What’s your favourite “I was there” GenX moment?

For me it was attending the Bob Marley concert at Gröna Lund, Stockholm in June 1980. It was my first big concert, I was 14 and went with my older cousin who had told our parents that we were going to the amusement park but neglecting to mention that Bob Marley was playing there. Attendance was estimated at 30-35,000 people and it was an absolutely surreal experience I will never forget.

Participating in bringing down the Marcos dictatorship back in 1986. After stolen elections, there were weeks of unrest. Parts of the military tried a coup buy were found out before they could execute.
In desperation, the coup plotters holesd up in Camp Crame in Quezon city and begged for help. Cardinal Sin called on the people to surround the camp and prevent the Marcos loyalist troops from retaking the camp.
Thousands of people came and I was there. We overtook a convoy of Marines on the way. We formed human chains and thank god the military refused the order to open fire in the civilians.
Four days later, the tide had turned and we were free after years of Martial Law and a corrupt dictatorship.
I was there and it felt good fighting for something worthwhile.

Watching the space shuttle Columbia go up the first time in grade school. Big conversations about the dried space foods.
Decades later, in the military more, less enthusiastic conversations about the same space foods.
Several_Hospital_129@reddit
I was working for SkyWest out at DEN when Columbia exploded. I was getting ready to board a flight when the news came across the telex. Back in those days they didn't have TV's in the gate areas, so the passengers were blissfully ignorant. I just stood there, trying not to cry 😢, and then I had to act normally and go back to work. That was a terrible day 😪.
zyglack@reddit
Went to Woodstock 94. When the gates broke went to the McDonald’s and got two bags of burgers. Then the convenience store and six cases of beer. Went back in without having to pay crazy prices for food. Then watched the Green Day mud fight.

Seeing Nirvana: September 11, 1992, Seattle Civic Center. Probably not their peak, but still one of those moments that can't be recreated. But... here's the audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN2Tg7iLrx8
Fun fact: the distortion at the end is Kurt 'surfing' on his guitar, which is balanced atop an overturned speaker. Honestly, I thought the 'destroying the stage' thing was a little lame, but the audience lapped it up. I think they were bored by that point, but it was still a great show musically.
Seeing Depeche Mode at their peak: Violator Tour, October 14, 1990, Frankfurt. Missed out on the Music for the Masses tour, but missed out. This came around and it was one of those things that just felt 'big', and it was. An incredible set. But wait... as things go, someone RECORDED IT!!!!! I both wrote a term paper on Nuclear Winter, and used it as my topic for Original Oratory in speech competitions in HS, largely because of that night.
I worked with progressively younger college students for my whole career (I stayed the same age), and my explanation of how a TV movie caused an entire generation to basically YOLO hard until the Berlin Wall fell because we were going to die in fire or ash grew less and less believable to them.

GnR got banned from Montreal for 30yrs. Metallica came back and did a show for ticket holders when Hetfield recovered.

I saw Michael Jackson in 1988 in Los Angeles with my mom (RIP), and younger brother. They had actually gone the night before and my brother was so upset I wasn't there. We went back the next night, my mom bought tickets from a scalper and we have this amazing memory! ❤️
But for me, my local "I Was There" was being right in the middle of the OP Pro Riot at Huntington Beach, CA. My friends and I were 14 years old, all so excited to be there and suddenly it was INSANE; people running, cops everywhere, things being destroyed. Quite a memory!

My wife and I were driving the coast route up to the Bay Area from Southern California. As we were driving through Santa Barbara I said we should stop by the Neverland Ranch and see MJ. A couple of days later we spent the day in Yosemite National Park. When we were driving out the radio was playing a few MJ songs in a row. I looked at her and said he must have died, this sounds like a tribute to him. Then the DJ came in after like the 4th song and talked about MJ passing away.

On the way there with my GF (who I later married and she sadly passed from cancer in '13) and a friend of mine, House of Pains "Jump Around" came on and we're driving through the Squirrel Hill tunnel hopping in our seats in unison, the whole car was bouncing through the tunnel and we were laughing our asses off. 1994 Lollapalooza during Smashing Pumpkins with 30000 people making out with some girl I just met.
One of my college student jobs was as a stage hand for the local iatse union in a big arena. Of all the concerts I worked and people I met, Elton John was the craziest. The dude has 14 tractor trailers of stage stuff, takes all day to put together, at the last minute with 15000 people in the arena, he flys in the loading bay in a very dark limo and runs out with his body guard straight to the stage. Totally nuts. He’s playing under the piano. I’m standing there with the governor of Massachusetts on the stage side.
Even better- I had been given most of the day off by the stage manager. He sent me and my friend to go find weed for their bus.

Mines not a physical concert I attended, but rather a transformative experience I had watching the wonders of cable TV.
Imagine a group of six 16-year-old Catholic high school girls gathered for a sleepover at the only house in our friend group that had cable TV. Now, if you’re young, you may not remember this, but there was a time in the 1980s where towns were laying down the cables for cable TV. My friend’s fancy neighborhood was the first one in our town to get cable.
There we were, gathered around the TV in our pajamas, September 14th, 1984. The very first MTV Video Music Awards.
Reset in amazement and wonder as Madonna emerged from a giant wedding cake wearing a short, white dress made of lace and tulle veil upon her head. Around her waist, a belt with a buckle that said BOY TOY.
We started that evening as girls, but by the time she had finished rolling around the stage, we were women.
The,importance of that performance in the history of pop music cannot be overstated. She is a Norma Desmond Sunset Boulevard caricature of herself these days, but she will always be my queen.
Jeffbx@reddit
MTV was transformational -
In the early days, they only broadcast at certain hours. I still clearly recall the commercial they ran when they went to a 24-hour a day broadcast -
Some kid is watching MTV, and Death comes knocking at his door. He answers and says, "Oh, OK - can you wait until this is over?" Death agrees, and it fades out to "MTV - now 24-hours a day".

StruggleInner6685@reddit
Oh! DC101 exploded with requests for Running With the Devil the next morning lol
Chad_Hooper@reddit
Yeah, that’s how the music business is supposed to work. Promoting the album by touring sells copies of the album and increases requests for it on the radio, which also spreads awareness and increases sales.
Now it’s a completely different thing, the merchandise sales on the tour may net the band more money than the sales of their music.
StruggleInner6685@reddit
I have been in the trenches. This saddens me so
Chad_Hooper@reddit
I think the root of the musician income problem predates streaming and downloads, though. I think the real root of it is how the record companies write their contracts. Reading how Steve Vai approached the marketing of his first solo album, Flexable, is quite interesting.
But, due to how the contracts are written, older players are still touring, probably as much because they need to make more money as it is their continued love of performing.
BB King never got to retire from touring, AFAIK. Buddy Guy is still touring, last I knew.

Was at Lollapalooza 95 when the lead singer of Jesus Lizard was arrested for exposing himself to the crowd. Courtney Love followed by exposing herself.
Report:
During The Jesus Lizard’s set earlier in the day, lead singer David Yow was arrested for indecent exposure after flashing his penis on stage. When Hole played, Courtney talked a guy in the audience into showing her his penis (he was then escorted out by security). At the end of the night, Courtney and Eric mooned the crowd (Eric had his underwear on). Then Courtney threw her guitar into the pit.

That was the Music for the Masses tour. I was at both legs of it at Compton Terrace in Chandler AZ. The first was on Dec 8, 1987 where the weather was freezing and affected the synthesizers. It wasn’t the best concert I’ve ever been to, that might the Fall at the Paradiso in Amsterdam or the Pogues with Joe Strummer at the Warfield, but the one I’ll never forget was Earth Day 1990 at Chrissy Field in San Francisco. We mostly went to see Mary’s Danish. It started to rain as Devo was trying to go onstage, they’d start to play for a minute, then get pulled off, the rain let up they try again, get pulled off, this happened a couple times, before they decided to pull the plug on them. just before they walked off Mark Motherbaugh leaned over the mic and said "we’ll never save the planet, if we can’t even put on a concert in the rain".

This didn't happen until the very tail end of the '90s.
As a kid (and so many of us can say the same, I'm sure), I adored and idolized Julie Andrews. I was born singing & performing, pretty much, performed my entire life, went to college and did a music degree, and then somehow - by an entire fluke, actually - got tapped to sing in a group backing up Julie Andrews.
She was the reason I stayed with singing, despite thinking I'd never meet her. That wasn't the point, and yet I did.
Like, how the fuck did my life get there? I didn't ask or plan for any of that to happen. It wasn't a goal, but holy hell, there I was.
To me, life was complete at 27, I got to sing background for her, and then got to sing WITH her and got to meet and chat with her, it was 2 days of just non-stop star struck and lemme tell ya, I don't care about celebs.
People say that you should never meet your idol. I did, she was incredibly kind, generous, and patient with all of us there. She was exactly who I imagined her to be.
I won't forget that, ever.
These days, I'm a crippled up arthritic schlub and can still be happy and feel like I missed nothing in life because of that moment, and I am very well aware of how utterly rare that is.

Basic in 1990. I joined the reserves to pay for my soppier politics degree. Drill sergeant knew this and had me explain why the soviets were the threat we were training for.
Told him he was incorrect and the next threat was from the Middle East because the Soviet Union was on the edge of collapse. Received the opportunity to reconsider while I did a few exercises, confirmed I was not cha gong my position. He then told the company I was correct. The day I got to AIT was the day Desert Shield kicked off.

Keith Richard’s birthday during the Tattoo You tour, 10th grade and my sister won back stage passes for spending the day blowing up balloons with the lip logo. We waited to get autographs, 4 am and the party all came out to take a photo on the stage. Jerry took me under arm and pulled me onto the stage for the photo. It’s the jacket photo of the live album and I’m right there with the band and my beautiful sister.
Also hilarious, as we were getting all of the autographs, my sister handed a sharpie to Keith to sign on a deflated balloon. He tried but the top was still on the sharpie. My hot sister said you have to take the top off, to which Kieth answered “I’d like to take your top off”.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and finished college in 88 and started medical school. I remember hoping fervently that if WWIII broke out and if somehow the planet wasn’t a smoldering cinder, I hoped that I’d be far enough along in medical school to avoid being drafted until I was already a doctor because that was my dream since 7th grade. So for me it was watching in stunned but nonetheless jubilant disbelief when the Berlin Wall fell, followed by the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe, then ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union. We feared them as the evil empire then they were suddenly…gone.

Years later me and my 3 year old son watched the final Space Shuttle Columbia launch while standing in our backyard. When the band first came out, you could tell it wasn’t Shane then the singer opened saying something about “yer man is ill and I’m just filling in” - It was fucking Joe Strummer!!! The set was a little strange the first few songs but folks were having a good time - a few die hard Pogues fans shouting “We want Shane”! I swear I thought we were watching history. He was singing " I Would Do Anything for Love" and had been struggling through the concert. But at one of those pivotal moments in the song (IYKYK), he just fell over. The band kept playing and his female lead kept singing. He missed a cue and a guitarist looked over and stopped. Nice! I was at Ozzfest in 1997. Manson played that show and Ozzy did a full set followed by a full Sabbath set. It was incredible. I stayed out of the pit for the whole day but when Paranoid started the entire field of Giants Stadium became a mosh pit so I couldn't avoid it then.

Not really at an event in person, or nice, but I was in my dorm room in 1994 and turned on MTV and they were announcing Kurt Cobain's suicide and my friend rolled his eyes and said "What a surprise."

I was driving through Guymon and got pulled over for out of state plates. Cop harassed us for patches of pot leaves and hippie type car stickers.

In Tripping Daisy’s “My Umbrella” video, there’s a shot looking out into the crowd and there’s a hole in the mosh pit - that was me being trampled!!! Venue was Trees in Deep Ellum, Dallas.

Oh damn. That's a cool story. I bet that blew your mind at 14.
I, uh, saw George Bush the First once. Rounded a street corner on foot and there he was, yakkin away. I kept walking.

I was living in Saigon as a first grader when, on April 8, 1975, a fighter jet flew super low over our house and bombed the palace four blocks away. He had two more bombs destined for the American Embassy where my dad worked. Fortunately he missed the palace so he circled around again and use the two remaining bombs. He did hit the palace but the damage wasn’t great. I’m 57 now and am still taken back to that day in April anytime I hear a fighter jet (and I live near our air national guard station, so it’s a few times weekly). So yeah, I had a front row seat to the fall of Saigon as a scrawny little white American kid.

Phish at Big Cypress, 12/31/99. 85,000+ people ringing in the new year with a 7+ hour midnight to sunrise set on a Seminole Indian Reservation in the Everglades. I’ve seen some phenomenal shows since then but that was certainly a once in a lifetime experience that may never be topped.

Same.
I also saw Green Day just after Kerplunk! came out. It was at a venue that held about 500 people and there were definitely more than that. It was a "these guys are going to be fucking huge" moment and everybody there knew it.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, every late 80s/early 90s show was so intense. My wife and I will never forget that feeling of dark heat emanating from the stage.

For concerts I saw both Oingo Boingo and the Plimsouls at the original Golden Bear in Huntington Beach back in the 80s before they hit it big on different nights. I also saw Jewel pre-Pieces of You (her first album) sing “Who Will Save Your Soul” in north county San Diego when she was pulled up on stage by the opening act for Dramarama. I also saw a free concert at my college by Concrete Blonde when they had just released their first album

Saw widespread panic album release in Athens ga 1998. At the time it was the largest release party ever. 100,000 folks downtown Athens (not a big city by any stretch). At the time the whole Athens Clarke county was maybe 120,000 people.
Lots of hippy types. I was more a rage or 311 type guy but I really had fun there!
