I will never understand how these fuckers are not extinct. They are the most fragile living beings i've ever seen. I wanted to adopt one so i watched some videos to understand what you need to not stress out the little fella, ended up paying a shitton of money for a huge habitat with the size of a washing machine and tons of bedding, toys, wheels etc. For a week everything was fine and it was doing pretty well, then one night we had a thunderstorm. Next day i've found it dead near the trough with piss and shit all over the place. Apparently sound of a thunderclap is enough to give these little shits heart attacks. How are these little shits stay alive in nature? Do they all get raptured when a storm comes? I fucking hate them.
No animal is better as a pet than a dog, cat, and for some strange people, a horse. That was the moral, if anything of Tiger King. Only narcissists weirdos want exotic pets to seduce and sleep with dumb teenagers. Everytime we go to the zoo and an see deer, chimp, a wallaby and some brainless hoe will whine that she wants to take it home. But a wallaby hasn't coexisted with humans for thousands of years. It hasn't co evolved to understand our emotions and fullfil an important niche in our society. To be sure, you can keep hamsters and lizards in a vivarium. You can cage and observe and study them. But only a dog, a cat, and perhaps a horse, will be capable of loving you, in the simplistic yet pure way that a human deeply craves from the beasts.
Rats are dope pets. They are basically pocket puppies.
They most definitely form strong bonds and attachment with their owners, are actually pretty fuckin sharp little critters, and they aren’t going to die from hearing some thunder.
Can train them to do all sorts of things too. Short life span really blows though
Rats seem like genuinely great pets. Getting emotionally attached to an animal that only tends to live for two years will very likely stop me from ever owning one.
Well it's good the number I heard is very conservative, but I'm still so used to cats and dogs where I get at least a decade (except the Great Danes, damn them) from my companion that it'd be a really hard pill to swallow.
It’s a fair point. It’s honestly the worst aspect of having them.
Hopefully, medical science and better breeding may be able to expand it a bit one day. If there are any animals we could do it with, it’s gotta be rats. Just from the amount of testing and whatnot we do with them.
Either way, pet or no pet, they are pretty interesting to read about. You can live vicariously through other rat owners online.
It’s a damn shame though, because outside of dogs, cats, and horses (not exactly viable as a pet for most people) I can’t think of a single other animal that would meet the original commenters criteria.

Two years is a bit of a misconception. If you check out the rat subreddit or any other group, most people have theirs for 3-5 years.
Mine never died at 2, and I’ve had several. It’s still short though, and it sucks. But they are the best little guys.
