anonymoose_2048@reddit
I still follow that rule.
thestenz@reddit
The Hippielypics. Nobody wins because they're all losers.
NbMrgEIwcTAZb@reddit
Nah I totally became that guy lmao no regrets tbh
ColdMastadon@reddit
The way I heard it was that you're a loser if you're in the band and you wear your own shirt on stage. I don't understand why you weren't supposed to wear the band's shirt to their own concert, shouldn't you be showing your support for them by buying their merch and wouldn't you want to get it autographed afterwards?
TurtleSandwich0@reddit
Poser - someone pretending to be something that they are not.
Someone pretending to be a fan would wear the band's merch to the concert. So someone who wanted to appear as an actual fan would not wear what the posers were wearing.
In the time period, not looking like a poser was more important than actually supporting the band.
That is my interpretation. Being 'authentic' used to be super important.
thewilldog@reddit
Yes, this throw away line in what's now a fairly obscure movie had a huge impact at the time. If u wanted to prove you weren't a poser, you had to wear the gear from another (preferably lesser known) band's gear in the same genre of the show you're actually attending.
saturnthesixth@reddit
sounds like seeming authentic was the important thing.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Being authentic, I still hold that value dearly…
I still cant go to a concert wearing the band’s shirt tho, and it’s only bc of this one line
bassmansrc@reddit
Such a dumb ‘rule’
I’m a musician. I’ve played to 10k people before. I will tell you this…if I spotted 1 person at a show wearing our merch…they getting something for free.
It’s a delight. It’s a tribute and an honor.
Wear the shirt of the band you are going to see. Let them know you are there for them. They love it.
Let go of this dumb ass thing.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
This movie came out right after I moved to the US. As a teen who knew almost nothing about being American movies like these were my guideposts… I gotta say I’ve never worn their shirts to the gigs bc of this scene… anyway, i always assumed if I went to your concert it was to see you… but I’ll definitely reconsider, especially when f there’s more than one band playing…
NatoTheLastRedditer@reddit
exactly, that's a terrible rule, and I absolutely wore my 99 rage shirt to see them again in 22
sooo, fuck you I won't do what you tell me
amgineeno@reddit
Hell yeah, this is how you know a real fan when you wear your vintage gear!
triggeron@reddit
Thank you for saying this. I couldn't understand this rule so I'm glad it doesn't make sence.
No-Dig-4408@reddit
I do this to let that band know that I have not just given them my ticket money, but a minimum of that plus shirt money TOO.
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
urneverwhereueverwer@reddit
This is a rule I gave my son. If you buy a shirt from the merch tent there then that’s fine but don’t be that guy.
RaptorKnifeFight@reddit
Johnny Fav! You’re money baby and you don’t even know it!
CMarlowe@reddit
Nah. I'm so so past the point of caring if someone thinks I'm uncool for wearing that band's tee to their concert.
ShillinTheVillain@reddit
I'm old enough to wear New Balances to a 311 show. Who gives a shit about the shirt
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen 311… I’m not especially big into their music but damned if I do t end up being free on a night when someone’s going out, or they’re playing a festival and I end up catching them again…
epidemicsaints@reddit
There's a diff version of this guy that is the "I'm so cool I like this other band" shirt guy. At Tori shows it was Tool, and at NIN it was Aphex Twin.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Oddly enough, I’d bet any of those actual musicians would enjoy that concert… but ya, we get it bro, you’re edgy
TangFiend@reddit
Weren't they all banging Tori back in the day?

icybowler3442@reddit
This was literally the alternative given to me by the person telling me not to be the guy who wears the shirt of the band I’m seeing.
Dimebag0352@reddit
I’ve seen him! He wears Exodus shirts to Metallica and Megadeth shows.
OhTheHueManatee@reddit
I hate that philosophy. Let's say I end up meeting one of the band members (it doesn't happen as often as I'd like but it happens). Do I want to be wearing another band's shirt? What would I have them sign? The only time it has ever bothered me if is when I've gone to see Roger Waters and seen people wearing shirts for albums that were made after he left Pink Floyd.
Cutthechitchata-hole@reddit

Th307h3rguy@reddit

Skate_faced@reddit
When I was playing, there was no money and often, like many other bands, wound up wearing my own bands shirts, even at shows we'd play.
Every now and again "Oh, you're here to see them?" and I'd just nod and smile. Hope the next sentence wasn't "they suck".
Fantastic-Regular614@reddit
I was poor, if I got to see a show I would rather buy their album than a shirt.
Derrick_Mur@reddit
That’s why I always wear my Zeppelin or Pink Floyd t-shirts when I go to concerts
spinnnnnnnn@reddit
My brother wore a pink Britney Spears shirt when we saw KoRn in '97...I wore a KoRn shirt. He was definitely cooler.
SlapHappyDude@reddit
I tried to take it to heart, but a big chunk of the audience hits the merch table before the show and then wears their new shirt.
bobrosserman@reddit
This is dumb. You should unapologetically love the band you’re paying to see.
nbcirlclesthewagon@reddit
Except Primus. Primus sucks!
kittenpantzen@reddit
And if I've seen them before, I'm going to be wearing one of those concert shirts.

BigPoppaStrahd@reddit
I have a t-shirt with Captain Picard holding a Guitar and the words “Darmok and Jilad at Tenagra” emblazoned on it. I like to wear that one to concerts. Otherwise I don’t let movie characters tell me how to dress.
HopelesslyHuman@reddit
I feel like this thread has two types of responses. People taking the scene very seriously and taking a side, or people who just wanna quote the movie.
And I weirdly understand both sides of this.
cincinnatikid79@reddit
I think about this every time I go see a band or watch a franchise movie written, produced, and or directed by Gutter.

Potential-Ant-6320@reddit
As someone who follows this rule I wish everyone saying you can wear the shirt should list the last few shows you’ve been too. Something tells me these are the people from The boner pull ads that wear the Malibu Road Band shirt to the Malibu road band show. If you’re going to a big show with over 3k people this rules doesn’t really apply. This is for small venues for CMJ type bands. If you’re seeing a band that sells millions of albums this doesn’t really apply.
Bulky_Goat_9624@reddit

This right here. I like to express my variety of listening interests at shows. That said, don't be a fuckin' dick. People can wear what they want.
Especially if it's a bill that has more than one established act. Maybe you wanna let people know you're there to support your favorite primarily.
Tell ya what though. Saw Castle Rat, Amon Amarth, and Dethklok last week and it was w fucking killer show.
Potential-Ant-6320@reddit
Same. If I see someone wearing the band shirt to see the band I just assume they aren’t particularly concerned with being tragicly hip.

I’m more of a sports person than music person, and it’s encouraged to wear team clothing to a game. The above quote sounds like something that would be said by one of those people who hate bands once they become popular.

It's so weird how this idea took root in some people. Like before the movie came out I'd never heard of this "rule". Because honestly who gives a fuck? But all of a sudden it became some kind of stupid, elitist faux pax to wear the shirt of the band you're seeing. Why? Because fucking Jeremy Piven said so?
So dumb. Wear whatever the fuck you want.

Before the internet this was actually a great way to find new bands. I always treated it as an opportunity to say "Hey if you are at this show, you might also like this other band I really like", and then merch went in a cargo pocket rolled up.

I most definitely wore my old ass Tool shirt I’ve had since the 90s to their show in 2022. I feel like the fact that it’s old and faded and has holes in it made it ok to wear to a recent show. Kinda like “been there, done that, got the t-shirt”.
weezie_lou@reddit

A few years ago I went to see Roger Waters. There was a guy wearing a David Gilmour[1] shirt. I got a chuckle out of that.
[1] For those out of the loop, there is bad blood between Roger Waters and David Gilmour and they want nothing to do with each other. At one point they even turned down a $100 million dollar gig to reunite Pink Floyd because they didn’t want to work together.
LazarusDark@reddit
I don't really care if others wear the tee for the band that's playing. Heck, it's actually awesome if it's the current tour shirt, and you clearly went straight to the merv table and bought it and put it right on. Support the band by buying the merch.
That said, it's not what I do. What I do is wear the band tee from a labelmate of the band playing or a band they are known to tour with or collaborate with. When hanging out with the band after (not uncommon when it's small-medium size metal bands), I always get compliments for wearing the band tee of a band that they are friends with, and it sparks conversation. Wearing thier own band tee would not spark that conversation.
Interesting-Hawk-744@reddit
