Is it normal to brush your teeth just before going to the dentist?

I’m single parenting at the moment while my wife is in hospital. My (amazing) mother-in-law offered to take the kids to the dentist so I could visit hospital. She agreed to do so but told me that I should drop the kids off with their toothbrushes. I thought it weird because I never brush my teeth just before a dentist appointment. I would feel like I was giving them a false picture of my dental health and that would lead to incorrect advice. I talked to my SIL and she said it might just be a thing specific to her family. I asked my wife and she said “I wouldn’t turn up to a smear test with dirty flaps” (seriously how awesome is she). Now I think about it, have I been accidentally insulting my dentist all these years by turning up with a stinking garlic face hole?
