That was for something that was the hot Christmas gift of 1984, to be gifted to kids who'll keep it and enjoy it. This is a limited edition watch that 99.9% of people trying to get them are doing so just to sell on as a profit.

Basically, every hobby anything collectable etc.. it's all resellers selling to resellers to sell to resellers to finally sell to a collector. People can't just enjoy anything anymore or find a good deal at a thrift store.

It’s not just scalping, it’s get rich quick schemes. Everyone claims to know someone who made a million in a year just by buying some collectible product and reselling it a bit later. MtG cards, LuBuBu’s, the prediction markets are playing into this too. Everyone is desperate, and getting more desperate by the day as they lose money on these schemes and yet the rich selling them profit once again. It’s all transfer of wealth, and way too many people don’t understand that. The world is a casino and the house always wins.
