Gays and women run Hollywood.
HunterGraves00@reddit
Call me a conspiracy theorist but I firmly believe all the casting and other odd decisions (replacing orchestra with rap?) in the Odyssey movie are being made specifically to stir up some culture war drama. I don't know what the goal is but I'm sure these wacky decisions did not come from 'artistic liberties' only.
Kinglygolfin@reddit
The culture war is coming to a head, though. This movie is going to fucking suck and bomb with or without it.
BongWaterRamen@reddit
It won't bomb
HansensHairdo@reddit
Lmao, it'll lose 100s of millions. That's the definition of bombing.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
If you think that the latest Christopher Nolan movie is going to lose hundreds of millions, you're officially retarded.
HansensHairdo@reddit
If you think the Oddysey, a story that appeals almost exclusively to white men with a history interest is going to make any money, while solely casting the worst possible options, you're officially retarded.
Ok_Field_5701@reddit
Nah you’re wrong. Nolan will sell no matter what. 4chan’s retarded narratives and bitching won’t stop the general public. He is a cinematic god in the eyes of most normies, and guess who will be seeing it?
Chakosa@reddit
Uhh nobody because I don't know anyone who has even been to an actual theater more than 1-2 times since 2019, and those were for anime.
Jkpttr@reddit
yeah you sound like you only “know” people who would exist on reddit lmao - not the overall majority
Chakosa@reddit
Who is "the overall majority"? The laypublic does not give two shits about who the director of a movie is, they care about the IP and if it's worth (in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic i.e. $ value) gathering in-person to make a social event out of it.
Ok_Field_5701@reddit
How fucking out of touch from reality are you? Do you go outside? When is the last time you interacted with a human being in person? The majority of people who watch movies care about the director of a movie.
Chakosa@reddit
Brother I implore you to quit larping as someone who goes outside and actually stand on a sidewalk and ask every person who walks by who their top 5 directors are. Please report back with the number of people who can even name more than 2 let alone rank them.
Ok_Field_5701@reddit
Oh well if you don’t know anybody who has been to a theater then I guess no one has, you’re right.
HansensHairdo@reddit
Lmao, the general public? Name the people in the general public who think "the Oddysey" sounds great, and want to go see that at a time where cinemas are bleeding because movies are so expensive?
Fucking no one. He'll get a.below expectations opening weekend, and then word of mouth will tank the film out of theaters within a month or two.
SpringwoodOhio1428@reddit
The same people that saw Oppenheimer.
HansensHairdo@reddit
Yeah, totally comparable. Except one is about a man who shaped the modern world and that everyone inadvertently has a relationship with, while the other is a dusty tome that only history nerds care about whatsoever. Totally the same thing.
Ok_Field_5701@reddit
70mm IMAX tickets sold out for this movie like a year ago when it was released and it’s still not even out yet. What the fuck are you talking about? Nolan has grossed over $6 BILLION globally in box office earning. Sincerely, you are fucking retarded.
HansensHairdo@reddit
Lmao, yeah some prerelealse of 1/1000th of the tickets the movie needs to sell to make it's money back is clearly enough to prove it will be a success.
Ok_Field_5701@reddit
Go ahead and tag me when it’s released and show me the numbers since you’re confident it will bomb
HansensHairdo@reddit
Nah, why don't you tag me when this inevitable disaster comes close to breaking even.
SpringwoodOhio1428@reddit
People like epic action movies.
HansensHairdo@reddit
Yeh, they do. Which is why this one shouldn't have worked as hard as it can to be a signifciantly worse version of the story than fucking Troy. If they did it like that movie did, it would be a success. But, instead they went in the completely opposite direction.
InternetSolid4166@reddit
Tenet lost money. You’re acting like it’s impossible for Nolan to lose money.
mang87@reddit
That's his one and only bomb, and it was produced and released during covid which obviously fucked it. I'm not even a Nolan fan, but he is one of those big directors people will go see even though they know nothing about the movie. You think people were excited to see a movie about Robert fucking Oppenheimer?
meIRLorMeOnReddit@reddit
They were excited to see a movie about the Atom bomb
hatchbacks@reddit
Nah dude has burned through too much of his goodwill with duds like Dunkirk and Tenet. Oppenheimer arguably only performed as well as it did because it released opposite of Barbie and there was nothing else to watch.
This movie might actually bomb.
Coronalol@reddit

PerfectBlueOnDVD@reddit
Well you're the one that said it was considered one of the best war movies in existence, you should at least be able to qualify that.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
Lmao. I don't need to do a damn thing. If you want to come up with an exact positional ranking for the movie Dunkirk you're free to do it yourself.
PerfectBlueOnDVD@reddit
I don't want to do that, but I'm not the one that claimed it was one of the best war movies in existence (lol), you were.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
I'm not the one who claimed that either. I said it's considered one of the best war movies in existence (lol). Here, this should help you understand: link
PerfectBlueOnDVD@reddit
"Is Dunkirk a good movie" I don't care, if you ask me the answer is no, it's a dogshit movie, but that isn't the question. You claimed it was considered "one of the best war movies in existence", by whom? By what measure? That is all that is being asked of you and it shouldn't take this many replies to get an answer.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
Yeah, you're right, it SHOULDN'T take this many replies to get an answer. Because I already answered in the above comment. >the culture war is coming to a head
toxyy-be@reddit
it's about changing History, if all we have in the future is this odyssey, rachel zegler's snow white, the new little mermaid, etc, and old medias are destroyed for being "offensive", we will accept infinite immigrants because it's the new norm.
sprinkill@reddit
One problem with "infinite immigrants" that noone talks about is that a substantial portion of the developed world - like East Asia - don't believe in it (so billions of people). The end result is that you'll turn Europe and North America into third world countries, thereby leaving China, Japan, etc., to flourish. I don't get it.
toxyy-be@reddit
Now comes the conspiracy, all who allow immigrants have a certain community (who's entire belief, is based around hating jesus christ) with immense power, while those who don't (low amount of christians), have almost none from that community.
Hadnapaton@reddit
Why would israel want to put people that hate them in places where they could do much more harm to them that is a very stupid idea
toxyy-be@reddit
Js*. In the Quran, monotheists (judaism, christism and islam) are considered to be equals in the eyes of allah (although muslism are correct, etc). Also, they hate with a passion Christ, and believe their messiah will save them once the great Israel is secured.

DatingThrowaway121@reddit
If you can look beyond the base racism that motivates anti-immigrant attitudes, you'll find that it is actually crucial for the long term health of a society. If you're so bullish on China and Japan, I would advise you to look into their demographic trends, and then come back and tell me that THEY have the advantage here.
sprinkill@reddit
Can you please expand on this? How does importing people from the developing world by the millions contribute to the "long term health of a society?" And if the birthrate is down a bit, can we perhaps maybe get a bit more creative then just, "oh well, open up the border entirely to everyone and anyone that seeks entry. Only requirement is that their reproductive organs function and they're willing to use them." The "left" likes to brag about how smart they are all the time, but when you break their ideas down to the basic level, they actually really are the worst ideas that anyone could possibly imagine.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
I mean these are well documented points borne out by history - when birth rates collapse empires collapse with them. And I don't think there is a clean solution to the birth rate being down - if there was then everybody would be doing it. It's a problem we see all around the globe because (my theory) is that advanced society is just structurally not geared towards high birth rates. We're all atomized, just "economical units" in the eyes of the system - there are no third places anymore, personal entertainment is more engrossing than ever, etc. I'm a pessimist on this but I think short of a true religious revival, low birth rates are a permanent fixture of a sufficiently prosperous society (the exception being extremely religious communities).
So if you proceed from these two assumptions - that low birth rates cause collapse, and low birth rates are a permanent fixture of developed society - the choice basically becomes to resign yourself to collapse, or to try and fix the problem in some way or another. Incentive-based fixes like tax cuts for parents, etc, don't seem to work. The only successful solution people have found for this issue seems to be immigration, which simply offsets the low birth rates.
This is also to say nothing of the fact that, for instance, immigrants found successful companies at a much higher rate than native born Americans.
I'm not saying there are no problems with immigration. There are definitely problems with immigration and there always have been. See Gangs of New York, for instance. But when the choice is between immigration and long-term demographic collapse, immigration seems to be the preferable choice.
Also, I'd honestly ask Claude about this. This is just my understanding but I think Claude or whatever would give you a better picture.
No-Admin1684@reddit
Yeah, because those tax cuts are comically dwarfed by the cost of raising a child. For the incentive to work, it needs to have a positive enough impact on a person's quality of life to offset the drawbacks of having children.
DatingThrowaway121@reddit
Completely agree, how do you propose we pay for it though? We're already comically in debt. This is the crux of the issue.
SpringwoodOhio1428@reddit
Literally nobody cares to watch the new snow white or little mermaid. In the future people will still be watching the animated movies. Stop crying because Disney executives are just out of touch and allergic to making good movies.

TeamAquaGrunt@reddit
i don't think stirring up culture wars really works for movies because the outcome is just that no one watches the movie and it never gets talked about afterwards. this is a bit of an unusual case because it's a Nolan film, but I feel like the only thing that's gonna happen is the movie sucks and people retroactively (and accurately) start to assess that his older films also suck.

Imgayhajkthatsgross@reddit
Oscars.
It's literally that simple. The diversity quota.
Nolan has always been a Hollywood outsider and I think he's just finally trying to actually get awards and is playing by their dumbass gay rules.
SpringwoodOhio1428@reddit
Why would you he care about getting any Oscars when he already makes billions of dollars from his movies and has free reign to do whatever he wants?
Tactical_Llama@reddit
Nolan won Best Picture and 6 other Oscars three years ago for a movie entirely starring white people.
haneybird@reddit
Yes, and they implemented diversity quotas since then.

Requirements literally meetable just by hiring minorities or women as part of the crew, so unless your film's a goddamn all-male KKK rally down to the crew, it'll meet it no matter what
Jedi-Guy@reddit
Lol you're hilarious
endlessnamelesskat@reddit
If that’s true then why have these rules at all? If there’s such a huge racial disparity among the people you hire then surely you’re already in violation of the civil rights act, so there’s no need to have a rule about this.
It would be like putting up a sign that says “no murder or theft allowed”. It’s either stupid or there’s a deeper meaning.

The rules are there for Hollywood to do what it does best.

DiogenesTheHound@reddit
Of course it is. That’s been their playbook for at least a decade now. It wasn’t a coincidence that the live action Little Mermaid trailer at the letters N I G slowly float on screen first for “now playing”. ((((Hollywood)))) stirs this stuff up intentionally
Responsible-Onion860@reddit
Best I can tell, studios and directors do this because they know it will draw criticism from the "right people" which will trigger a vehement and irrational defense from the opposite side who will then go see the movie and talk it up for neutral viewers turning a pile of shit into something people go see.
Valuable-Chipmunk784@reddit
The powers that be will gladly waste $100B of their own and others' money to destroy Western culture. The youth grow up in the 'new normal' not knowing anything different, and they will not oppose it because "it's always been like that". We oldheads will complain and the movies will bomb again and again, but the new culture will be written.
MaybeThisTime67@reddit
The goal is it brings attention to the film, that's my simple take.
Or if you wanna go conspiracy schizo mode. The goal is the elites attempt at keeping the lower class divided and fighting against each other, so we don't focus attention on all the child eating paedophiles who've been artificially engineering modern culture for decades through constant media control, educational institutions and psyops.
TheWorldEndsWithCake@reddit
I honestly don’t think so, Nolan has the ability to make what he wants.
I think he just likes it. He collaborated with Travis Scott for Tenet, and obviously Ludwig Göransson carried the score but it did make the movie feel unique. I do buy that he’s interested in modern similarities to ancient art; why should the modern orchestra, which came thousands of years after the story he’s telling, be used instead of rhythmic oration with percussion? He said something about inspiring the feeling of oral tradition with regards to this.
Also, it would be impossible to please everybody. You had the “mycenaean armour whiners” who thought the legendary warriors in a $X00 million mythical epic should look like tuba men. Re: his choice of Helen, women’s roles have always been an afterthought in his movies and I would not be surprised if he downgrades her importance in the story lol.
I like pretty much all of his movies, I’ll check it out. I don’t think he’s the best arthouse kinographer cinemauteur or whatever film snobs want, but he makes great flicks. I think gazing through the “culture war” lens is just distracting and self-incendiary - people are malding about degrading the perception of western history, what a waste of energy. The Odyssey still exists and you can go read it, it is legendarily boring without adulteration or learning more about the relevant history.
ahackercalled4chan@reddit
that casting director needs to be barred from the industry
corzekanaut@reddit
I got nothing against Nolan except the fact that he refuses to fkn branch out in terms of his casting man. He literally keeps casting the same people in his movies and its gotten boring.
GosuDosu@reddit
What? I can only think of Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon as people he’s casted before, am I missing anyone?
galacticdolan@reddit
Michael Caine is in like 8 of his movies. Cillian Murphy's been in a lot too. Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh were in a few, Joseph Gordon Levitt is in Batman and Inception. There's probably a few more.
I don't see it as a bad thing, in fact I like that he has a roster (because its a really good one), but he definitely likes to use the same actors

Arete34@reddit
Memnon isn’t in the odyssey though.
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
Yeah but with most media depicting the Iliad/Odyssey, they usually bring in parts of the other poem just for name recognition and as flashbacks.
Now that we're talking about the Homeric Cycle, I'm now seething about the fact that we don't a full on film about the Aeneid despite it being able to hold it's own against the Iliad and Odyssey. I don't care it's a spin off it's actually pretty fucking good guys.
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
I'm so fucking tired of this shit bro. I'm not white and a big Greek mythology/history fan. It'd be cool to see more diversity in film and media sure, but not this 'let's black/brown/yellow-wash white characters' shit. Literally just tell the stories of black/brown/yellow characters THAT ALREADY EXIST.
Nothing like telling you care about minorities more than saying minority characters don't matter, and that minorities can only appear on screen as a replacement for white people.
Memnon is fucking cool as shit. This is why Total War Troy is my GOAT game because he's a chad Black king leading a giant Egyptian expedition putting the hurt on everyone not named Achilles, just as Homer intended.
johnkubiak@reddit
People in general are just ignorant ASF about the Trojan cycle. If it's not in the Iliad or the Odyssey it might as well not exist to Hollywood. The people directing this move probably think Penthesilea is a mold used to treat bacterial infections.
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
Honestly I fucking hate both side unironically. I actually have a Goddamn qualification in classical history + history and am aiming to get a part time degree (my third) in history as a passion piece.
The left fucking butchers it every time it's touched by shoehorning in a thousand modern changes that make no sense, while the right crash out at the mere existence of non-white people in their media in general unless it conforms to their worldview (see: basically anything Shadiversity or Metatron of former Swordtube fame puts out these days.)
Look at some literally talking about Memnon got some fucking rightoid NPC seething about it being an 'ethno-narcissist fantasy' for me when I'm literally not even black. I just fucking enjoy the fact it was a game that explored a lot of the Homeric Cycle that 90% of media ignores.
I'd point out that the Anglosphere/the right wing also treats Norse/Greek mythology as 'common property' of the West, which very much isn't how Scandinavian or Greek people see it (check out r/ GreekMythology if you want angry Greeks). This is fucking hilarious when you consider how white guys from fucking Britain or Germany cry about historical appropriation (which is valid) but then pretend they are an authority on Greek and Norse mythology on a basis of shared "whiteness" (a nebulous concept) when the actual, living Greeks, whose ancestors told these stories very much see it as the rest of us appropriating their shit.
It's all fucking stupid. Insert Chinese man tiresome meme.
LongPause-ttv@reddit
That game is terrible and the fact you think its good because you can larp your ethno-narcissist fantasy is fucking cringe
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
>Accurate to the source material
>Ethno-narcissist fantasy
What? I'm not even black you fucking extra-chromosome enjoyer. It's literally accurate to the source material. Before you cope and seethe, yes, I have a degree in classics. I also enjoy playing as Agamemnon burning down Turkey and as Achilles fighting women (Penthesilea) and black people (Memnon) as Homer intended so you're basically just melting down over the fact that black people exist.
You probably jack off to videos of Volound malding and seething at the fact that Total War isn't just Medieval III to XVIII.
Baboon out harder fucking cringeloid.

A lot of directors do this, particularly auteurs like Nolan. Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, all of them rely on the same stable of actors in their movies. Also apart from the Dark Knight Trilogy, he's had a different leading man and woman in each of his films.
SentientDust@reddit
Casting a 40yo as Helen was certainly a choice
blkarcher77@reddit
The insane part is that she's not even that young. She's 33 years old, which is far older than Helen of Troy was when she left Sparta.
brokor21@reddit
Odyssey happens after the Greeks conquer Troy/ Ilion. That took around 10 years.
Then again Helen doesn't appear in the Odyssey until shr is back in Sparta years after and Telemachus is a grown man, so probably around 20 years or so after she left with Paris.
So 33 is just fine, 42 is just fine.
Homer left us mold Helen to our imagination, giving her beauty no mortal bounds or limits each listener can imagine her to his hearts delight. Of course she is not African but then again Americans have to ruin every single thing they touch like they did with Cleopatra because they have no culture or history.
HandOverTheScrotum@reddit
How is this instance Americans ruining things?
Dark_Shroud@reddit
Victoria Justice is 33, Latina, has a fan base, is good looking in general, and looks hot as a blonde.
She might not be Diane Kruger, but give her a dye job/wig and blue contacts and she would've been a good choice. A great choice compared to who they did go with.
Satyrsol@reddit
I dunno if you've ever met Greek people, but they're not really blue-eyed. Hell, I don't think I've even met a Turkish person with blue eyes.
Satyrsol@reddit
Why blue contacts? How many Greeks or Turks do you know with blue eyes?
DreamsServedSoft@reddit
there’s got to be 20 year old blonde actresses who would love to play Helene they could have chosen
Dark_Shroud@reddit
Some probably did audition.
But that's not who Nolan was looking for. He's doing something weird with this movie.
nondescriptzombie@reddit
Lupita N'yongo is easily pretty enough to believe as Helen. But she's terribly miscast. If Agamemnon was played by Idris Elba, or Michael B Jordan, or Paapa Essiedu as well as similar casting changes to his cohort I would be completely immersed and not have any problems with it. Just like if everyone adopted Pattinson's shitty Brooklyn accent it wouldn't be immersion shattering.
She doesn't even crack the top 10 terrible choices in this movie. Benny Safdie as Agamemnon? Elliot Page? Travis Scott? Anne Hathaway?
Shit, there are so many bizarre choices Zendaya and Tom Holland don't even register.
cc81@reddit
Helen is around 40 years old during Odyssey.

Because that is the most “controversial” part of it all. History is repeating itself, and it is now being written by the same people.

Troy is a classic.

Given his fetish appeared limited to adult human females, Harvey Weinstein may have been the most innocent man in Hollywood.
igerardcom@reddit
Why do you think they actually let him be prosecuted? Meanwhile people such as Kevin Spacey are still free....

Very weird to circle jerk of over an old pervert.

Unironically true
Arkhamist1@reddit
They had so many beautiful Greeks to cast for the movie, yet they chose someone completely foreign to the Hellenic people
SpringwoodOhio1428@reddit
Yeah I wonder why they decided not to cast a woman that is only known for being on a nickelodeon show.

Im 100% convinced this is a pysop movie purely made for culture war bs and absolutely nothing else. Like it was made to be terrible for everyone equally
Satyrsol@reddit
Eh, until people hate Brad Pitt for not being Greek enough to play Achilles in Troy, I don't put any stock in these casting choice arguments. If it's fine for a blonde-haired blue-eyed guy to play a person from ancient Turkey, then you should be alright with all of these casting choices.
Stop being hypocrites and hate everyone equally, it's not that hard.
Satyrsol@reddit
Look, until they complain about Brad Pitt not being Greek enough to play Achilles, the whole discussion is moot. They're just plain hypocrites. Be better. Hate everyone equally for things they have no control over.

"Too young" is a valid criticism. She was mid-20's when she first fled to Troy with Paris at the start of the Iliad. The Trojan war lasted over 10 years. Homer's Iliad doesn't say she had any kids but other historical sources claim she had 4 sons with Paris.
By the time of the Odyssey Helen would be mid to late 30's, had children, experienced a decade of stress from the gigantic war she started, etc. And then the events of the Odyssey take place over another 10 years where she would be a stressed out prisoner in Sparta.
So Helen of Troy (or Sparta) should be a mother in her mid-30's to mid-40's.
She should still be hot though.
notarealcamera@reddit
She was kidnapped as a tween. Eloped with Paris as a teen. Mid to late twenties by the end of the war.

Wrote a whole manifesto about a made up event someone posted on 4chan for rage engagement.
This took you so much longer than it could've just to Google her name
Dark_Shroud@reddit
Victoria Justice is 33, looks great in general and looks hot as a blonde.
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
Yeah, she is the right age. It's such a weird reason to give to someone literally exactly the right range.
Dark_Shroud@reddit
She's also not white, so she ticks Hollywood's esg bullshit.
Nolan is playing some weird game with this movie.
AdeptCardiologist462@reddit
“She looks too young” because he’s very concerned with realism? It’s a completely bullshit answer.
JohnBGaming@reddit
Yeah fuck having an attractive young woman be the attractive young woman. Let's make her black and 40, that'll serve the story well and attract an audience
TrumpDesWillens@reddit
Diane Kruger had the role and she was pretty hot in that.

Sadly we all miss Harvey for at least making good movies. Now we're all suffering.

I know you guys are retarded but this is crazy. We got a whole echo chamber here mad about imaginary gossip of a movie that doesn't even exist yet.
BenAfflecksBalls@reddit
Definitely young and pretty. That's totally why she lost out and no other reason right?
Lupita isn't young or pretty by that definition when Helen was supposedly the most beautiful woman on earth at the time.
Wagman2013@reddit
Counter argument, Victoria Justice is not a good actress. I'm pretty sure they just told her all that because they didn't want to hurt her feelings. This sounds more like someone's mom's cheering them up when they didn't make the little league team.
"Oh, I'm sorry sweety. You're actually to good for us! Darn it, I wish i could put you in the movie but you're just to pretty. If we put you in the movie all the actors would be jealous of how pretty and cool you are!"
NedStarkX@reddit
Alter all European myths and history movies to be diverse -> can point to these when immigration policy is criticized to say thay Greece was always 60% Syrian/Nigerian
kodial79@reddit
Well, the too young part is a valid criticism as by the events of the Odyssey, Helen should be around 40.
ExcitableSarcasm@reddit
Well yeah, Helen's in her mid twenties by the time the Trojan war starts, and her mid thirties by the time things finish up (when most of the action takes place).
Still an entirely fucking stupid affair though
ThisUsernameis21Char@reddit
ok
TheDramaturge@reddit
I genuinely don't care about the casting. I do find it kind of funny that just NOW they're trying to avoid having the movie looking too modern and (presumably) anachronistic.
