I am an intensely private person and I am strongly considering running for local office on an anti-AI platform.

Our local politicians, like local politicians in many places, despite claiming to be all progressive, seem to be open to AI data centers all over our town. Just as long as they pretend to be nice about quadrupling our electric bills and sucking up all our water. The thing is, I very much like where I live. I do not want these monstrosities across the street and I feel like the people who are making the decisions are just trying to make weak regulations and be like, “Well you know, it’s jobs, what can you do.” I fucking can’t stand it.
I also do not want anything to do with being any kind of public persona. I have zero interest in my face being anywhere, I do not have social media, unless you count this, which I don’t because it has nothing to do with my life or identity in any way. So that would be the downside. I guess the upside would be that it’s a very local election and only a couple of thousand people vote in the primary for this position. But if I’m going to do it, then obviously I have to run an actual campaign which is an extremely unpredictable thing, and if something weird happens, I could lose control of the carefully cultivated life of virtual hermitdom that I presently enjoy.
What do you say, fellow Gen X voters. What would you do??

Find and support a candidate with similar views.
'Intensely private' and 'public figure' are diametrically opposed. You will have a hard time winning office without meeting many people, and you will have to meet many more once in office.

You know what’s odd though, I’m a really good public speaker. So if we have to have a debate or something, that doesn’t bother me, I have considered the whole thing about meeting people and whatnot and I think I can suck it up for a couple of months if it means getting this done. In all likelihood, whoever wins the primary will be running unopposed, so if I can just get out there and meet a few hundred people who would go out and vote for me, I think I could win. And then all I have to do is support anti-AI legislation whenever it comes up.

There's more to politics than public speaking. You will need to get way outside your comfort zone and force yourself to do all those things that technology lets us avoid: making chit chat with strangers, eye contact, asking people for money and their volunteer time, etc.
But you should do that anyway. I suspect you will have no regrets even if you don't win the election, as long as you gave it your best shot.
As an alternative, you might look for offices that nobody else is running for, which I have heard is not unusual. Whether you can advance your agenda with such an office, I have no idea.
Best of luck!

I’d try to embrace change and avoid the appearance of being an old Luddite.

Right, but here’s the thing. I work in tech. I can walk that line intelligently about the specifics of the issues with these AI data centers and not appearing like I just hate all new tech.

Life was better before the internet. Keep repeating that to yourself.

Sure let’s just let China with the AI race. Good idea.

Being private and being a politician are not compatible.

I think you should absolutely do it.
