Popular music is often shit because it's what the big players push into people. The culture is often the underground. Unless it's pop because that's the whole point.
This is like listening to a few country songs and deciding that all white artists glorify drinking and cheating.
Nas, Common, Chance the Rapper, Lupe Fiasco, A Tribe Called Quest, and Dem Atlas are just a few off the top of my head that easily break this trope. Did you even try?
Once rap started to talk about taking pills and lean and shit about a decade ago, kids at my brother’s middle school started od’ing on pills and fucking doing lean. Kids will definitely try to act like the music artists they like (especially if they’re stupid enough/susceptible to peer pressure). I truly believe much of rap has been a net negative on society.
yeah pretty much started like that in the late 80s ,early 90s.
The funniest thing about rap is how everyone thought they were listening to thugged out music, but it was just a bunch of gay guys pretending to be thugs while ruining the culture.
And the rolling loud festival...the tiny hats really did a number helping rot minds across America, holy shit.
Nah, its just corrupted to the bone. The core of the real Hip Hop culture is expressing yourself through art and everyone can be a teacher to improve this culture.
Violence in the black neighborhoods predates hip hop with like 50 years, in a time when life was actually difficult for blacks in America, work and education wasn't as easy to get because of racism
Poverty in a rich country leads to social problems and violence, violence fuck young kid's lives and the circle continues hip hop is just reflecting that still some of it priceless though
There’s some good gems but you are right the themes of the music are always about their origin (Running drugs or gangbanging) or the reaction to their race (and maybe their prior occupation but who’s to say?)
Kendrick or Jay Z or Tupac or Ice Cube or Janelle Monae or Tribe Called Quest...
This is like judging "white music" (jfc listen to how dumb that sounds) by the most generic pop or country songs you can find... There's literally centuries of award winning, deeply emotional and thoughtful music by black artists... Stuff that smart or funny or soulful or moving... Like wtf lol
The thing is, i suspect that somewhere arround the end of the 80s, black cuture was hijacked and further degraded into what we know as the today gangsta rap and even that died out and is giving the place to trap, tha black comunity in the US is incredibly musicaly inovative and capable of making truly groundbreaking stuff but it seems today the industry only prioritizes shallow stuff that promotes criminal activities, even here in Brazil where i live i noticed this, the great soul music of Tim Maia and tropicalism of Gilberto Gil gave place to pagode and later brazilian funk(wich is actualy inspired by miami bass) and our version of trap, both genres being used to laundry money for drug trafickers. I don't know what happened because black comunities in both countries used to produce truly great stuff, it all seems like some kind of psyop to instigate further division and culture degradation but i'm not sure.
Most of it is bullshit, yeah. There are a few artists and groups out there that break the mold, but overall it’s a lot of reused themes and even bars, and beyond that the creativity in the genre has just been faltering further as of late.
even if this is true, what else are you gonna listen? what virtous white lyricist is producing music that doesnt fall into this same shit?
at least rap is pretty based/badass. white music is either "im such a whore and everyone wants to fuck me" or "i loaded up the shotgun into the pickup truck and went driving through the ranch"
I’d argue that in the early Jazz days Black people were some of the greatest musicians. It’s crazy how massive of a downgrade has occurred in their community. I would put the blame on record labels pushing for this type of “music” onto the masses but there’s a lot to unpack.
Is there no filtering body which acts like a regulator in American music industry? They knows kids will listen to these songs, they know these songs is going to get export out to other places to play.

There is a lot of early rap that comments on the state of the world in a political sense (elite vs commoners, wars, violence, ect), but a lot of modern rap is about sex, drugs, and money. To be fair, a lot of modern music in general is about those 3 things too, I guess it sells.
Modern rap is an israeli psyop to keep urban americans on welfare and to glorify crime culture. Any black artist who tries to make meaningful art is rarely makes it mainstream and when they do they usually don't make meaningful art after that for... reasons.
Whenever someone says I am poor, I reach into my sock and put on my gold plated tooth grill. A rapper told me success is displaying ostentatious jewellery.
Black culture is nothing more than sex, cars, shoes, money. There is no substance. There is no meaning. Devoid of any understanding of the world that exists around the.
