One time I had a mice in my apartment. I caught one with a poison trap only to be traumatized after finding out the poison slowly paralyzes them and they just starve to death while paralyzed.
The traditional snap traps were quite effective and killed them instantly.
Then I decided to try a glue trap. I'll concede that it was very effective as I caught three mice with one trap. But then they were suck there alive, and I realized I had to be the one to kill them if I didn't want them to be stuck there for days panicking and starving to death. So I spent like an hour listening to these poor mice withe around screaming while I panicked trying to think of a way to humanely kill them. My first thought was to kill them with a hammer but I couldn't bring myself to look these animals in the face and smash them with a hammer. Finally I took them outside and ran them over with my car. Missed the first time and only crushed them halfway and they were still alive. Had to do it again.
I went back to regular mouse traps and drank the entire rest of the night.
Jesus Christ bro you brutalized them. I’ve got a friend in a lab with rats, he told me to grab their tails, and wrap one hand around its head, then pull in both opposite directions as fast as you can. It snaps their neck instantly and they die immediately, it’s not a long drawn out or bloody process. Easy to do when in a glue trap as well, you can also calm them down by petting.
Decapitation is a common method. There are mice/rat guillotines, kinda like those paper cutting machines. My lab used one. You'd sedate the animal first and then decapitate it. You can also overdose them on sedatives and they'd pass away peacefully. Although, many experiments involving mice and rats usually end in the termination of the animals since you need to inspect their insides. Our instructor also told that you can hold them by their tail between your fingers and slam their head against the table to terminate multiple at once. These are all for sedated animals however. While I am certified to handle rodents in a lab, I wouldn't ever touch a wild mice or rat, nor would I recommend doing so. Even the tiny mouse has a nasty bite and if you are ever bitten go get a tetanus shot.
That’s makes sense, he didn’t mention that method to me atleast. I don’t think I could snap a rats neck after testing with it for months I’d feel bad, so I don’t know how he does it
Right? I can’t imagine having a lethal trapping method where I then have to be the one to finish it off. Pulling is an off putting action too, snapping something’s neck like that is deliberate form of violence many wouldn’t be comfortable with anyways. You do it wrong and you have a maimed animal that’s terrified and you have to do it again (source: grew up with farmers with meat chickens, wringing is an effective and humane cull method if you know how to do it!)
My GFs parents‘ cat likes to bring mice into the house. Usually they are mostly unharmed and can be caught and released, there have been times where they’re pretty badly injured though.
One day we’re alone at her parents house and the cat brings in a mortally wounded mouse. We manage to get the cat away from it and catch it and are left with the decision of what to do with the mouse. The most humane way that I could think of in the moment was to take it outside and crush it with a piece of firewood.
It was definitely a horrible feeling, especially killing it so brutally but I just hope it was the most instant way for the poor thing to go.
The snap of a mechanical mousetrap is instant and mostly painless. But to comfort the people who don’t go through it, the living, we found less humane ways, where the violence is torturous to the victim but seems painless to an audience.
Fortunately that’s only the case for rats and nothing else.
The spring loaded snap traps are the best. I too tried glue traps but they're really sickening and inhumane to me. Mouse was looking at me as I ended its life with a jab of a stick.
I love these kinds of “had to euthanize an animal” stories, it’s never like “Yeah I tried to use a downer or carbon dioxide” or even shooting them, it’s like “Yeah I took hydrochloric acid and poured it in their eyes” BRO WHAT WHY
Bucket wasn't big enough for that many nor could that net be dipped in and out in a reasonable amount of time in the short time of what the text states... Please explain 6 million...
Is this the warning sign for serial killers? When they torture and kill small critters? At least this guy is stupid enough that he'll get caught early, minimize his impact.
Killing animals for fun vs eradicating invasive species because they will kill more animals via exisiting is different. If he enjoyed torturing them it’d be different tho

Most labs use dry ice to asphyxiate them with co2, or at least that’s what we did.

Idk my roommate put the glue traps out I would’ve bought the ones that instantly kill them if they’re getting killed and not relocated

With a cold blooded animal it's also easier because if you put them in a cold area they'll usually go to sleep, then you can kill them afterwards.
