Restaurant was playing P.M. Dawn when I was having lunch on Wednesday...

I've been occasionally listening to them for the last few days. Just looked them up and saw the founder passed away 10 years ago, but their cousin is still performing under the P.M. Dawn name (Gallagher 3?). I had pretty much forgotten about them, but I've enjoyed hearing their music again.

I heard them in Kroger recently. Yes, I sang along in produce and then near the bread until I started to get dirty looks.

*high five* I'm at the age where I will sing/dance lightly if my jam comes on. I have heard others do the same. I will duet with somebody by the soup, there will be no shame.

We've earned this.

Kroger plays all my jams.

I used to love Set Adrift on Memory Bliss... until I realized that the tune I thought was so great was just a straight rip from "True" by Spandau Ballet. Now I just listen to that song.
ngdsinc@reddit
I knew Be...he sampled things that he loved. He had no problem making up his own stuff and there's lots of great unreleased music I have with no sampling. If you hear something he sampled it was because it made him happy not because he was trying to cut a corner and squeeze out the next cookie cutter hit.
touslesmatins@reddit
It's called sampling? The two songs are both great and distinct

Dude is like “I don’t listen to ‘Ice Ice Baby’ because ‘Under Pressure’ exists”
tigerblue1984@reddit
Right? They even had the guys from Spandau Ballet in the music video lol. Definitely a tribute, not a rip off.
BaronGalactic@reddit
Oh, no, I wasn't trying to suggest that at all. But it was always the melody in the background that I loved about the song the most, and then I come to find that it's actually a song of it's own, and one I happen to prefer. I still think "Set Adrift" is a good song in its own right.

Their cousin stole the name. The legal stuff recently got sorted out and he is no longer allowed to do anything under that name. Greg (moron cousin) spent years running around hiding from process service for the lawsuits by the family. He rerecorded the classics to try and cash in on the popularity, butchered the hell out of them in the process, removed originals from streaming platforms so his version got the views, then also made up some new crap that was stupid and trashy while trying to pawn it off at P.M. Dawn music. I've met him, he's full of himself, and in the words of Michael Bolton, he's a no talent ass clown.

This is a band that I’d completely forgotten existed.

Always been into metal and alt stuff, and I remember hearing this when I was a kid and not liking it.
Fast forward, I love it now. I recognize Prince Be's not giving a fuck attitude, and they're pretty great lyrically.
ngdsinc@reddit
Fun fact. Attrell (Be) was a friend of mine for many years. I had many late night chats with crazy stories about how you weren't accepted unless you chose a side, but he didn't want to choose a side, he just wanted people to be friends and he liked a lot of different types of music. Dude wasn't looking to be labeled into a group and pick fights like most rappers and such. That don't give a fuck attitude partially came from not being accepted into any specific group and just carving out his own realm. He was a very kind soul with many deep layers just trying to figure out life like the rest of us, he just happened to also have a gift and used it.

"I'd Die Without You" is really their best song
imatumahimatumah@reddit
It is such a damn good song. It’s beautiful, it’s romantic, it’s nostalgic.
InMyHagPhase@reddit
I used to listen to this song and cry SO HARD. Don't even know why. It just moved me so much.
Here I am about to cry again lmao

For a long time the only versions on streaming were the ones re-recorded by the cousin. They were.. insufficient.

I heard this song the other day while at the airport at midnight, near the end of a long travel day, waiting for my luggage. Almost like a weird dream

That's the way it goes, I guess.

Set adrift on memory bliss of you
squee_bastard@reddit
Whenever I hear this song I’m instantly flooded with nostalgia
Klinky1984@reddit
It using the Spandau Ballet hook makes it nostalgic even for the early 90s. Man the music video looks so 90s. 1991 had the 90s firmly distancing itself from the 80s. I love the soundscape the song creates.

"Downtown Venus" is a mood-enhancing drug 😄 (^(I had a vintage pair of those those exact same narrow, check-me-back glasses in high school. What I wouldn't give to have them back.))
