Yeah…I was holding off reporting on this. As an ER doc I tend to keep my eyes out for things like this. It’s Ebola, but Africa has done well managing this disease thus far. It’s not a big bad unknown to them. These are the things that stood out to me in the declaration”
“As of 16 May 2026, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths”
“two laboratory confirmed cases (including one death) with no apparent link to each other”
“at least four deaths among healthcare workers in a clinical context…raising concerns regarding healthcare-associated transmission, gaps in infection prevention and control measures, and the potential for amplification within health facilities”
“all point towards a potentially much larger outbreak than what is currently being detected and reported, with significant local and regional risk of spread”
“unlike for Ebola-zaire strains, there are currently no approved Bundibugyo virus-specific therapeutics or vaccines. As such, this event is considered extraordinary”
It definitely will be one I’m watching. As some of you may know I was the 11th case of Covid-19 in my state, diagnosed in Feb 2020 through a WHO test ( because the CDC hadn’t created one yet). I caught it from a patient working in the ER who was traveled in from an area of concern. The moment I CT’d his chest, I knew what it was. I always keep an eye on diseases of concern.

How can you tell by the chest CT
howmanysleeps@reddit
Not OP but COVID patients often show “ground glass” pattern on CT
Hesitation-Marx@reddit
Yeah, it was pretty distinctive then.
Goofygrrrl@reddit
It was. Although we were also seeing “vape related lung disease” at the same time. I was lucky my source patient didn’t vape or smoke, which would have made the diagnosis more challenging.
Coug_Darter@reddit
Interesting. I have had Covid a few times and it never affected my breathing. Is there some kind of hidden damage associated with Covid?
Versificator@reddit
The first time I got it (delta I think, pre vax) I struggled to breathe for months after. When I had it I quickly developed a secondary chest infection of some kind and was mailed antibiotics which cleared it up.
ProfDoomDoom@reddit
There are pulmonary, circulatory, immunological, and neurocognitive forms of “hidden” damage associated with COVID-19.
hagne@reddit
Yes.

Ground glass opacities, I hate that phrase in a radiology report

stop all travel. I do not want to bleed out of my eyes.
Mojave0@reddit
May I ask why? Historically, the DRC has always been pretty good at containing their own Ebola outbreaks it’s endemic to the region and is where Ebola originated when the DRC was still called the republic of Zaire they had one a couple months ago and contained it rather quickly it’s also not known to be an airborne virus you need to be in close contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids to contract it
Doesn’t mean it’s not theoretically capable of mutating to do that there is Ebola reston but that only causes disease in monkeys but not in humans
aDuCkTaKeSaWaLk@reddit
I dont trust the data.

Can’t wait for the current US administration to hand wave away an outbreak in this country and call it “just a tummy ache” and insist on folks going to work anyway for the economy.
Traditional-Handle83@reddit
I think they may take an ebola outbreak a bit more seriously than other stuff cause you can physically see people dissolving into primordial guts (not literally... mostly) in front of you in real time rather than just dying in a hospital from coughing, fever and system shut down. Ebola is a very violent disease.
Oldebookworm@reddit
That description reminds me of a book called “Slatewiper”
Cumdump90001@reddit
School shootings are also horrific and gruesome and they don’t give a damn about those either. This administration would never admit to or address an issue like this because they think it would make them look weak if there was a serious outbreak of any kind on their watch. So they’ll cover it up and spread propaganda about it being fake or not as bad as it seems.
Prior-Win-4729@reddit
Don't you bleed out of your eyeballs with ebola?
Hesitation-Marx@reddit
People have been known to “sweat” blood when infected. You leak from… everywhere, basically.
ODaysForDays@reddit
Naw Ebola has brand recognition. It's the go to example of "deadly sickness"
TheLordOfTheTism@reddit
to be fair it doesnt matter either way. if they try to pull the covid card again people will roll there eyes and not listen. covid proved beyond a shadow of a doubt. people are stupid and selfish.

Just in time for midterm elections!

Sooooo almost pulled the trigger on the hazmat suit in '19 ... But here we are time to spend a bit on next level problems, do I just go full radioactive and hazmat this time, it's only 2026 but given all the cards on the table. Shrug
ProfDoomDoom@reddit
I snagged a PAPR on clearance a couple of years ago and have been delighted to have it but could never bring myself to learn how to use it. My time may have come!
Own-Swan2646@reddit
Time to co-play outbreak?
MaxHeadroom1986@reddit
I’m in no way a professional but I feel like 50 rolls of duct tape could make a pretty baller HAZMAT suit
Own-Swan2646@reddit
Needs zip ties that should help keep the fluids out?
MaxHeadroom1986@reddit
Na just have someone paint you in paraffin wax from top to bottom.
Own-Swan2646@reddit
Now you are talking like my ex back when I was in my 20's ... She was into some odd but now useful things ;)
