Moving back to India

Hi everyone,
I’m an NRI and currently a European resident. I have received a good remote-work offer that allows me to work from India, so I’m considering moving back with my family, including my 2-year-old daughter.
I’m trying to shortlist Indian cities based on the following priorities:
- Clean air, preferably AQI below 60 most of the time
- Safe and peaceful environment for a young child
- Civilized, respectful, and helpful people around
- No major language barrier; English is fine
- Strong and reliable internet for remote tech work
- Good hospitals and clinics nearby
- Good schools with practical/holistic learning, ideally something like gurukul, Montessori, Waldorf, or experiential learning
- Good access to shops, supermarkets, and daily services
- Nearby nature
- A calm European-town feeling rather than a crowded metro lifestyle
According to my astrocartography, the South India belt looks more favorable for long-term settlement, but I’m also quite attracted to some Northeast/hill cities because of the clean air, peaceful culture, and nature.
Cities I’m currently considering:
- Mysuru
- Chandigarh
- Gangtok
- Coonoor
- Coimbatore
- Thiruvananthapuram
- Pondicherry / Auroville
I’m originally from Maharashtra, but I feel Pune and Nashik have become crowded and may also have worse AQI compared to the cities listed above.
I would really appreciate honest ground-level feedback, especially from people who live in these cities or have recently moved there.
Which city would you recommend for a peaceful, safe, family-friendly life with good services? Also, which neighborhoods should I explore or avoid?
Thanks in advance!

Varanasi 😂

you can remove the southern belt if you don't want the language barrier. North East will not give you the good hospital, supermarket requirement. You basically have a wishlist which is difficult to fulfill. Maybe you want to remove some of them if possible. Kochi is one which comes near but again the language barrier would remain.

But they prefer english right?

Nowhere in India anyone prefers English. You need to have a local language skill. Hindi has the widest coverage which limits you to the North.

I’m not an expat. Abcd here. Haven’t travelled to India in many years. Serious question tho, is there any city or large town w a good Aqi in India?

I know lots of people from India. I know very few who want to go back.

Most unrealistic expectations from someone, albeit an NRI. Like you forgot India is a land of more than 1.6 billion people and everyone wants to move to bigger cities compared to where they live.
Look for tier 3 cities for somewhat better AQI and better quality of life. Forget tier 1 as AQI is always higher than 100 even with Govt tying to scam the numbers.

Maybe cross post to r/nri

Tbh I would've recommended pune especially but since it's mostly crowded which you want to avoid you should go for mysore, dehradun or pondicherry these are best for peaceful life and have good infra and all

Dehradun also getting crowded and aqi is declining. It could be my choice few years ago

Not Pondicherry LOLL, i moved here from Hyderabad for work and its a downgrade in almost every single thing (except for the beaches which are still decent)

Don't go for Coimbatore. The most boring place in India.
