The real screwy part with Express is how they have like a 10 step pay progression, and they aren't guaranteed to move to the next step each year. I thought the 4 step system at Freight was bad until I heard about that one.
I still need more karma to post in truckers reddit. I got my CDL, I live in Denver area colorado, are there any truckers out here that could help me find a job to start getting some experience, CDL Class A Automatic, Went to school for this at Fortified Academy and Colorado Trucking College LLC
Check out swift transportation, and if you want the money, dedicated routes is the best way to go, even though it is touch freight, which means you would be unloading the truck
Math here is 57 hours per week, which is 65 hours of pay with overtime. Half your gross is 1,575, which divided by 65 is about 24. This is fine but imo you're better off driving local for more money and more home time.
Most of the time people tell you that you have to start with OTR it's just megacarrier recruiters lying to you.
Go on Indeed right now and look up local jobs hiring near you. Doesn't matter what their requirements are, some places are desperate. Apply to all.
I get 35 per hour + overtime to work at Pepsi. They don't require experience. I work \~40 hours per week. But there are also local no touch freight jobs at supermarkets. Even local B class work is fine. Just do anything to avoid the 60 hour per week grind. Fun fact, truck drivers in the US have a lower life expectancy than people who live in Afghanistan. Sadly that wasn't a joke, it's a real fact. Do what you can to minimize your working hours while maximizing your hourly pay.
Yeah, Pepsi told you that and then they take forever to get back to you. I applied at Pepsi when I had gotten my CDL and 3 to 4 months later. They finally got back to me then they told me even though they’re hiring with no experience they wanted a year experience and I tried for it in three different states and then local good luck getting a local job fresh out of school same thing happened with them first they put out on indeed we only want six months to a year then you go and apply and all we want at least a year I applied to like 60 different companies local all the same thing just different wording so I had to ride my butt out like everybody else with the mega carrier for a year and he’s actually making more than I did in my first year then I went to local and went flatbed that about killed me because over the road it’s 11 Hours Dr. time 14 hour workday when your local it’s a 15 Hour Dr. day and a 17 hour workday I believe on the Workday and I was hauling concrete block and piping for construction for the sewer. My happy butt is going back over the road.
I dont think the 15/17 workday is legit. I'm in my first CDL job fresh out of school hauling bulk cement in pneumatics. Home daily and we dont leave the state and we still follow the 11/14 with minimum 10 hours off no matter how long you worked that day.
Fully agree. Furthermore, prolonged occupational sedentariness—exemplified by a 60-hour weekly threshold of near-total physical inactivity—serves as a critical risk factor for impaired blood circulation, skeletal muscle atrophy, and colorectal pathologies."
Enjoy your biweekly paycheck, life is so short.
Lol, with the current healthcare system in the US I'm not making it past 60. Glad you found your bag, looking at getting out of my high COL area this year and maybe I'll share your view. Had to have two surgeries this year that wiped me so is what it is. Safe travels!
You should be paid weekly in this industry. People who came before us demanded that for a reason. We should not be letting these companies go backwards.
And here I was thinking about getting my CDL to “make more money,” etc… but I’m already making close to or even over $7k a month just driving Class C box trucks (18’–26’) in SF, California. At this point, I honestly don’t know if making the switch to CDL would even be worth it.
You’re making more than I did when I first got out and got my CDL local to be honest with you is very hard to get within your first year because you are a liability to the insurance companies. You need a minimum of one year and I’ll tell you this over the road or dedicated you are a legally only allowed to drive 11 hours with a 14 hour workday. I recently went to flatbed to do local cause I did my time and it then it’s not Federal time. It is local time state time you’re then legally allowed to drive for 15 hours a day and I believe it’s a 17 hour workday although these companies want you to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep good luck with that. It is go go go, and it was the same thing when my father was younger doing his truck driving local he did cement. I never saw him. I know another girl and another guy doing cement and dump. Never see them. They’re constantly gone so if you don’t have a wife or children or just a wife and no children and you can handle that once you get your experience stay away from end dump unless it’s something you really wanna do because they only give you a percentage of each load it may be the same with concrete now but it’s good if you’re young enough and you can work on no sleep if over the road is not for you right now go dedicated, but you won’t get as much Money because you won’t be doing as many miles
General Texas Intrastate HOS Rules (If Short-Haul is Exceeded)
If a local driver exceeds the 150 air-mile radius or works a shift longer than 14 hours, they must adhere to Texas-specific Hours of Service limits: [1, 2] Driving Limit: Maximum of 12 hours of driving time following at least 8 consecutive hours off duty. On-Duty Limit: Cannot drive after being on duty for 15 consecutive hours. Weekly Limit: Cannot exceed 70 hours on duty in any 7-day period.
Yes, I know that but I’m telling you we were driving and working for 15 hours a day. I’m not gonna just blatantly. Tell somebody I was working and driving for 15 hours a day if I wasn’t, my trainer had been doing it for eight years and he said he’s about ready to quit too because he maybe got four hours of sleep at night. I made more money over the road than I did do in flatbed for that company and you can take it, however you want you can believe me or you won’t. I don’t give two shit. I was the one doing the work I know.
A week ago I went with a trainer we had picked up our load we had to take it down from the area. We were at to about 15 minutes from San Antonio. It was a 7 hr drive I believe one way on the way back. He ran out of hours so I had to finish up with hours. I got up at 2:50 AM. Had to be there by 3:30 waiting for him to get there we left at 3:50 AM. We didn’t get back till 10:30 PM that particular day. Any other day we would leave at 4 AM and I wouldn’t get back to the yard until 7:30 PM. You do not stop for a 30 minute break at all. Point blank there is no stopping estimated pay on that was $82,000 a year.
You didn’t answer the question. You said you can drive legally 15 hours a day. You can’t drive anywhere legally 15 hours a day intrastate (maybe Alaska out in the oil fields but I doubt even that). If someone else wants to chime in with more insight. And splitting driving time with a trainer isn’t the same as one personal legally driving 15 hours a day.
I was working for JB Hunt through a concrete company you are contracted to that concrete company. I’m in Texas. They’re training pay what’s $1400 a week before taxes bring home I was bringing home a little over $1200 only because it was training.
All that matter is how you feel about the pay and job. Before my cdl I was making 450 a week and then my first cdl job I started off making 750 per week and felt rich. When they bumped me up to 900 6 months later, I started looking at Lamborghinis to buy.
My point is that’s pretty good if you feel like it is.
I'm local, work about 35-40 and bring home around $3100 every 2 weeks. Tho I've turned down pay of more than double my salary to live and work in Boise and Salt Lake City......screw those 2 states and their bat shit crazy drivers.

Around what i make hourly @fedex express doing Ramp Transport station runs and pickup/delivery.
Weekly pay though, regular OT doing 45-55 hours @28.46 couple years in, another 2 years top out at 35+/hr.

Im with freight, never understood why the pay was so different between the branches

You can look into Dot Foods. I think they have a terminal in Denver

Honestly sounds decent for a new cdl driver, if it's home daily, good benefits and easy work.

I’ve been driving for 4 yrs and I’d take that deal right now. Leave the truck right here where it’s at lol.

I don't know how old you are, but a 401k is just a dream to most people. Just getting bills paid is hard enough under the current economic conditions.

Anybody who's driving a truck should not have any problem with being able to contribute to their 401k.
If you find yourself unable to contribute to a 401k as a truck driver, you have a spending problem.
