What are differences between ireland and britain that the average person will notice upon visiting both?

I haven't been to ireland since i was a kid but I think if you placed me at any random spot on either island I wouldn't be able to tell which was which without looking at a road sign or hearing someone talk
Dragonfruit-Agitated@reddit
Street signs have both Gaelic and English spelling
audigex@reddit
That might not be super obvious if you visit Wales and Ireland, rather than England and Ireland
Hot-Asparagus-2645@reddit
English people know the difference between Welsh and Gaelic 🤣
audigex@reddit
Perhaps, but the context here was someone visiting Ireland and the UK
... which rather implies they aren't English
bolivlake@reddit
Pizza Express is called Milano
Poundland is called Dealz
Hot-Asparagus-2645@reddit
Primark is called Pennys

Barry’s vs Yorkshire
Pyriel@reddit
The yellow "overtake" line at the side of the road.
That, apart from Dublin, there is so much space everywhere.
The word "Fuck" is used a a noun, pronoun, adjective and regularly as a replacement for a space between words in many places.
The honesty in the language. The British will dance around things wherever they can, but the Irish will call a spade a fucking spade at the first opportunity.
audigex@reddit
The overtake line and the calling a spade a spade, sure
But the space thing really depends where you are in the UK - Cumbria, Scotland, Yorkshire, Wales can be pretty similarly empty
And I'd say the use of "fuck" is pretty comparable
Pyriel@reddit
I'm from South Wales. My wife's family are from Roscommon/Galway. My best mate lived in Lucan.
Nah. I stand by my comments.
audigex@reddit
South Wales is the only full part of it
If you don't think British people use "fuck" much like Irish people do, you've not been to the right parts of the UK
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Which Britain?
Grea Britain or one of the lesser isles?
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
nobody is referring to the hebrides or the isle of wight as britain
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
But they are isles of Britain.
Can you not just say that you meant UK and not Britain so we can all go to sleep happy
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
well the uk also includes a part of ireland
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
The island of Ireland is geographically part of the British Isles...
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
and i said britain not the british isles
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Jesus.
Ok I give up.

Where in Britain? It’s pretty diverse
notmenotyoutoo@reddit
That both of them have capital letters at the start but they are different letters.
audigex@reddit
Some of the rest of the letters are different too, if you look closely
pearsareforbidden@reddit
Petrol stations in Ireland have these hot food and deli counters that are so good.
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Wait… GB don’t have delis? 💀
audigex@reddit
Not generally at a petrol station
Devious_Pudding@reddit
Chicken fillet rolls are the best.

Ireland foliage is a darker shade of green.
Odd-Quail01@reddit
Less intensive agriculture/fewer woods but more hedgerows. More birdsong.
JimDixon@reddit
Forty shades of green, if you believe Johnny Cash.
SnoopyLupus@reddit
Km.
Devious_Pudding@reddit
The road signs also use a different font. That threw me first time going over there.
Odd-Quail01@reddit
Roads in better condition in Ireland.
Puzzleheaded-Lynx204@reddit
If we're saying km we can probably say Euros too

Open at 10:30am(Sunday 12am), close at 10:00pm. Supermarkets must abide by the same hours.
Pain in the hoop.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Similar in Scotland, alcohol is only allowed from 10am-10pm, so that's not a massive difference.
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Think the hours are even less here in NI
60sstuff@reddit
The biggest one that stuck out to me when i visited Dublin this year was the pedestrian crossings. In the UK they make a sort of soft beep and often have a big yellow box. In Dublin (can’t say and for the rest of Ireland as i haven’t been) they make a sort of fluttering sound that is much more similar to the crossings in Germany and the rest of Europe etc.
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
I will continue to maintain that the UK has the best designed pedestrian crossings in the world. There's heaps and heaps of consideration put into them for everyone of every ability. From the textile paving to the green man to the little turning knob underneath them
EUskeptik@reddit
What struck me on a recent visit to Ireland was the excellent behaviour of children and young people in stark contrast to their foul-mouthed feral equivalents in mainland Britain.
I flew into Shannon and visited Limerick, Cork and Cobh.

ActionBirbie@reddit
Lol, you have not spent a single second in Ireland or anywhere (assuming this is a genuine opinion, might just be a troll).
tmr89@reddit
I guess you didn’t visit Dublin
EUskeptik@reddit
No, it’s quite a few years since I visited Dublin.
I speak as I find, so cannot comment on Dublin.

whosUtred@reddit
Sorry but that’s just bullshit, both countries have their fair share of feral idiots, but equally a far higher proportion of decent people!
EUskeptik@reddit
And you would be one of the former. Bye! 👋
StockKick4984@reddit
The hate for the English 🤣
Front_Society1353@reddit
Nah you can find that in Scotland , Wales and NI as well.
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
I knew a bloke who was a welsh nationalist. spoke the language, wanted a hard border, and wanted hereford and shropshire in wales too. He did ancestry.com hoping to find out he was related to valley miners etc, turned out his whole family was from birmingham.
Front_Society1353@reddit
Thats gotta be the worst place to find out your from as a Welsh Nationalist
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
I really do wonder what he wanted hereford and shropshire in wales for anyway, those were the borders centuries ago, nowadays they're just full of enlgish people, who he can't stand
Front_Society1353@reddit
More farmland or something? Dont see what makes them valuable to Wales
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
something about them being colonised welsh lands that were owed back. Amazing how some people can't cope with the fact that countries grow and shrink arbitrarily over time. Imagine if scotland wanted cumbria back
Front_Society1353@reddit
Or if England wanted any of the countries its ruled back
StockKick4984@reddit
There’s a joke there but I’m not saying it as I’ve had a beer so I’m sure it’s only funny in my head 😅
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
go on lad
StockKick4984@reddit
If his family history goes back to Birmingham there’s still no guarantee he’s part English.
I’ll see myself out 😅
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Why would you want a hard border lmfao?
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
i asked him once and he said to "legitimise" wales as a country, given that every other country had passport checks at the border. He used spain and france as an example when he said that. clearly not the brightest bulb
rybnickifull@reddit
Poland, France, Czech Republic, Latvia...
Front_Society1353@reddit
Eh?
rybnickifull@reddit
People who express dislike for English people. As an English born person I've heard it in all those and more, thanks entirely to stags.
Front_Society1353@reddit
Pretty much everyone hates English people including other English people. People in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland particularly dislike us because they view the government in London as oppressing them
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
They dislike the government and some vague idea of the people. Maybe 50 years ago you'd get grief but nobody in this day and age is going to have a go at you purely on the basis of being english
StockKick4984@reddit
Which kinda proves my point 😅
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
the english hate the english too
Front_Society1353@reddit
People hate people from the next town over
StockKick4984@reddit
Only the southerners and anyone not from Yorkshire 😅
Feeling_Pen_8579@reddit
Never saw it personally, at all in fact.
StockKick4984@reddit
I did but maybe that was because my partner at the time dad couldn’t wait to tell people in the pub I used to be in the British Army.
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
well there's your problem
StockKick4984@reddit
Ahh wasn’t so much of a problem just every so often I’d have to do a short but energetic dance 😅
tmr89@reddit
It mustn’t be nice for them to have hate in their hearts

The accent
Manifestival1@reddit
Well yeah depending on which part of Ireland you're in you want to hope you hear they're accent before they hear yours.
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
even now? tons of blokes go on lads weekends in belfast and kneecap sells out stadiums in england
Manifestival1@reddit
I don't know. I lived in Belfast 2007 and a friend of mine a couple of decades older seemed to think we had reason to be wary then. So it's not something I'm certain of myself and that was obviously almost a decade ago.
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
almost two decades ago mate
Manifestival1@reddit
Indeed! It's late here :)
