Or maybe they should research better inertial dampeners. What are they, stupid?
sourcecraft@reddit (OP)
Those dampeners are the screen sliding doors of the future.
Peas-Of-Wrath@reddit
And hard hats. For the rocks and rebar they keep in the ceiling.
sharpied79@reddit
It doesn't make any sense in-universe either.
What do you think artificial gravity and inertia dampeners are for?
And yes, very aware these can be knocked out in extreme situations (such as battle) but still.
No seat belts required, human technology reigns supreme...
Track_and_trek@reddit
I think airbags would be better…
