Hello!
I dont know if this is the wrong subredit to ask ,so sorry in advance.
I just have a problem with getting a gift for my girlfriend.
She is a embedded software developer that is qute stressed.
She has alot of work everyday so i want to help her with that a bit ,even if its just a small help. So i wanted to know if you guys have a good idea for a gift for her.
She has a keyboard and mouse she already likes.
I already asked the embedded software developers at my workplace but they dident have anything realy...
Thanks in advance

As a fellow female stressed dev, for the love of God, don't buy her anything work related. She's already thinking about her job too much, I guarantee you. Aim for her hobbies, something she'll find relaxing, etc.

I know you want to help with her work, but just in case you haven’t already done this: get her something that’s not related to work at all - flowers and chocolate to start.
If she’s already working a lot, give her something to enjoy when she’s not working like a massage, or a book, or something crafts related.

a shiatsu pillow sounds nice, but does it really help with the stress? like, can it compete with a good old gaming session or a beer?

Mhhhm a good idea. Already planned some other gifts for her exepct that. I just wanted to figure out maybe a way to help her daily besides the other stuff. Thx tough :D

An awesome pair of headphones with ANC

OP take her to the botanical gardens on a date and then dinner at a nice restaurant.

A shiatsu massage pillow really helps a stressed dev

this is good advice actually. when you're already spending most of your day staring at code and debugging hardware, last thing you want is more tech stuff as gift. maybe something that gets her completely away from screens - like nice bath stuff or maybe tickets for some experience you can do together. work stress usually means she needs proper disconnect time more than work tools.

But to be completely honest, the best gifts for embedded/software people are generally not really "coding gadgets". Most devs are already super opinionated on what they want for keyboards/mice etc.
The gifts that generally have the most impact are ones that lower stress or increase comfort over long work days.
Monitor light bars are genuinely underrated too - it makes late night debugging less tiring on the eyes than many people understand. Ergonomic things, like a good foot rest or neck pillow, will be appreciated in ways that are surprisingly valuable once the user's spent all day reading logs and debugging firmware.
Another silly but surprisingly useful gift is a mug warmer. It sounds silly until you realize developers commonly leave their coffee around for 2 hours because they're still trying to hunt down that invisible bug lol.
And honestly, if she's already burnt out, maybe it's not even work-related performance improving things you should be giving her. Engineers suffering from burnout tend to want help disengaging, not another "techy" thing.

Well based on my time in embedded systems...a nice bottle of liquor.

A vacation where you plan everything

If you do want something related to what she does, how's her computer chair? A brand-new chair might be a bit much, but there are some nice cushions which will make you look thoughtful and sympathetic to her situation.

Massage or nails certificate. Even a chair massage or reflexology massage is nice!

These massage pillows are amazing, or the thing that you put on the chair and it massages you. Also you could buy some relaxing candles or wax melts if this is something she likes. A couples massage sounds also good. It is a stressful job so I would count on something relaxing.

Eye patches, silk pillowcase and pillow spray, hair & nail vitamins, jewellery, dark chocolate with orange pieces and matcha powder if she likes those things.

So far experience with girls in it: they like beer and they like bad humour… sample size is about 200, so not that high, but tendencies are visible… great people to be around…
Keyboards for programmers is always sth to be careful…
With stress it’s always: why is someone stressed: lot of shit todo: help them, don’t focus on it with a gift. Can’t find good coffee: moca pot and good coffee…
Looking for help with gifts is often not a good idea, as gifts should be personal…
