Norm MacDonald Nostalgia

There’s been this gradual loss of freedom of expression since we were younger, and I’ve had trouble putting my finger on it. Then I went through the rabbit hole of watching old Norm MacDonald bits on YouTube, and I was like “this is it.” I remember me and my friends used to spend a lot of time saying the most absurd things we could think of — just because it was funny. In the 90’s there was a novelist named Mark Leyer publishing books like The Tetherballs of Bougainville that I think captured the same thing.

Who posted this thread? You guessed it…Frank Stallone.

The frank stallone bit is fucking hilarious. Never gets old.

Dirty Work is one of my favorite comedies. Almost every line is funny.

It’s a shame that Sagat was embarrassed by it. I love that movie!

I got very lucky. I went to a small college in the Midwest, and they booked Norm for a live show. He did not disappoint
I remember one of my classmates decided to bring a younger sibling with her. I mean, the kid wasn’t even in high school. Norm had this look of momentary shock on his face, like he was thinking he should reconfigure his whole show. And then he was like, Nah, fuck that
username__0000@reddit
He did get fired for refusing to stop doing OJ jokes, if I’m remembering right? Some of the SNL big wig was friends with OJ and he got a bunch of warnings to knock it off but refused to stop.
Which, respect! But it wasn’t that “free” if he’s losing his job over it.
pug_fugly_moe@reddit
The rumor I heard was that a light fell or blew out and he said, “what the fuck is that?” on live TV.
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
Letterman had him on his show right after he was for from SNL and it's hilarious. Well all of his letterman appearances are hilarious actually.
JohnEffingZoidberg@reddit
His bit about Germany being the country he's most afraid of is hilarious.
Plane-Post-7720@reddit
Which all goes to prove his theory: Germans love David Hasselhoff.
ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit
The one where he had Hasslehof on Weekend update and made him say “Germans love me” was such a cherry on top of that long running joke.
pug_fugly_moe@reddit
Let’s say someone has a lot of evidence throws piles of paper on the desk that Germans love you.
DStew713@reddit
Haha. I remember Hasselhoff was talking about a European tour and Norm kept asking about Germany. Hasselhoff said he didn’t even go to Germany.
Good times
handsomeape95@reddit
Or so the Germans would have us believe.

Norm was great. Not everything he did landed, but when it did land it was some of the most hilarious stuff I've ever seen.
I miss that whole era of cynical, sarcastic, yet highly astute and sharp as a blade comedy. Norm, Phil Hartman, Letterman, even Carlin. All masters of that style.

Interviewer: I can imagine being on my deathbed and thinking, Why did I waste so many meals on yogurt?
Norm: Absolutely. You know, I think about my deathbed a lot.
I: What do you think about it?
N: I think I should never have purchased a deathbed in the first place.

You notice how they always find the girl in a shallow grave? Doesn’t it seem like they should start by searching all the shallow graves?

Number One on the music charts this week, Better Than Ezra.
Number Two, Ezra.

I didn't even know he was sick
Gravy_Sommelier@reddit
I'm convinced that he kept his diagnosis a secret just so this punchline would come up every time he was talked about.
irate_alien@reddit
he ended up in a tie with cancer
Ornery-Ad-9886@reddit
His live appearances on Conan O’Brian are my absolute favorites, I can’t decide if roasting Carrot Top movies or his Moth joke are my all time favorite jokes live TV jokes.
“Well, the light on.”
RIP Norm

One of my favorite Norm lines is from when he talks about the news, and how there's not enough news to fill 24 hours so they try to get you invested in things that aren't really news. We found out more about this lady that vanished. Her name is Janice...

I would like to meet her one day. !>That would be a lot of -- Fuck, I forgot she vanished!!<

There's only one person I can think of who had a better comedic delivery than Norm MacDonald.
You guessed it. Frank Stallone.
Godloseslaw@reddit
Wasn't he fired for continually criticizing OJ because some executive was OJ's friend?
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
Yeah, Don Ohlmeyer was the head of NBC at the time
goodhobbies@reddit (OP)
Comedy gold — David Letterman, “I know Don Ohlmeyer, and between you and me, he’s an idiot. So, I wouldn’t take it seriously if this guy fired you.” https://youtu.be/Ki6z4ohppbE?si=QD-TVrMQ2zsZhktt

He was blacklisted for his extremist anti-murder ideology.

The best comedian of all time, IMO.

The bit on the crocodile hunter’s death on the daily show always gives that “I shouldn’t laugh but I can’t help it” vibe he was so good at.

Man I miss Norm too. Not one of our prime Norm examples, but I was just thinking of when he was Norm the Genie on Fairly Odd Parents and then sighed and said, "Miss you buddy."

His bit on women drivers was hilarious. I still Laugh when I think about it. Just kidding, we don’t hire women. Seems like he was really calling SNL out.

He was a legend. And though he might not be as known as a lot of comics, he's probably your favorite comic's favorite comic. No one was like Norm. Watch Norm on the Saget roast, especially when he's talking to Bob. Then Bob died and that clip took on even more meaning.

Norm: "really? I think the worst part is the raping"

Sure it's been mentioned elsewhere, but get on Spotify and listen to the Conan Needs a Friend episode with Jim Downey. Legendary SNL writer and the other half of Norm's Weekend Update run. He's got some great stories about Norm, plus the legendary opening of "No, I'm talking about JEFFREY Epstein, the New York financier. With the island."
