Im struggling a bit to pick an ebike and was hoping I could get pointed in the right direction.
I want something I will use to get to work in the city but part of my ride is an area I do not feel safe on the road. When my job was closer I ended up opting for a mountain bike after too many spills on a road bike from potholes and mean drivers. I liked this because the unsafe roads I could hop onto the sidewalk and hop off if I saw any pedestrians coming to give them right of way. My bike was so agile there was never a problem and I never got near any pedestrians on sidewalks while on a bike. But the e-bikes I test drove were so bulky there was no way I’d ever take them on a sidewalk like that.
Is there anything that won’t break on sidewalks that at times feel like a mountain trails and is light enough I can alway give way to pedestrians way before they reach me?(Although unlikely on the areas I’d need to avoid the road on). And would an M drive be best?
Ideally my budget would max out around $3500.

Honestly, mid-drives are overkill for city curbs. You just need a hardtail e-MTB to avoid the 80lb fat-tire bulk. I’d look at the Velotric Summit 1—it’s agile, has front suspension for potholes, weighs a manageable 62 lbs, and sits way under your budget at \~$1,800. You can use the list below to filter and search for additional features you might want as well

Mid drives have a lot more torque & are twice as efficient as a hub motor so you go further on a charge

Go to a bike shop.

There are a ton of ebikes that fit that. I would go to a local EBike shop & test drive a ton of them. The thing that pisses my off is they all lie about the range, Mid motor is better than a hub motor for performance & distance. U want 48v or higher & 30ah or larger battery. My 48v ebike turned out to be 36v & the 40 miles of range turned out to be 6 miles. I bought my own 48v 30ah battery & upgraded it myself. Now I get 60 miles + on a single charge

Specialized Haul ST

I'm picking up a Tern Vectron P10 for roughly this purpose. Folding, weighs in at 42 pounds. Can't recommend it yet, it's pending delivery, and there was nothing in stock to test ride. I did ride the heavier non-folding Quick Haul P9 Sport and liked it, so fingers crossed. The Vectron is just over your desired cost. I may have it by Monday, will try to update.

Edited to correct weight.

maybe try some folding fat-tire e bike? Fat tire: stable, folding: relatively not that bulky.
